I don't think fame had anything to do with their smoking. They were probably doing it before. They used to hang out with older people when they were younger, and they tried a few things... out of which cigarette smoking is probably one of the least relevant... ;)

But like Bill has said a few times, they lived in a small village with not much to do except these sort of stupid things which for many people are a "healthy" part of growing up... but most of it is behind them now...
