  • The blonde chick in the jets is an amazing dancer! Karen Olivo always rocks though! But that chick is fucking great!!!

  • it's funny the main character's name is Tony and they're at the Tony Awards

  • was it my computer or did she crack up at 4:30?

  • @healthyholemealbread Indeed she did.

  • @healthyholemealbread

I thought so too but I think her mic just clicked off, her voice just goes off for a lil and then comes back it's really weird.

  • I'm sorry, new to the show, what is this number's song title?

  • @pckchck - The name of the scene is "10 PM. The Gym", and the musical number is called "The Dance at the Gym". As you can see, it's actually a combination of several instrumental/dance segments: "Promenade", "Mambo", "Cha-Cha" (when Tony & Maria start dancing together), and concluding with the "Meeting Scene" (first dialogue between Tony & Maria). Tony & Maria singing a portion of "Tonight" (as shown in this clip) does not occur in this scene in the original version of WSS.

  • Karen Olivo is a GODDESS

  • OMG!!! This Tony is just sooo SEXY!!!

  • i sooooo saw this on broadwayy!

  • my heart just sent a signal to my brain to make my eyes to overflow.

  • Everything about this show was fantastic, EXCEPT Tony's voice was distractingly bad. WAY too much vibrato.

  • I ADORE LIN MANUEL MIRNADA

  • Excellent, can't get much better than that. Bravo

  • who is he?......WHO IS HE? I must know his name

  • @sillychad18 oh yeah, and I'd also like to add....3:30....dat ass! xD

  • @sillychad18 According to a post from about five months ago, it's Matt Cavenaugh

  • Ahaha love how at 4:30 she doesn't quite get the note and you can see in their eyes they both know it but they're like 'We're gonna laugh about this in a couple of seconds when we get the hell off stage!' always love a bit of that in the performance :)

  • I wonder why all the Jet girls are wearing mini-dresses while the Shark girls are dressed in period-appropriate attire? It's jarring. Otherwise, the dancing in this production was great.

  • @HumbleHarry I totally agree, however- they didn't do well with Sharks Girls' hair. The Jet's (males) are dressed perfectly! and it's a shame they didn't add the red ribbon to Maria's dress. That would've been good enough for me!

  • i saw the Melbourne one last night and Anita is deffently the best

  • @matttriss How much are the tkts?

  • @matttriss Anita in the movie adaptation was brilliant as well- she's a very charasmatic and definaltey has the best personality of them all. Tony is good too. and Little John

  • It amuses me that in London, Sofia Escobar played Maria, and she's from Portugal, a non-Spanish speaking country xD

  • i saw this on broadway. AMAZING. my favorites are the shark girls and jet boys

  • This is the sexiest Tony ever! The girl in red is stunning as well as Karen Olivo. Great great performance.

  • I love that it's not in english, a great twist

  • Who is that Tony??? Oh My GOD!!!!!!!

  • @yriaswife Matt Cavenaugh

  • @pomkckr3

    Thank you so much!!!

  • My wife and I went to see this play today, we loved it

  • I loved the dance....

  • I love 1:21 - 1:47 so much :P

  • Maria is played by a woman from Argentina, and she is an amazing actress/singer.

  • Puerto Ricans are stereotyped, and it's the same with the Medeterranean people- I'm Greek and I'm as pale as Emmy Rossum, which is VERY pale, and even though most people I know really are tanned/dark skinned, I'm an exception, and so is that girl. It's not such a big deal!

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan i agree with you. i'm puerto rican and not tan.

  • If Aaron Tveit wasn't doing Next to Normal at this time, he would have been a really good Tony.

But don't get me wrong, I am so thankful he was in Next to Normal <3

  • Maria looks like she belongs with the Jets.

  • @AventuraLuver maybe, but thats cuz everyone think that all latin have dark skins, josefina who plays maria is latin shs from argentina, im form argentina too and im as pale as her. sorry about my english.

  • Karen Olivo is a machine. Such a well deserved Tony.

  • I Love how he yells TOM KITT in the beginning.

  • I don't know how many will agree with me, but Karen Olivo is the sexiest Anita I've ever seen.

  • These youtube clips of the current west side story on Broadway are like negative advertising for the show...no wonder it is in financial trouble. Seeing theguy playing Tony in these clips would be like poison to ticket sales.

  • I actually saw this cast perform when I saw the show back in February. They're incredible! ESPECIALLY MARIA! Her voice was breathtaking! And Tony's voice was really good too, but seriously that boy is gorgeousss.

  • I just started crying... why am I such a sap?

  • i like how people are like "she doesn't look like a puerto rican!!"

wtf are we "supposed" to look like?

  • that girl looks like the older daughter from mrs. doubtfire all grown up ahaha

  • I think this was the best song performed at the 2009 Tonys.

  • i love anita!!

  • our maching band show is this

  • Please! Who is this man???

  • The high schools from the North End of our District did West Side Story for Summer Theatre Workshop and we did Singin in the Rain on South Side. They were AMAZING!!! Their Maria was a blonde American girl but nobody knew until after the performance when we met the cast. They did this scene superbly! All the Sharks wore red and the Jets wore blue or green. The dancing was exquisite.

  • this is probably a stupid question but is this the exact same cast i would have seen when i saw west side story on broadway in january of this year (2010)?

  • wasn't Natalie Cortez supposed to play Maria? what happened to her?

  • @BigRichInCO Oh i know this! haha well arthur laurtents wanted someone younger and fresher and Natalie Cortez is a little to old for Maria.

  • Saw this on Broadway. Never has been one of my favorites, but I gotta admit the dancing was good!

  • Her voice didn't crack. The tony"s was having all kinds of sound problems that day.

  • In their defense, their acting was sooo much better in the actual Broadway performance.

  • Her voice cracked? really?

  • the girl doesnt even look or sound puerto rican!

  • @africaneve2 she's from argentina

  • @africaneve2 I don't look or sound Puerto Rican, I have freckles and very fair skin. So I personally think she can pass as a Puerto Rican.

  • @africaneve2 i didn't think so either! i was like... is she Caucasian with a bad accent? shes actually from some spanish country i was shocked.

  • @nonstopsassinator She's from Argentina and people there are white, descendants from Germans, Spanish and Italians...

  • @Prenisonona lol nice. thnx 4 the history lesson. XD

  • @nonstopsassinator thats stupid shocked cuz shes white and latin, im white and latin too, many of us are...stupid.

  • @dasophie99 what??

  • @africaneve2 she's Argentinian

  • This is my absolute favorite scene in this show! I hated the movie, but I saw the show last weekend and fell in love!! Watching it on youtube, though, doesn't give it justice. Go see it on broadway!! It's so amazing!!!!

  • @BuddyTheSuperdog same I can't stand the movie verison.

  • @BuddyTheSuperdog you liked the revival? when i saw it the dancing was of course incredible... but i thought the jets as a unit were terrible and that rly hurt the show

  • she is so beautiful!

  • i don't like this. i like the movie too much to hear the song in anyone elses' voices.

  • the passion in her eyes is beautiful

  • lea michele deserved this more than josefina. better preformer overall in my opinion!!

  • @conversejunkie2222 oh no not at all not even by a slim chance culd lea pull off this show dnt get me wrong i love lea but her voice isnt up to this yes lea has an amazing powerful voice but it dsnt have the feel and raw emotion that the characters have to have in this musical i do like josefina's voice but i dnt like that shes really light she looks white not puerto rican but other than that shes great

  • well, they definitely modernized this with those short, tight little dresses.

  • @LittleMissMaggieMae I think they wanted to differenciate the Puerto Ricans and the Americans. Notice how all of the Americans have short dresses, and they're all rediculously pale, and have blonde, red or light brown hair, whereas the Puerto Ricans have long dresses, etc.

  • i wanna be a part of this, but i think i couldn't, poor me:(

  • @gzel17 well not with that attitude :D

  • Oh the Tonys are tomorrow night!!! I cannot wait :D

  • Wait, so is the music the same?

  • @jacobflaschen Yes, the music is the same. The only difference is that except for the song "America", all of the songs sung by the Sharks/Puerto Ricans (I Feel Pretty, A Boy Like That, the Sharks' part in Tonight [quartet], etc), were translated into Spanish, the native language of the Sharks. Lin Manuel Miranda, who introduced the performance and who composed In The Heights, was asked by Sondheim to do the translating. :)

  • i just saw this last week, and it was so amazing

  • Karen while not perfect does deserve the Tony she really is amazing and sings and dances so well.

  • what song is this called? the one that plays all throughout the big dance number. I LOVE IT

  • The greatest musical ever. Period. End of discussion!

  • I don't even know what this is but it is so awesome and i love the way the ppl act it out

  • she cracked at the end.... fail

    :-/

you really should look hispanic when youre maria too.

i mean, its supposed to be romeo and juliet.

from opposite sides of the world in the eyes of family/race matters.

just because the chick in the movie was actually white doesnt mean the broadway one has to look white too.

come on people! get the hispanics in the theatre too!

  • @lizapoo She is Hispanic. Her name is pronounced "Hosefina," she's from Argentina, and Hispanics can look white. I have a couple of friends whose parents immigrated from Cuba, and they look white.

  • @LifeLoveMusical

the actual woman AND maria are from argentina in this version?

    they changed the script?

so in the song "america" instead of singing "puertoooo ricoooo..." they sing "argentinaaaa"

    this isnt Avita! haha

  • @lizapoo LOL! :)

  • @lizapoo No, no, Maria is still Puerto Rican, but Josefina Scaglione is Argentinian.

  • @lizapoo dude... shes argentinian

  • i know that this maria is from argentina and shes wonderful and all but i really wish that they had casted a darker maria she looks like she culd be tonys lil sister here=/ i love west side story and this two r brillant but i think next time a darker maria shuld be cast

  • GO SOFIA ESCOBAR!!!

  • i just finished watching west side story today... i was tearing up at the end!

  • Does anyone know who is playing tony here?

  • @liekkk90 its Matt Cavenaugh

  • I was in this musical my freshman year of high school Im a junior now and the songs are still stuck in my head

  • I love West Side Story.

Check my videos and see how my band performed the famous West Side Story medley. Hope you enjoy it :D

  • Hell yeah dance at the gym. As a pit musician for my high school's musical I can honestly say that the pit for West Side Story's is one of the best.

  • We opening this show on Saturday! We were so inspired with the Spanish lyrics, we're singing a part of a boy like that in Spanish. Lin is amazing

  • I expected it to be good :) and it obv is just nothing can match up to the movie as it was AMAZING

  • my school is doing this production this next week..I'm playing the role of velma, and I'm super excited! :D

  • HOLY TONY. Look at that sexy man. I don't know so much about his voice, but wheeeew.

  • @whitetiefilms hell yes!!

  • i like this verison of the dance better than the movies

  • I mean shot

  • I haven't seen it yet but my sister did is it true at the end it's pretty much he yells Maria and then he gets show and she sings a song?

This isn't my first I saw wicked with my AVID class.

  • @koda440 me too I saw wicked on tour

  • Saw this this last week it was very very wow, it was my first broadway musical it was omg omg so cool omg amazing freaking jesus god

  • frickin amazing mambo but i wasn't really loving the tony and maria.......and it must have sucked when she lost her note at the end. but still i love this. great show.

  • who is in the red dress?

  • I saw this on broadway about 3 days ago and I have to say, I wasn't really feeling Josefina scagliones voice. It could have been stronger. She's an incredible actress though, and plays innocence better than anyone, natalie wood included. And the new Tony, Matthew hydzik is SPECTACULAR. So much better than Matt cavenaugh. I think they take into account most audience members don't speak Spanish so it's pretty easy to understand. I think it only enhances it.

  • i'd give anything to see this on broadway! Matt Cavenaugh is also pretty easy on the eyes.

  • it really bothers me that tony is the only one who isn't dressed up. not even a collared shirt? really?

  • @SwedishChef13 yeah it looks like what a guy would wear out to the mall......not a dance...............

  • I understand the idea of having the Sharks speak Spanish since, after all, that is the language they probably would have spoken had they been real, but the people coming to see the show are English speakers who probably had no idea what the Sharks were saying. I understand the idea, I just think it was a bad one... but hey, they had to do something different to justify a revival.

  • i saw west side story over spring break but with the new tony and it was sooo good!

  • In the new one, do they speak in spanish alot?

  • @wickedboy13 not too much. i saw it a while ago, and only two songs are in total spanish. so if you know the story, you'll be fine. if you don't, you might have a bit of trouble understanding it.

  • @wickedboy13 no not to much. every now and then but it was easy to understand. the new tony is amazing to.

  • If it were just that easy to fall in love !!!! But no !!! Now we have all these expectations, Dating rules and things like that. It's a wonder anyone can fall in love at all anymore.

  • I saw this in Cardiff last year... the international tour. Soooo amazing!

  • I'd see West Side over and over again just to watch them do this number. The electricity is amazing! The music and the dancing make for a great number. I adore this show!

  • Josefina and Matt make the best Maria and Tony ever<3

  • If you just get a spray tan and dye your hair that would work. I was in high School Musical and the girl who played Gabriell was pale as the moon with red hair... So yeah that would work. Lol

  • thanks so much for all those who've helped :)

  • what i would like to know, is do u have to be or look puerto rican to be maria. because when im older i may want to audition, but i dont really look puerto recan because of my green eyes. any help?

  • @LaurenAndJennaP Latin people come in all shapes and colors. Im latin and I look, I guess, like the typical latin girl.brown hair, eyes and tan skin. My cousin has white fair skin & light hair color, then I have another cousin who looks as if they were african american. As far back as we can trace back my family we are all latin. So all latins can be tan, white or black. So I guess if you have the talent thats all that really matters, also if the show is still around when your old enough

  • @CubicalGirl

This show is so amazing if it doesn't carry on onbroadway, west end or touring, there will definateley be some revivals at some point!! :D

  • @CubicalGirl I agree ... latin is not a race but a culture. It's like saying Will Smith is American not black when he is considered a black American. If you're a black latino, it just means you have African roots and a latin culture. If you are a white latino, it just means you have european roots. If you are brown, you may have more native american roots. Of course, over the years, all three cultures have mingled which is why you get light and dark people in the same families.

  • Nice point. BUT! Puerto Rican is a race.

  • @CubicalGirl ok, thank you so much! you just gave me alot of relief, again, thanks! :)

  • Omg! So do I, like, I'm your typical latin boy. tan skin, brown long straight hair. with brown eyes. My cousin; she's white and she has blonde hair!!

We Puerto Ricans are a mixed of three which makes us different and unique.

  • umm, because the whole point of the musical is the conflict between the puerto rican's and the jets......i mean the whole reason the plot of the story is because maria is puerto rican and tony is not...................

  • Get Contacts? XD

  • There are many Puerto Ricans with green and blue eyes... We come in all shapes, colors and shades... =)

  • Hahaha. Yes we doo!!!

  • I saw West Side Story done years ago with Lea Salonga as Maria, and she's the woman who did Miss Saigon. It's totally up to the director's interpretation. You should be fine, looks can be changed for the stage, it's your talent directors care most about :-) good luck!

  • her name is Josefina Scaglione

  • Who is the actress at 3:30? She's gorgeous.

  • whos the actress at the end

  • Awesome. Damn good mambo!

  • Who is the actor and the actress, I cannot figure it out.

  • Impressive too, I love the actress who plays Anita, including the best character musical.O duet final, fine, despite the stumbling block of actress who plays Maria in the end of the song Tonight.

    BRAVO!

  • that Tony needed a suit to sport for my taste maybe cause I saw the movie I can't see them so sport : (

  • SAME HERE!

  • i love u tonyy

  • My school is doing this musical next year! This looks really cool. I love the choreography. The guy playing Tony has a nice butt :P

  • I wish the new Tony they cast actually had some personality and some chemistry with Josefina as Maria. There was no spark between them at all, and Matt's vocals were lackluster. I really wanted to like him, but it didn't happen. I hope he grows into the role. Best of luck, Matt!

  • i like matthew hydzik better than this guy as tony!!!

  • Josefina is such an amazing Maria but I think her co-worker, "Tony", has a nasally voice and is really not that good of an actor.

  • @SessRin1778 true but he has a nice ass!

  • LOL!

  • Has the guy playing Tony forgotten his costume, or is this for real? His hair's entirely anachronistic too.

Aside from that, this is pretty damn good. Velma is utterly sick!

  • Absolutely!! Where are his chino pants, white dress shirt and narrow black tie? And what's with the messy modern day 'do? Get some Brylcreem and slick it back!

  • Yes!

Brylcreem is the future. And the past.

    It's basically everything.

  • It binds the Universe together. Just ask Obi-wan.

  • It's made of midichlorians.

  • My Force Detector is off the charts!

  • hola 1 b

  • Josefina makes a perfect Maria - although it must have just killed her when she lost her note at 4:29 - poor thing! what a moment!

  • @MissLizaMay so i didnt dream of that rediculus note? god it was an awful note, it nearly ruined the thing.!

  • @MissLizaMay she kept going though, which is how you're supposed to do it. she didn't let it get in her head, which is the sign of a good actor.

  • @MissLizaMay I know! But I guess you can't blame her...it is a pretty high note :) She recovered well though

  • love cody green!! matt and josefina are adorable!!!

  • tony is gorgeous but weak. Maria is pretty good, not fantastic.

  • The girl who plays Maria is Josefina Scagglione and she is from my country, Argentina. I got to see her in the local production of Hairspray. She played Barbie Von Tussle and she dhdn't show off her soprano skills that much but she did and amazing acting. That proves how versatil she is, since Barbie and Maria are completely different characters!
