I am currently learning scot joplins songs (im 13, and so far have learned maple leaf rag and the first page of the fig leaf) and so far its all fullspeed, as fast as scot joplin plays it himself (ive heard recordings of him)
Goodness... no matter how many people I hear play Scott Joplin's music, I've never heard one that plays it better than you do. And I've heard a lot of people play Scott Joplin's music before....
It sounds like Mr. Joplin had all these great rhythms running through his head, and he quickly put them all together in one song before he could forget them! I love it!
I freaking love Scott Joplin and all his pieces. Trying to play maple lead rag, bethena and this song right now. You play them all perfectly I always refer back to your videos when practicing
Great job! Your non-scored flourishes stay withing the spirit and sound of this rag, and are well executed. This is definately a version of this piece that I could imagine pianists in the 1910's playing. While I think you get the tempo far more correct than most people of your talent who play WAY too fast, I think you could be slightly quicker in the beginning. And while I respect your choice to speed up the end, I think the last section is a bit too fast. Personal preference. Thumbs up!
Dude, I love your performances! I'm listening to a few right now to help keep my homework from driving me insane.
I am a piano student, and I've been trying a lot of Scott Joplin lately. I've been watching a lot of your videos to get an idea of how these rags should sound. Thank you very much for sharing your musicality with us all.
wow. love the dynamics, so full of expression! I remember when i learnt that watered down version of this piece, i woulded even be able to compare with you! your a very talented pianist keep doing wat u do!
@Navizurc123 he's good i'll give him that but i can play all these songs from memory too and im sure theres a lot more people who can do the same so in all honesty it would be pretty unfair if he was famous at this level of skill
Scott Joplin's music doesn't just make us understand it, or create happy feelings. His music lets us know that music is always there for you. I miss Scott Joplin<3<3<3 =(.
Absolutely marvelous! This is one of my favourite rags and I have loved this music since hearing it at the Great America amusement park in California 20 years ago and finally matching it to Joplin while in college. I could listen to this all day.
@thefirebird21 omg i agree with wat u said... i also luv scott joplin and agree about wat u said about scott! lol i tought my self half od the entertainer and i hope to become better at it
hahaha these people are jealous that you can play it that fast. I play paragon rag fast and slo depending on what my audience wants. if you can play it fast you can play it slo.. just dont play it like a robot though
@Telamon8 Since I hve no idea what pachese is, id say its possible to brush yr teeth and nail a poster to a wall at the same time, leaving out the pachese bit
It's not that fast. I think it's a great tempo, especially since most of the other videos on YouTube play it a lot faster. Fast ragtime sounds very messy but Chocotiger's interpretation sounds near-perfect to me :)
@nexplosion1 Scott Joplin has his style of play, so do others. You are young thus do what people tell you to, when you get older you'll probably end up playing music to the tempo you love. Besides, its not THAT fast, i've heard faster versions, and they aren't as good, slow versions drag.
@BrokenBrilliance well if the piece gives me a tempo I'll usually play it at that speed. But I have a book of Scott Joplin rags and at the top of all of them it says "composer's note - do NOT play fast, it is never right to play ragtime fast. So Ha! :P
@nexplosion1 thats what I'm trying to say, the creator may have thought that it shouldn't be played fast, but its up to you how you play it, why would I play a song slowly like its supposed to when I enjoy playing it quickly.. I wouldn't.
@BrokenBrilliance point taken. Once I actually learn the whole piece off by heart I'd say I'll take it around this speed. Now I feel like a complete muppet. :-P
How you play is your own interpretation and choice to either play it fast or slow. BrokenBrilliance understands that it's all about preference in speed, and not just whatever a book tells you.
ChocoTiger, your renditions of Joplin are far beter than others that are on youtube - including those of some professional virtuosoes. Do you tour? If you come to Pittsburgh, I'm pauy good money to listen to you live!

Hi, do you have any tips for me, if I have to jump from a low note to high chord (fe the third line), how can I learn to do that (i'm very slow at those parts). Pleas help me...
I can help you. With the left hand parts that jump around(all rag time does this), you just need to get your brain familiar with the chord you're coming back to. Then, once you can hit that chord without even thinking about finger position, you can start practice moving slower from the note to that chord at a steady pace. Once you do this enough you will be doing it as naturally as walking. If you have any more questions I'm here to help.
Okay i'm a bit of a beginner just going by what i read from sheet music. Quick question: did you add those grace notes, ornaments and staccatos youself? My music for this piece doesn't have them!
Yeah, this one really isn't too hard. The only part that does bug me is the ascent after the main chorus (first page, the chord-octave-chord-octave-half steps, then the ascent, then the right hand melody part)
