Note that you can also see the sun's reflection off the ocean north of the band of clouds northwest of South America.

I was there! You can see why this eclipse could only be seen from Pacific islands (I was on the little atoll of Hao) apart from the extreme tip of South America. And why there was some cloud (but we did see it).
