@cstac21 it's not a smoke. It's just air that's pushed out of the way of the aircraft so fast, respectively can't get out of the way fast enough at this speed, appearing to a human eye as a cloud or smoke

These aircraft are not actually breaking the sound barrier. what you see, known a angel hair, is the result of the pressure wave and the barometric pressure causing water vapor to change into liquid water...it can happen as an aircraft breaks the sound barrier, but on a hot humid day it can happen a much lower speeds..on a dry cold day you may not see it at all. (science teacher and pilot)

15 years ago when the Happy Hooligans used to pilot F-16s they'd routinely fly in a designated airspace that happened to be over my small town in North Dakota. That isnt the breaking of the sound barrier.Thats called adiabatic cooling... The aircraft is making an instantaneous cloud. Also jets are not allowed to break the sound barrier near civilians. So they wouldnt at any airshow.

@benry200 when an object moves (slower than sound) it actually pushes sound waves in front of it- this is why you hear a car coming down the street... This sounds low pitched because its longer waves from being pushed... Behind you hear a higher pitched sound- shorter waved from being pulled...

hey uhh...vapor cones are not the sound barrier. It's a buildup of air molecules that can't get out of the way fast enough. They actually occur at all speeds, you just can't see them until you are traveling at near supersonic speed. One can only see a craft going supersonic when there are perfect conditions, which has only happened once with a space craft. And I'm a senior in high school on a regular diploma...

The sound barrier cannot be "seen." What you see is water vapor, being condensed from the atmosphere by a drop in temperature which is caused by a rapid reduction in pressure in the immediate area. It has no relationship with the sound barrier, and you have never seen a plane go supersonic, because if you had, you'd know the difference between the huge sonic boom, and this little vapor cloud.

I just wanted to say just because you see a vapor cone on a plane does NOT mean that it is breaking the sound barrier. There are many instance (like at airshows) where a plane will be going quite fast but will NOT break the sound barrier. Yes when a plane breaks the sound barrier it may or may not have a vapor cone but it all depends on the air pressure and humidity etc. just thought I might clarify.
