  • PEOPLE!!!! When you learn languages, I do not recommend to compare it to other languages, especially to say "it's like ______ in English". It's NOT!! That's how you develop a bad accent! Just do your best to become a clean slate, like a child, and just LISTEN and IMITATE!!! Then you will actually speak mandarin/japanese/swahili rather than sound like a bad language student, hehe. You can do it, it just takes practice! Take it from someone who speaks 5 languages and people are always impressed!

  • i like your classes

  • Love the music. Ongaku ga suki

  • هو كله دس دس, مافيش شتيمة ولا ايه؟؟

  • 2 years of studying and I'm a complete fail

  • @CoverSongsUnited you're not alone.... :'D

  • @CoverSongsUnited

That's because there's more videos than this one.

  • no no no, kyoto linguisticians- when you are waylaid at a bus stop, by a stranger brandishing a wall-clock and answering her own cronologic questions, this is not conversation.

i like there being a bin near the bus stop. how thoughtful!

  • It's hilarious how some Japanese word sound like English words if u use a Japanese accent. Like "ereba-ta" is elevator and "resson" is lesson

  • @freedfighter96 Hilarious? You know they sound like English because they're loanwords right?

Examples: Asufaruto = Asphalt; Syankou = Thankyou. Loan-words.

  • @HitodamaKyrie Nahh bro it's just a massive coincidence lol. Some people are just unobservant...

  • how do you say "could you please repeat?"

  • Awesome again! Um... that guys - - visiting Japan? And can speak that fluently? I've been trying to.. but not doing so well..the only things I can remember is

"yes" "no" "thank you" "yourwelcome" "I am _____" "And you?" "How're you?" "Iam well" " your welcome" "shut up" " damn it"

"Its risky" "whats that?" and some numbers....

  • this is fabolous, wonderful

    GREAT class.

  • desu like masu is for formal speaking, which is the style you have to speak with almost everyone, Desu, masu is not added to informal speech, for example Jikan ari masu can become jikan aru.

ichi jj desu. can be ichi ji . Not exactly is and are. It is better as a beginner to use formal way, it is easier, you might sound rude without the desu and masu, sometimes especially with verbs in their dictionary forms might sound like a command.

    I'm also learning (;

  • What if the person says you need the, I don't know, say 433 bus, how the hell would you understand that? You'd be like "Ban desu?... What?!?!?!" :P

  • just study the numbers

    433= yonhyaku sanjuu san

not too complicated, you just basically need to learn the numbers from one to ten (ichi, ni, san, shi/yon, go, roku, shichi/nana, hachi, kyuu/ku, juu/ju)

    and add "hyaku" for hundred

    (for example nihyaku is 200)

there are some exeptions, though like 600 = roppyaku 800= happyaku

and the same with ten "juu" for example 20 is as simple as ni(2)juu(10)= "nijuu"

    12 is juu(10)ni(2)= "juuni"

  • the real difficulty is with counting suffixes when counting stuff because it's different for small animals, big animals, long subjects (like pen, rose...) and so on! and the days! first day isn't "ichi nichi" (ichi=1 nichi=day) but it's "tsuitachi" 1. day -tsuitachi 2.day -futsuka 3. day -mikka 4.day -yokka 5. day -itsuka 6.day -muika 7.day -nanoka 8.day -yooka 9.day -kokonoka 10.day -tooka
  • Thanks :D Big help :)!

  • no problem!

  • "desu" with a silent "u" mean that something "is". "Am", "is", and "are" are all the same word in Japanese. It is used when speaking more formally. It goes at the end of sentences because they are not constructed the same way as they are in English. Verbs go at the end of the sentence. "desu" is not a verb and is an exception to the rule.

So when she says "yoji desu" it means "It is four(o'clock)" yoji=4 desu= it is

I'm just starting Japanese but I know that's what it means.

  • Ultra44: "desu is not a verb and is an exception to the rule. "

Not quite. Desu is indeed a verb, or a kind of verb. This can be proven in many ways.

1: "Desu" is often refered to as a "copula". A "copula" can also be called a "copular verb".

2: "Desu" corresponds to the English 'is/are/am'. The rootform of this is 'to be', and is very much a verb. "to walk, to look, TO BE"

3: "Desu" has many other forms. One is "de aru" which, just like many other Japanese verbs, ends with "ru".

  • i don't think so, but "desu" like "function word" in japanese.. it used in positive sentence.. in negative sentence, it changes to "dewa arimasen".. if i'm not wrong.. ;p

  • That guy looked nervous as fuck and the chick was like freaked out and shit lol
