you could from a logical point of view say this is the beginning of afterlife. not just a temporary sensation, these supposed waves at the quantum foam level that creates consciousness could exist in every piece of matter. how does the quantum mechanics theory of replicating brain cells explain the visual and auditory perceptions (new perceptions that takes place during the operation, not just previous memories)? how does it explain hearing a conversation or seeing a new instrument? brain cells alone can't see or hear. they need the assistance of sensory organs to get the inputs.

Seems to me that quantum mechanics property of superimposition implies that given the molecules can exist in two places at the same time, then it must exist in the brain prior to its final cessation thus allowing you to observe outside of your body. Big thing will be what happens for example if a person's brain totally shuts down, does the doppelganger copy of the consciousness also cease to exist..wonder if we will ever know...

@TheSpankymonkey The word theory comes from the greek word theoria. Which means "to look at". It is based upon observation, not facts. Darwin came up with the theory of evolution from observing the variations in the birds beak at the galapagos island. Nonetheless, theories can be disprove. As seen with Louis Pasteur who disproved the theory of spontaneous generation through his experiment in the 1800s. I like how everything you said was so easy to refute =D not to mention inacurate...

Unfortunately, Dr. Hameroff's "theory" is really just unsubstantiated speculation. Also, his description of quantum-mechanical processes lacks rigor (Penrose would have done better with the quantum explainations...); there certainly is no concrete evidence of quantum computing in microtubules, nor the aspect of entanglement to "glue" bits of quantum information constituting consciousness after death - if that's even plausible at all.

I loved your comment about consciousness, and how it doesn't occur in the brain. I've read up on hundreds of near-death and pre-death experiences, and in many of them, nurses and doctors have talked about how they briefly saw a sphere of white light leaving the chest region of their patients at the exact moment of death. Eventually, I have faith that more will become far more aware of their higher selves than ever before, and realize just what you wrote is true.

In the revealed scriptures, "Vedanta," death is discussed at great length. In essence, we are not these bodies. There is the gross body..muscles, tissue, blood, bones, etc. Then there is a "subtle" body..which is made of mind, false ego, and intelligence.  Then there's you..covered by these other two "bodies." The brain is simply a receptacle for the demands of the physical body. You are not the brain. You are not this body. You are pure consciousness, spirit soul.
