congrats... now google is on ur side..... explore the world of art and bring it to us, and we will support u for ur fine works. good luck for ur future and ur bigger projects.
Thanks for all the nexus one video comments. Susan and I are working on a new project. Stay tuned for info about that. Also thanks for those who understand the need to work with companies like Google that want to financially support what I'm doing.
I'm a commercial filmmaker (although Francis Ford Coppola doesn't quite agree of the use of the word "filmmaker" in that context) so my views may be biased.
But think about this question: If an artist makes a piece of art that gets sold so that she makes a living, does that make her art less significant?
I don't think so at all, but make your own judgements.
The next question is regarding commissioned art, is a work of art less appealing if it was commissoned?
I just saw this and ended up following the whole thing on Four Eyed Monsters. Thats it, past 5 hours gone-forgot to eat clean and everything else. Great video Arin, even if for a phone.
aahah That was really good! I thought it was brilliant how the phone was at the end and I thought it was a life learning lesson. Well! I have asked those questions many times to myself recently and I just don't know what to do! SO I do Nothing!! AHAH :D
I like it. I think this is great. It doesn't matter if it is a commercial. Why do people care about that so much? It's actually the most innovative commercial I've seen in a long time...with a personal twist.
Congrats on the sponsorship! I still enjoyed the clip even if it was ultimately a commercial. It's brilliant of Google to nab you... those guys know what their doing.
This is actually so upsetting! why on earth have these amazing film makers amazing people using their art for advertising????!!!!! i really enjoyed this until the end till i realised yet again this is another money making scheme. I LOVED FOUR EYED MONSTERS. im hating this.
everyone has to make a living. if you make me a little sad with this video, it's not because i think you have no character, but because your video is a reminder of how society forces artists to sell their souls from time to time, more like rent their souls, to pay the bills. then again, if you show the phone thing to be a total failure next episode, i would be really happy. i mean, i hope you get organized, but if one phone doesn't turn you're life around, which it probably won't, then be honest
i think this is one of the best comments ive read on youtube.
allthough i dont entirely agree with it. but you made a point, the phone wont turn his life around but he has to make some money to do what he wants to do.
i don't know if the nexus is really an iphone killer. But i do know that the video previews and the way they are advertising the phone suck, compared to the way in which apple displayed and previewed it's iphone. If the nexus is better, they need to step up their presentations, drastically!
Of course you take the offer from Google. You need the money to live, you build more awareness of your work, you feel appreciated just by being asked. Anyone who thinks Arin is a sell out is wrong. All artists need 'angels' or 'benefactors' to exist.
definitely way cooler than any ad I've ever seen - Your comment about muddy water is way interesting. I can filter my water though. I liked this a lot.
Great job Arin, I love the style you have developed. I said it was a sell out before, but fuck it, you have the right to do whatever you want with your skillz, and that includes makin money.
I could see that. I wondered about that when editing. Then thought that it was cool because this actually isn't an advertisement. This is not going to play on TV, there was no ad agency. It was really just me telling my life story while simultaneously fulfilling the request that google had for me to make a video for a substantial sum of money. Saying yes to the money is pretty much mandatory for me at this point to insure my computer, hard drive, and food expenses get covered.
Everyone's got to pay to eat. Blame the world we live in where selling = living, People, especially in urban places, all have no choice in the matter.
While I kind of agree, I also think he has the right to make money. Would you turn down Google's money or make a 3 minute video and get paid? We all have to do what we have to do.
I agree with you pretty much. It's unnatural to mix things that could be pure with money making muddy water.
However, I'm learning more and more about money all the time and have come to find it's simply an exchange of energy numerically represented. Just numbers. Google could have picked anyone to give 3K to and I'm grateful they chose me.
o.k. maybe i was a bit harsh. i know that you have to live of something and my point wasn't that much implyed to you as to google. i like your movies very much so i was very suprised at the fact that you made a deal with a company that is what it is, today.
don't wory, i'm still a huge fan :)
You are my hero, or antihero, whatever you prefer more.
Oh yeah, I actually film out the window all the time, I hope I'm not putting 200 peoples lives in danger, but it's not a wireless device, it's just a camera.
Not a typical take on a commercial for the Google Nexus One but I don't expect anything less from you.. and that's very much a complement.
I recall seeing you in a CTFXC video when the partners were called to Google HQ for a meeting. I guess we know why now. Looking forward to the phone, it's just not great that they're following the same commercialisation as iphone.
congrats... now google is on ur side..... explore the world of art and bring it to us, and we will support u for ur fine works. good luck for ur future and ur bigger projects.

It's good to see your back, even if your no longer a four eyed monster.
Then again, with the Nexus One's 5MP camera maybe you can at least be an organised 3 eyed monster?
