Gandalf did enter the tower of orthanc, broke saruman's staff and banished him from the white council. I don't know if that happened in the film though.

@JagoReedJones It technically didn't, he visited sarumon and they fought, blah blah blah, gandalf lost, blah blah blah gandalf runs away.

@LandTravelz Yeah he goes back though in The Two Towers, and does what I said up there. Again don't know if that happens in the film.
