Saw here farewell tour. What presence! Just dont see that much nowadays. Got to play Cornelius in Los Angeles. Had the same director/choreographer as the national tour with Ethel Merman, but Carol really has "it".
Too much fun! I played Stanley and then Barnaby with Carol in her "farewell" tour of Dolly in the U.S. after she finished this London production. Such a wonderful person to know - I learned more than I could begin to express. Of course, it ended up not being her farewell tour. This brings back great memories.
Thanks a million for posting. You just gave me back some wonderful memories from yesterday when I was young. I saw this production at Drury Lane about a dozen times back then in 1979 - not because I liked Ms Channing, but because I was in love with the beautiful bar man in theatre's upper circle bar. Miss you kiddo. Hope you are OK and happy :-)
Babs, step back in line again!! For me (and this is just my opinion) Channing has enormous warmth and humanity in the role of Dolly Levi, whilst Streisand (who is a hugely better singer technically) does not. I can (and do) admire Streisand but Channing brings a fond and affectionate smile to my face. Interestingly, Dora Bryan, who was a truly wonderful Dolly, did the same thing as Channing, bringing tremendous humour and warmth to the part with character singing rather than technical skill
@popazz1: You would have to see a whole performance of Channing in "Hello, Dolly!" to get the voice. That gravely voice becomes one with the character of Dolly Gallagher Levi.
And,step forward Miss Barbra Streisand! Ok,Channing wasn't the worst singer on the planet, but she was nowhere near being a good singer! I guess she entertained in the traditional sense & she certainly was the right age to play Dolly Levi,Streisand was way too young for the role in the film. But,christ, could Channing crucify a song!
God bless you for uploading this.
Others will play the role of Dolly, and they will do it well. But there will *never* be another Carol Channing.

A true Broadway legend-she should've been given the chance to do the film version. At least this clip has been saved for posterity.
