Though this was something of a propaganda film for the gas company, I think they did have some benevolent intentions in social planning and it seemed to have worked. -tarotworldtour
Really interesting. The Bullring (St. Andrew's Garden's) is the only one of them left isn't it? I talked to a fella who grew up there, he said the drying room was bizarre, the way the metal racks slid out of the wall.
1 doctoma.you are alwaya slaging liverpool off if you dont like it thir fuck of somewere else u dick.ask any of the old famillys who lived in myrtle gardens was they the days of thir life 99per cent would tell you yes..you had to live thir to understand it..

I'm in my mid 30's and I can only imagine the pride that was in the city at this time. It breaks my heart to see the people of modern day Liverpool dragging it's own reputation into the gutter. Long live Liverpool!
I remember getting the no3 or the 26 bus outside Gerard Gardens back to the top of Hopwood st with my Mam after a day out in TJ hughes. We lived in Hopwood Gardens. We loved those days.
I lived in Prince Albert Gardens, in Park lane, in the 50s and 60s. I have to say the houses were well built (not like today), and the community spirit was great.
Does anyone know of or where I may be able to get a clip or photographs of the tenaments that used to be off the Dock Rd around Luton Street and Dublin Street in Bootle? Been looking for ages without any luck - hope someone out there can help!! Cheers
Mmmm lets see now one type of slum for another ? seems like another fking harry enfield moment no? Anyone who lived there would remember the issues. there again better than new towns!
Lovely to hear those clipped tones reserved for the beeb. I feel I should be wearing a starched white coat, smoke a pipe, and grease my hair. Thanks for supplying this.
The footage is featured in my film Gardens of Stone, but was originaly included in a film made by the Gas Board. It was used to promote the benefits of gas in new homes (hence the scripted comments by Mrs Greaves), and highlighted Liverpool City Council's major investment in communal housing in the 1930's.
Hi, just bought a 1 bedder in Minster Court (Myrtle gdns) It says in vid though that they were 2,3 beds. Was mine changed to a 1 bed in the Barret conversion and do you know how? Any info would be most appreciated!
I think the video came from a The film documentary Gardens of Stone it contains some 1938 footage of 'Homes for the workers' featuring Myrtle Gardens, Lancelot Keay and talking to a Myrtle Gardens resident.
Interesting to hear the Liverpool accent of the lady on the film, as in comarrison to the city accent today. Obviously, the lady is speaking in her best 'posh voice', but good to hear anyway.

Nice digs, but German bombing destroyed quite a bit of them.

I remeber going there to visit one of my mothers friends when i was a child. Small and tidy. By the way, that girl is a wealthy person now.

@TheGardens Hi, the video includes my grandmother (Mrs Greaves). I would be grateful to know where the full original video may be found.

Hi Frank
I think the video came from a The film documentary Gardens of Stone it contains some 1938 footage of 'Homes for the workers' featuring Myrtle Gardens, Lancelot Keay and talking to a Myrtle Gardens resident.
I think it is originally from the BBC archive
