Missmezzoyo23: not sure if you know, but when singing French opera, we are required to roll the 'r's tonproject better. If you don't roll them and keep them in the back, the sound goes back instead forward and out. Ask any good teacher or opera diction coach :)
its good but last time i checked it was in french and they dont roll their r's....don't know the full story of the opera but too much stress on the r's for my taste...
I find she does not quite get into the character enough and she slides to much for my taste. Other than that she is really good. Try watching Elina Garanča's version from the 2010 met live in HD.
I find she does not quite get into the charector enough and she slides to much for my taste. Other than that she is really good. Try watching Elina Garanča's version from the 2010 met live in HD.
I loved the way she sang this aria so much that i just bought this production on Amazon last night. like 21 bucks with delivery. can't wait to watch it.
I saw her in this role one or two year earlier at the Met and she was HORRIBLE! Just heard it recently on Sirius radio and it was just as bad as I remembered. Can this be the same singer? I can't believe it. I think it was something to do with that production and her interpretation of the role. I will no longer speak of her as Carmen with disdain! Though I still don't know if I'm totally thrilled with her interpretation.
I agree that her singing is wonderful here. I just can't figure out why it wasn't a year earlier at the Met (where she was booed and badly reviewed). I still have mixed feelings about her characterization. The BEST (possibly ever) is still de Los Angeles. And it's great that there are now live clips of her on youtube- even if they're from a little later in her career.
Ooh! I love how subtle the acting here is. Finally a Carmen who isn't running all over the stage trying to act sexy. This Carmen knows what she's got and exactly how to use it. I love how she utilizes her voice here too. She's a nice Carmen.
Very, very nice. I like her voice. It has real personality from her crystal clear high notes to the true mezzo bottom. Lots of character it was almost like having the spirits of Grace Bumbry & Maria Callas in one body for a special performance. Such a lovely instrument-so many options.
Una lastima que sobreactue tanto. Carmen no esta pavoneandose intentando ser la mas chula de la reunion, sino que sensual y felinamente les esta engatusando. Lastima que su interpretacion no este a la altura de su gran voz
In my opinion you also need the ability to "scoop" your notes so that they lead naturally up and down, especially in that opening with Ewing does here rather well. To me that symbolizes Carmen taking the crowd of men around her on a ride of hope and disappointment. But that's just me.
Yes she is fantastic. As I wrote in an other video of Maria, why a "Je t'aaaaime" like that.Pourquoi la finale d'un "Je t'aime" chanté de cette façon?
Best interpretation I have ever seen of the Habanera...I watched this movie and was hooked on Maria. I cannot even abide to hear others sing it now. Brava!
P.S. After watching this again, I have to agree, she really embodies the role, and I like her "less accurate" way of singing it, or you could say, the liberties she takes with the music.
So true. I always enjoyed Habanera, but I never really completely understood or felt passionate about what Carmen was singing until I saw Maria sing the role. She gets so lost in the character. I can forgive the liberties she takes vocally in lieu of characterization.
Is Maria a Mezzo or Soprano? What do you think? I think she is like one of those intermediate voice types, like the original person for this role, Galli-Marié. AMAZING VOICE!
I have seen Habanera for Ponselle, Callas, Gheorghiu, De los Angeles and many others, that sing better than Mary, but Mary is who realley represents the spanish Carmen. Carmen does not recognice any law, but her will, and Maria represents it very well.
I agree - somehow she really embodies the role. Check out Jean Stilwell, Canadian mezzo doing the Habanera too. It's on you tube also. I like it as well.
mmm, at the end of some lines, she seems to skip all too quickly to the next one rather than hold the existing one. But, I love her volume control -- it's very assertive, and too many others don't truly "act" the role.
then perhaps you can forgive her "skipping all too quickly to the next line." The GIVES as Carmen on a platter, and for all the others that sing her, you have to SEARCH for her. Brava!
Then you should check Teresa Berganza performance with Placido Domingo in the Theatre Nationale de Paris. Maria should learn there about sensuality and flirtatiousness, instead of overacting and exaggerating throughout all the area. I'm Spanish myself and I truly believe Teresa Berganza represents far much better the Spanish Carmen (and not only because she is Spanish herself)
I do not totally agree with you. Yes Ms. Berganza is a lovely Carmen but why do we always compare artists between each other ? Berganza's carmen is flirtatious, sweet and attractive. But if you see the whole performance you will notice that Maria's interpretation of the role is much different. She is not flirting she is suffering. It is an alternative way... And between you and me this choice was not up to her but the director. bon sans
@mordaz I´m sorry, I love Berganza, I have always loved her, but not my favourite Carmen, she is my favourite Rossina and I love her in the handel roles. my favourite Carmen until now, is Ewing because her interpretation comes from the very inside, she does not have to move and dance all the time in order to attract that tenor.
A wonderful singer! I knew her many years ago in l968 when she was studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music under Eleanor Steber. She was also a dramatic, well trained singer then, but it seems that she has grown in vocal strength since. Bravo Maria!
Why does she keep pronouncing the "r" like if it was russian?!
