  • I apologize, but I don't learn very visually like this. I would much rather read the sheet music. Do you have any idea where I can get it? Thanks so very much for posting this. I enjoyed it very much.

  • @hunterlpdc94 There is a PDF notation file of the piano part from the above video available on my website.

  • @Lot2learn Ok!! Thanks a lot. Once again, great playing. I hope to be as good with improvising as you are one day. BTW, your use of the pentatonics at 2:20 is genius.

  • tasty.

  • Nice blend of tertian and quartal sounds! You have a broad vocabulary and it's always a pleasure to hear your stuff. When you say "pull" on the beat, you mean lay way back (create a delay) against the time, right?

  • @Modes9 Correct you are Eric. ;-)

  • Superb taste. Great tips. Thanks so much!

  • Really nice playing, a favorite that I also like to perform. What's your source since your line doesn't match the 58 Harold Land version which I would think would be closest to Carl Perkins' conception since he plays on it & it's the first recording?

I assume you transcribe it as it's in the original key, like the 61 Montgomery Brothers take. The only printed chart and sources I find on the internet incorrectly put the tune in G minor instead of Eb minor along with many incorrect changes.

  • Just fantastic Roger! Just found this! Have you checked out the Phineas Newborn version of this? Such a great tune and you play it brilliantly!

  • Thanks Wayne. Yeah, the Phineas Newborn version of ANYTHING is incredible. ;-)

  • hey l2l im one of ur fans keep it on iwant u plz to upload more of ur gigs videos 10x :)

  • This video is in my favorites, great work Roger *****

  • hey lot2learn, when you imply "pulling on the beat" you just mean pulling on the and right as in 1 AND 2 AND, rite???

  • this video is AWESOME! I always tell young cats how to improvise. It's telling a story and starting out too fast kills the anticipation. This is really neat stuff...love it.

  • Thanks CB.

  • Once again an amazing performance. It's funny because the first thing I noticed in the video was that watch that I hadn't noticed before. Keep it up! do you play with any bands or anything?

  • Thanks. Yeah, you can click on the "Buy Tickets" link on my main YT page to see a schedule.

  • Thanks Jason.

Annotation was done with my video editing program - it is a little easier for me to do it all at the same time.

  • Thanks.

I use a Videocam on tripod above piano for video. Audio for the FP-4 Piano is being recorded direct into my computer through an M-Audio 1010LT sound card.

  • This is great work !!! Could you make a midi available for this piece.

  • Absolutely wonderful, I'd love to have an MP3 of this recording! It's absolutely a great example of why I've always been a fan of people who understand push-pull and playing just a touch behind the beat. This seriously swings. I just caught myself tapping my foot and bobbing my head without thinking about it.

  • Thanks Dan.

I enjoy your playing and that great Rhodes of yours as well.

  • Thanks. The fat Rhodes tone makes me sound a lot better than I really am! I actually posted a new video this morning if you're interested.

  • Thanks Dave. Yeah, Eb Minor - gotta love it. I've heard Daahoud but never played it. I'll have to re-visit it.

  • Thank you Professor V for elaborating on that astute observation. I do concur. ;-)

  • great explanation for having a good sense of time and feel, and nice watch :) keep up the great playing and teaching!

  • Thanks David.

  • Woah, nice.

  • thanks l2l for another lessons about the art of improvisation ;)... great tune!

  • great post!

  • great,relly i have a lot to learn,thanks for helping

  • When you said "use space" I kept hitting the space bar. Nothing happened. I think there is a programming error in your video.

  • lol.

  • Ultra-laid back and swings like crazy! This is totally your element.

  • Sweet, so they have a real bass now and not just drums in BiaB. I'll have to check it out! I was waiting for this to come so I could really use it again and make backing tracks for all the stuff Aebersold doesn't cover.

I wish Aebersold had stuff from Chick Corea like Spain and that Rumbata piece which name I've forgotten.

At any rate, great post! Nice lazy feel.

  • CD quality gd as usual, a lot to learn from you~

  • amazing. I totally prefer sloppy over sterile runs ;)
