  • Ciel nemico, avverse stelle

    Mi scorgete e voi brillate,

    Vinto in guerra, re constante

    Sposo offeso, ardito amante

    Sfortunato e pur fedel

    Nel girar astri guidate

    Traditore il fato amaro

e la sorte a me infedel.

  • hi dear! congratulations! amazing video!

  • I am not fond of countertenors Stephen, I think he sounds better than the average countertenor but not better than a female voice.

  • It all depends upon the male or female role and the particular music. I would never dream of a male successfully singing the lead female role in Capriccio; and, at the same time, having a female sing the male lead in Giulio Cesare is silly now that we have some top quality countertenors such as Andreas Scholl, who has done the role.

  • I'm agree with you. I think countertenors help us to respect the author's whish.

When Haendel wrote G.C. He was thinking in the voice of a man.

We can make accurate performances now with this voices, we can imagine how the baroque music sounds like.

  • Countertenors are not castratis, Handel wrote many male roles for female singers (sesto, tolomeo, polinesso, medoro, radamisto, evanco etc) even roles created for castratis like Rinaldo were trusted to female singers when Handel was still alive, there were not countertenors in his operas.

  • of couse there's not castratis now, and of course there was not countertenors when Haendel wrote that.

What I said is that he was thinking in a man, not in a woman, to perform the role of G.C, and is better if a man (countertenor) plays the role now.

Haendel was the author, we have to respect the author's decision.

That is what I was trying to say.

  • But the author judged female singers suitable for male roles aswell.

  • Yes, he did it and it is okay. Handel was the author and he can do it, but I think is not healthy if the Director or the production takes the decision of putting a woman to perform the role of a man.
