yet again those unelected spongers trying to re-write history. What a bloody sunday lie in the 70's/ and a stupid monarch then and a stupid monarch now. off with their head plz.
@TenderTrap86 He was no more brutal than any other military leader of his age. He massacred his English royalist enemies the Scots and Irish, but civil wars are always tragic and brutal.
@ADZ01982 I believe it's to the contrary. While his tactics may have not been anymore brutal, Cromwell was more brutal than most in that he believed he was doing God's will.
I also believe that most Irish and British historians would hardly call military conflicts between the Irish and the English a "civil war". Technically, these events transpired during the English Civil War, however, Ireland was always dealt with more like a colony than part of the UK, proper, even up into the 1900's.
The death toll at Drogheda was largely English Royalist and Irish Confederate military garrisoned there, about 3,000 men in all. There were civilian deaths due to priests, nuns and laymen taking shelter at Drogheda, which was something of a fortification.
This was not at all unusual under the siege warfare methods of that time. It makes Cromwell no more monstrous than any other military figure of the era who had ever mounted a siege of opposing forces garrisoned in a fortification.
@JuanMacready True - I can recommend Tom Reilly's "Cromwell An Honourable Enemy". A Drogheda businessman he has examined the story with a practical eye & been hammered by professional historians for his pains. One of the most notorious tales is Cromwell's men used Irish children as shields on the spiral staircases into the fortifications. Anyone believing this should try it with hands free then try it again with a 20lb+ child held above them with one hand & a 3' long 10lb sword in the other.
glory to THOMPSON PERKINS AND CHURCH shot by hitler/cromwell for refusing to slaughter in Ireland May 17 1649 and glory to William Walwyn for suffering prison for his written opposition
its a lovely religion-protestism. Founded by a fat catholic who could nt get it up ,and moved onto butchery , arrogance and a fondness for money. Ironically it"s the love of money that is killing it-no great loss when it fizzles away.
@toonmag50 The trouble was he got it up too often and in the wrong places. He got syphilis which he passed on to his children hence no male heir. BTW Protestantism was started in Germany by a Catholic monk called Martin Luther.
@freebeerfordworkers I should have been British isle specific- Henry 8 creating a Protestant England ,and yes ,you "re correct Martin Luther founded the principles of Protestism in Saxony, Germany not being a nation until 1871.
At least Luther had a zeal and established a set of principals, which is so much more than Henry and the English Church did.
Luther had a core anti-semitism though, this and his works place him as a premiership Protestant, leaving Henry as Blue Square Southern league
@toonmag50 I am not into theology but there is a view that Henry's religion was Henry VIII. One historian said she had tried to be objective apart from being a good horseman there was nothing positive she could say about him. I would agree Germany was not a political entity until 1871 but Germans would say it has existed as cultural and social entity for 1000+ years. Nation states are in any case a 18th & 20th century invention as most existing state borders were drawn then.
@freebeerfordworkers Henry 8 is indeed probably the most negative British monarch, simply by manipulating a radical "foreign" religion , to gain his desired objective, and as a result directly promote this peculiar nationalisitic religion onto England"s people. The ultimate and sadly hillarious irony (and arrogance of both him and his "religion") ,is the English monarchy being head of the new church,-thus fuelling both institutes into having such incredible and dangerous ego"s.
@JuanMacready this is a statement rather than a comment -and perhaps you "re correct. His ego knew no bounds, as well as his girth. His ego being responsible for the outragious blasphemous idea that he and subsequent monarchs were dieties.-
This self-righteous arrogance and perceived superiority has poisioned the English Church and the British Isles since
By coincidence the highest ranking survivor of the Droheda massacre was a cornet (2nd lieutenant) called Richard Talbot who eventualy became Earl of Tyrconnel and the Lord Deputy of Ireland (kings representative in the realm).
Speaking as an evangelical protestant christian, I regard Cromwells war crime as being in open defiance of the Law of God. Cromwell's religion was thus worthless for when the chips were down he resorted to manifest evil.
He is of his father the devil, and he is an example as to why, though I must necessarily believe Protestant doctrine, I regard the entire Reformation as being a spiritual counterfeit.
From Martin Luther, througfh Calvin to the 30 years war (1618-48) all it was was violence!

@blunt1984 Thing is where does it all end?. Should I still hate people in Norway for the Viking pillages?, what about William the Conquerer?, Napoleon?. @evi1ROBOT Dude don't think of it as banging on about him, think of it as part of their history, culture and heritage. "When forces on one side of the river surrendered, it is alleged that Cromwell, still meeting resistance on the other side, ordered the annihilation of the entire population."
I am not trying to make any excuses for Cromwell because view him as a prequel to Hitler. This is just what I found in a historical article about the incident.
@blunt1984 Then quote your sources mate. At the end of the day you claimed that 4000 were killed, which is 25% higher than any figure in "historical articles". What's more, by the laws of 17th century warfare, if a town refused quarter then the lives of all within its walls were forfeit (have a look at the Sack of Magdeburg in 1631 if you want evidence of a real massacre).
2). You claim you were rounding up the pop. in 1841 to 12 million.
3). You claim the pop. at the end of the famine was 3.5 million and remained unchanged until recently. You supply no reference.
4). Most tellingly you don't know where I got the 9 million from!
You're a monument to the dangers of knowing a little bit of information. Educate yourself and stop acting like a loyalist by spreading misinformation.
Wtf are you talking about you muppet? Telling the truth = selling out to "my brit masters?". lol.
You're at it again: The potato was introduced in the 1500s which was not recent as you claim. Jesus christ, are you making this up as you go along?
I disagree with the use of the word holocaust as the famine does not fit the definition. I blame Cromwells Settlement of Ireland act - that fits the definition of a holocaust dipstick!
"I need a british sanctioned education to satisfy your self hatred!"
I'm not certain what you are trying to say here PollenB, but I can assure you that you would be considered a dunce in any country.
You have no interest in facts and can only name drop Malthus. These facts that you resent so much don't paint the British is a good light, and they also have the added bonus of giving the impression that you are intelligent which is something you clearly crave.
Sorry for blocking ya jratt. But this back and forth is getting far too annoying, especially as you keep making excuses for the Brits.
The Brits kept exporting most of Ireland's potatoes, corn(maize), wheat, and livestock for profit, to intentionally starve the Irish to death or emigration.
Why do you think their are murals in the North that refer to it as "An Gorta Mór-The Great Hunger-Ireland's Holocaust By Starvation" instead of the "Potato Famine"?
By the way, jratt2 is an Irish museum curator with advanced History degrees....hardly a British sympathizer. I'm sure he was just trying to keep the facts straight and free of hyperbole...and as I recall, there were multiple crop failures/blights.
Good vid, btw. You might want to do one on Cromwell's men and the Rock of Cashel, too. Just as horrific as Drogheda.
Seems to be a miscommunication here. There was 200 years between Cromwell and the 1840s famine. I think jratt's point was...yes, Cromwell's Settlement of Ireland Act was genocide....but the the Famine was just that...a famine, that was exascerbated by the Brits as the Irish were "encouraged" to leave, not just killed on the spot (a holocaust)...the famine was the real reason Ireland's population dropped by half.
Well someone brought up the famine in a comment, but it has nothing to do with this video.
But I do consider it a genocide. Ireland wasn't the only nation to have the potato blight, it effected America and Europe. But those countries weren't British colonies, which the British were determined to make a profit off of, regardless of how many humans died in the process.
Understood, blunt1984. I often get those off-topic comments too on my vids. They're distracting. The irony is that the "Master Computer" of YT doesn't differentiate comments and tends to push more viewers towards vids getting comments....so it's a two-edged sword...speaking of Cromwell. LOL
Yeah, the brilliance of youtube. (Can you sense my sarcasm?)
But I guess if it ends up in me getting more vid views it's ok (that's why I let the arguments go for a while until it gets ridiculous.)
Sometimes it also helps expose the racism and bigotry of the British Loyalists when I let them show their true faces in comments before I eventually block them.-LoL
As long as it helps out our side then it's all good to me!
Okay maybe I over-reacted too but The Famine, per se, is a lie! It was a Holocaust! Every book read in Ireland is published in Britain, even our own fucking history!
Everyone knows about the famine pollenb. But your assertion that the census of 1840 (there was no census that year) indicated that the population was 12 million is bogus. Stop making shit up and do some research. It doesn't mean you have to change your arguement only that you have to back it up with facts.
In short: "learn your history before you comment fool".
"Unlike the two earlier censuses, the returns in 1841 were filled out by the householders themselves, rather than government enumerators. The information supplied was: * name; * age; * occupation; * relationship to the head of the household; * date of marriage; * literacy; * absent family members; * family members who died since 1831; "
"I was rounding it off so's that spastics like you could understand!"
Calling me names does not change the fact that you are a dunce PollenB.
Intelligent and educated people (clearly excludes you) generally accept that the population of Ireland was approx 9 million. Why did you round it up to 12 million? I assume thats what you were doing.
Secondly you erronously claim that the population of Ireland remained unchanged at 3.5 million thereafter. More nonsense.
Where did I get my 9 million? I read a history book PollenB. I suggest you do the same
Yyou demonstrate that you are a dunce. If you actually understood the word holocaust you you see that it would be more appropriate description for cromwells regime in Ireland than the failure of the potato in the famine, which was many things, but only became a "genocide" when some americans decided it was.
However feel free grandstand to your fellow dunces. It amuses me.
Alot of those graduates running around jratt, lol!I suppose he doesnt belive the Jewish Holocaust of Hitler's Germany happened either.Or that England massacred thousands of French civilians in the many wars between them either.England has a lot of blood on her hands. And I suppose the U.S. too but at least I dont deny that, pollenb.
And dont call The Famine a lie, pollenb you asshole! Thanks to the "Empire" and its genocidal laws regarding the natives of its many nations it conquered and subjugated many native populations including Ireland and even Scotland starved and died horribly. My family and many others from Ireland were forced to leave and go to the United States and Canada becuase of The Famine. There is plenty of evidence and stories to repute your "great lie" view of An Gorta Mor (the great hunger).
Cromwell invaded Scotland (an indipendent nation) in 1650, killing 4,000 Scottish soldiers, taking another 10,000 prisoner and then capturing the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. Many of the Scottish prisoners of war taken in the campaigns died of disease, and others were sent to penal colonies in Barbados. So thats 14.000 Scottish men died at his hands! They then sacked the town of Dundee, killing up to 2,000 of its population. He was a bastard!
One crop failed you fucking moron, how would that cause a Famine? The Famine was a mass starvation by the British. Learn your history before you comment fool!
He claimed to be executing God's judgement on the Irish.Sounds like the things Osama bin Laden does.He claimed to be a Puritan Christian but he was really a bloodthirsty barbarian and a racist bigot who used God as an excuse for power.May he be rotting in Hell with his real master.
The 1840 census records show the population of Ireland was around 12,000,000. The 1850 census records put that figure at 3,500,000 - where it stayed for 150 years. Birth rate and death rate were equal. I wonder who worked that out! Google Thomas Malthus!
The great lie called "the famine" happened between the two censuses.
There was no Census in 1840, Think you mean 1841 and the population was around 8,200,000. It feel to 6,900,000 in 1851 and to 5,800,000 in 1861. In 20 years Ireland was reduced by 2,400,000 in which the vast majority of them left Ireland from the United States.
Holocaust, Don't make me laugh, If we wanted to genocide your population, You think we'd wait around for God to send a famine?
The Famine = God's Wrath, An thats a Fact! You all pro-catholics know it deep down, heretic scum

Where are all the shipping records for the boats that went to America from Ireland?
Where did they get all the food to feed 1000's of boatloads of people at sea for several weeks if there was a famine on? Or did they just starve on top of the diseases and pestilence?
Famine? One crop failed and millions died?? Only the most braindead could believe that pile of crap! Most of the food was shipped to Britain to feed the starving masses in workhouses Manchester and Liverpool. Idiot.

Educate yourself. You'll thank me for it.

"Holocaust Denier!" lol
jratt2 3 years ago
Sorry for blocking ya jratt. But this back and forth is getting far too annoying, especially as you keep making excuses for the Brits.
The Brits kept exporting most of Ireland's potatoes, corn(maize), wheat, and livestock for profit, to intentionally starve the Irish to death or emigration.
It was ethnic cleansing, pure and simple.
blunt1984 3 years ago 2
Why do you think their are murals in the North that refer to it as "An Gorta Mór-The Great Hunger-Ireland's Holocaust By Starvation" instead of the "Potato Famine"?
You think they just made it up?
I think not!
blunt1984 3 years ago
By the way, jratt2 is an Irish museum curator with advanced History degrees....hardly a British sympathizer. I'm sure he was just trying to keep the facts straight and free of hyperbole...and as I recall, there were multiple crop failures/blights.
Good vid, btw. You might want to do one on Cromwell's men and the Rock of Cashel, too. Just as horrific as Drogheda.
bigbeninjax 3 years ago
Seems to be a miscommunication here. There was 200 years between Cromwell and the 1840s famine. I think jratt's point was...yes, Cromwell's Settlement of Ireland Act was genocide....but the the Famine was just that...a famine, that was exascerbated by the Brits as the Irish were "encouraged" to leave, not just killed on the spot (a holocaust)...the famine was the real reason Ireland's population dropped by half.
bigbeninjax 3 years ago
Well someone brought up the famine in a comment, but it has nothing to do with this video.
But I do consider it a genocide. Ireland wasn't the only nation to have the potato blight, it effected America and Europe. But those countries weren't British colonies, which the British were determined to make a profit off of, regardless of how many humans died in the process.
blunt1984 3 years ago

As long as it helps out our side then it's all good to me!
blunt1984 3 years ago
Okay maybe I overreacted. But still it did happen.
irishoforiel 3 years ago
Okay maybe I over-reacted too but The Famine, per se, is a lie! It was a Holocaust! Every book read in Ireland is published in Britain, even our own fucking history!
PollenB 3 years ago
Everyone knows about the famine pollenb. But your assertion that the census of 1840 (there was no census that year) indicated that the population was 12 million is bogus. Stop making shit up and do some research. It doesn't mean you have to change your arguement only that you have to back it up with facts.
In short: "learn your history before you comment fool".
jratt2 3 years ago
It was a holocaust not a famine!! Eradication of a population. The Famine was in Britain!
Go to irishholocaustDOTorg, you fucking muppet!
Like the "Troubles" wasn't a War!
Dont suppose you ever heard of Thomas Malthus being a fucking bogman!
PollenB 3 years ago
You're waffling. I'm a historian who also studied a bit of sociology and you are a guy who is acting like he just heard of Malthus.
Citation for 12million population please.
jratt2 3 years ago
There was a Census in 1831, 1841, 1851
Irish Times
"Unlike the two earlier censuses, the returns in 1841 were filled out by the householders themselves, rather than government enumerators. The information supplied was: * name; * age; * occupation; * relationship to the head of the household; * date of marriage; * literacy; * absent family members; * family members who died since 1831; "
Gobshite!

Well, ten out of ten for getting the year right you muppet.

I was rounding it off so's that spastics like you could understand!
PollenB 3 years ago
"I was rounding it off so's that spastics like you could understand!"
Calling me names does not change the fact that you are a dunce PollenB.
Intelligent and educated people (clearly excludes you) generally accept that the population of Ireland was approx 9 million. Why did you round it up to 12 million? I assume thats what you were doing.
Secondly you erronously claim that the population of Ireland remained unchanged at 3.5 million thereafter. More nonsense.
jratt2 3 years ago
Just returning the favour.
Long night in the barracks was it? Did you pull that 9 million fugure out of your arse?
Holocaust not Famine is my point - however you want ot juggle the figures!
PollenB 3 years ago
Again, no answers from you.
It amuses me.
jratt2 3 years ago
Alot of those graduates running around jratt, lol!I suppose he doesnt belive the Jewish Holocaust of Hitler's Germany happened either.Or that England massacred thousands of French civilians in the many wars between them either.England has a lot of blood on her hands. And I suppose the U.S. too but at least I dont deny that, pollenb.
irishoforiel 3 years ago
And dont call The Famine a lie, pollenb you asshole! Thanks to the "Empire" and its genocidal laws regarding the natives of its many nations it conquered and subjugated many native populations including Ireland and even Scotland starved and died horribly. My family and many others from Ireland were forced to leave and go to the United States and Canada becuase of The Famine. There is plenty of evidence and stories to repute your "great lie" view of An Gorta Mor (the great hunger).
irishoforiel 3 years ago
Cromwell invaded Scotland (an indipendent nation) in 1650, killing 4,000 Scottish soldiers, taking another 10,000 prisoner and then capturing the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. Many of the Scottish prisoners of war taken in the campaigns died of disease, and others were sent to penal colonies in Barbados. So thats 14.000 Scottish men died at his hands! They then sacked the town of Dundee, killing up to 2,000 of its population. He was a bastard!
seonidh 3 years ago 3
I think PollenB means that to call it a "famine" is a lie.
Since it was really a intentional genocide by starvation, perpetrated by the British Empire, not a natural "famine".
But I could be wrong so you might want to check that out with PollenB (since I'm not a mind reader).
blunt1984 3 years ago
You'd be right matey!
PollenB 3 years ago
One crop failed you fucking moron, how would that cause a Famine? The Famine was a mass starvation by the British. Learn your history before you comment fool!

irishoforiel 3 years ago 2
The 1840 census records show the population of Ireland was around 12,000,000. The 1850 census records put that figure at 3,500,000 - where it stayed for 150 years. Birth rate and death rate were equal. I wonder who worked that out! Google Thomas Malthus!
The great lie called "the famine" happened between the two censuses.
irishholocaust * or g
PollenB 3 years ago 2

PollenB 3 years ago
PollenB is another graduate of one of those "make up your own history" schools. lol
jratt2 3 years ago
Famine? One crop failed and millions died?? Only the most braindead could believe that pile of crap! Most of the food was shipped to Britain to feed the starving masses in workhouses Manchester and Liverpool. Idiot.
