"I only wanted something else to do but hang-around"
Genius lyrics. No wonder we have young kids being vandals, on drugs, or joining gangs. Nothing much to do in a suburban home but TV & computers except the ocassional stroll in the park. You just have to make do of what you got. :(
I grew-up in the '80s & I'm only realizing now the depth & meaning of this song.
The suburban sprawl was a result of the industrialization of America and the population growth right after WWII. But somehow the suburbia we've come to love has further isolated us as human beings. The suburbs, lacking public transport is far from the city & far from nature. It fails in the social aspect of man.
When was the last time you've seen a neighbor talk to each other or a parade being held in the suburb? None! In the suburbs, you always need a car to go to the nearest store or cafe. Not very good for human interaction. This song is as relevant today as it was over 20 years ago with the home foreclosures we see today. Very prophetic- the genius of Petshop Boys.
When I *first* heard this song in the 80s, I had a vision that what is described in the lyrics would soon happen in the Boston suburb of Medford, Mass! Well, not only is this pair a matched set of excellent musicians, they're also PROPHETS to boot! For these things are happening in elsewhere, and due to the mortgage meltdown, I don't think it will be long before these sorts of things occur in Medford, as well!
It's the same thing. The words to Anyone can fall in love went with the theme tune to Eastenders, the theme tune has always been the same, just changed slightly over the years.
I don't mean the actual rhythm of the tune is exactly the same, i mean the sound of the instrument is similar.I even read a review somewhere, and even they said the sound on " Suburbia " is similar to the Eastenders theme tune.
Yes, this song was made for the movie " Suburbia ".I'm sure i read that somewhere.
Does the music in this song remind anyone of the theme music in " Eastenders " ?.For anyone who hasn't seen it, " Eastenders " is a British soap opera. The music in " West end girls " reminds me of it too.
This doesn't sound anything like Eastenders, are you sure your not thinking of Anyone Can Fall In Love by Anita Dobson, that was the Eastenders theme tune turned into a pop song (Anita at the time played Angie Watts in Eastenders)
Great track. Pet Shop Boys reminds me so much of growing up in the 80's...a happier and simpler life!!! My mates dad worked for EMI in the 80's and knew them personally.
I cannot agree more with you..West End Girls had a great commercial success but Suburbia somehow is way better in my opinion, I feel attached to this song.
god how i loved them in the 80's pet shop boys was the first tape i bought n how i loved chris lowe...i loved him! there pictures was plastered al over my bedroom then i grew up... they need to re-release that song it's soooo good its better than what's out there now even the video is still pretty good
Suburbia, where some douche-bag developer short changed a farmer for his land in order to cram many $700K homes into every square yard of land, thus, creating the rats in a cage syndrome leaving society wondering why people loose it and become short fused.
I love the way Neil sprays that fly spray......bloody flys I'll kick your ass gay style!!!.....dont abuse me I love this band, and I genuinely love how he uses that spray. Its the only way to spray I say!!

Brought back memories of being raised in the San Fernando Valley where it was filmed. Back in the 1980s, I was so taken by the mantel scene w/ the photo of the pug, because we owned a pug, that I designed the fireplace in our new house to have a ceramic pug at the hearth. And there it has set the past 5 years

being of indian descent, i love the pet shop boys. while a lot of bnp supporting, council estate dwelling scum say that i should listen to indian music and not pet shop boys, i tell them to go take a hike because pet shop boys beliefs are like mine: left oriented. neil tennant is gay and i am indian descent, so we are both 'minorities' in the majority WASP (white anglo saxon protestant) community. never mind that jesus christ was an arab jew!
Excellent song which will never age with time. Great news about upcoming Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Long overdue. Thank you Pet Shop Boys.

SUBURBIA-petshop boys, FEELS LIKE HEAVEN-fiction factory, GHOST IN YOU-psychedelic furs, SECRET-o.m.d, WISHINGFUL THINKING-china crisis, are my fave songs for the 80's.... nice rottweilers in this video...
neil tennant has created 2 of the most succesful of 80 (suburbia) and 90 (being bored). Only for that 2 songs its one of the genius and biggest man of tecno-rock. No matter the other songs...
I wouldnt call em a one hit wonder. They had #1 hit with west end girls, #10 with opportunities, #2 with what have i done to deserve this with dusty springfield, #9 its a sin, #4 always on my mind remake and couple other top 40 songs like domino dancing. If i were to knock them it would be their left wing socialist eurotrash politics. Their music pretty good.
Probably my all time fav song.

The music to EastEnders goes:
Der der der der dum dum dum
Der der der der der
Der derrrr der der der
But this music does:
Dum
Dum de dum
De dum duddy dum de dum
Dum de da da - Dum de da da
So, no they are clearly nothing alike, what you going on about ????

I wouldnt call em a one hit wonder. They had #1 hit with west end girls, #10 with opportunities, #2 with what have i done to deserve this with dusty springfield, #9 its a sin, #4 always on my mind remake and couple other top 40 songs like domino dancing. If i were to knock them it would be their left wing socialist eurotrash politics. Their music pretty good.
