  • There's no arguing that this car is not safe. No amount of gas is worth a trip to the hospital. If you can't make cars this small safe, don't make them!

  • @59summerset looks pretty safe to me. Performed as well as any compact car would. and this is just bit smaller than sub compacts

  • @59summerset You're just a stupid hater. Had Ford or Chevy made a compact car, you'd be like "Yeah awesome! Safe car!" You just like those stupid big trucks

  • the engine on the 2008-present Toyota iQ

    Engine

    1.0 L I3

    1.3 L petrol I4

    1.4 L diesel I4

  • Good Car :-)

  • I can't wait for that initial IIHS test at 40 MPH to see this massive failure crushed beyond recognition! The Smart was a piece of genuine German automotive engineering compare to this Japanese POS when it was demolished against a C-Class in the safety test. This garbage on 4-wheels will completely disintegrated when it's time is due in our test. Maybe the IIHS will be lenient and will crash it against a bicycle to save the japs more embarrassment.

  • @Cargo1273

Why are you such a whiny bitch? What? Some Japanese girl couldn't stand you? Some Japanese guy beat the shit out of you? You drive a crappy old Toyota? Because you have Porsche aspirations but a Hyundai budget?

  • dear euroncap,

based on the last test i have this to say, your dummies are inaccurate attempt making real life humans, they dont react like that to crashes, they don't flop forward and back like they are made from paper, and the way they are dressed is awful, i'd like to see if you can find anyone who wears those shoes, and also, i have to say, that noone in the real world would crash like this, especially as these cars are crashed when new, most cars would have aged a bit before crashing

  • @razzberry315 what u meant is next time u would drive ur car and be the driver on the crash test like this! Yes, u r right... those dummies are not real life human, but for test like this, what they have are those dummies. Unless they can find some volunteers.

  • @leofishoh no not me haha, im too valueable, i meant just ,more life like dummies

  • Looks like better results than the smart car. i anxiously await the Scion IQ in the states, i think it will catch on to a wildfire and make the smart car look like a joke.

  • one of my favourite cars is fucking safe!

  • when is it coming to the U.S.?

  • The EURONCAP needs a much more demanding side impact test. The current one is to easy to pass. A barrier representing a car, weighing 2000 pounds is crashed into the side of the car at 31MPH. The IIHS's test is also at 31MPH but that barrier represents a large truck and is also MUCH heavier. The NHTSA has a similar barrier to the NHTSA but theirs weighs 1000pounds more and takes place at 39MPH.

  • よし!

    決めた!

    買おう!!!

  • They should do a rear impact crash test and see how it fairs...

  • The tests are done @ 64 km/h for at least two reasons.

1: Before an impact you likely apply your brakes. 80kmph + braking = ca. 64 kmph. A road with more than 80km/h has fences and no oncoming traffic, thereby minimal chances of a dead stop like in the movie.

2: Our body can't survive a full stop from anything more than approximately 70 Km/h, due to the G-forces rupturing our internal organs.

You can have the world's safest car, but if you stop dead (heh) from 70 km/h or so, you die.

  • Well, I was just wondering why current formula 1 drivers survive crashes? Do you know anything about this?

  • Good question (i.e. I don't know)! I'd be interested in that too.

What jumps to mind first is that F1 brakes are incredibly effective, which helps to decelerate very quickly. In addition F1 drivers have good reaction time.

Maybe it helps to be in good shape too, I dunno.

This was so interesting, so I've sent an e-mail to someone who probably knows.

  • Kostia, F1 cars have incredibly rigid shells, according to the f1 site they have kevlar on the inside to prevent shards of carbon fibre piercing through. The drivers themselves are very healthy, they wear crash helmets, multi-point seatbelts and a neckbrace which basically keeps them from moving around. I imagine most injuries in car accidents are due to people/things flying around inside the car so you wouldn't really have that problem in f1.

Try searching formula 1 safety on google.

  • i wonder how it will fare against bigger cars like the Camry? cause the crash test results are only relevant for crashes against the car of similar size i.e. in this case we can only see what happens if the IQ hits cars like the Tata nano or the smart car so the results will be different if it hits SUVs or trucks.

  • The barrier wich the car hits is exactly the same size and weight for every kind of car they test,it has nothing to do with the size of the car in question.

So it doesn't matter if it the IQ or a Hummer, they use exactly the same size of equipments to test them. Otherwise it would be the same as faking the tests.

  • Would hate to be in this car and have an accident with a real sized vehicle rather than just taking the impact against its own weight as it is here

  • stupid comment, think and learn before you talk

  • it's true.

    64 kmh is slow speed.

  • if you crash at 120 no car in the world saves you. All euroncap crashes are done at 64km/h.

p.s. if you crash at 120 it means 2 things:

    1) you were going at 170+ and decreased to 120

    2) you're retarded and didn't even press the brakes for 2sec

  • @mythos1453 ...or 3) you engaged in a frontal crash, where BOTH drivers were going with 60 km/h (which is actually 4km/h less than the euro ncap standar)

  • @jmanolitsis Dont you mean 56km/h more than the ncap?

  • @dealviinde ...for each of the drivers

  • @jmanolitsis The impact speed is 120 for both cars.

  • @jmanolitsis Physics actually disagrees with you on that one. Two cars going at 60, hitting front on is the equivalent of one car hitting a wall at 60, not 120. I know that seems counter intuitive, but it's a fact. Hell, they even tested it on Myth Busters.

  • actually 64kmph is a perfect test speed as it is actually 39.7mph. Most UK within the city and urban areas (where this car is designed for) are limited to 30mph

  • really? captin obvious :)) well because it has no potin to test it at that speed; there is yen no good protection for that;

  • You wouldn't survive so there is no point testing at that speed.

  • vmj28 right but the smart is horrible u would die in the car if u crash a 70 mph

  • why don't they sell these in the United States? We already have smart cars and they are a huge hit. Toyota would make some good money if they put this car on the American market.

  • All american cars are $hit, including ford

  • er...no mate do some catr research europian fords (my mondeo)

    are made in EUROPE!

  • have you driven EVERY single model of car that america has made? that includes model years and mid-cycle freshenings. now, im not gonna lie, many american cars are awful. i know that from experience. but you cant say they are all shit if you havent driven at least a huge amount of them. some of them are great cars that last many years.

  • American cars=torque

this is why America is losing it's share of car business

with the constant rising in oil prices, American car sales are degrading

American cars are nothing more than torque at a very low price

  • Well, unfortunately American car manufacturers are responding to their market. For a while no people have wanted smaller cars in the USA, so when Smart came here people were excited. Now they're here people are less excited and sales have declined significantly. Hopefully electric cars will give the torque that Americans want with the fuel efficient greenies and the rest of the world desires.

  • Also, American car manufacturers are loosing business because these HUGE companies do not respond quickly to changing customer demand. GM is a large corporation that has little turnover, so in a company you'd expect to be innovative they stagnate because of the old ideas they keep in management.

  • I don't think they actually can.

For long American cars have been favoured for their torque, space and above average reliability. Nowadays car manufacturers like Honda have designed their cars to meet that need with a practical design.

Japanese reliability is impeccable. That is I believe the highest attribute to most consumers.

pollution also is being part of peoples contiousness (especially in developed nations), not to mention higher gas prices.

    Honda>Toyota>Ford>Gm

  • @Alomaim What an amazingly generic statetment which gets less true by the month. 20 years ago..sure. 10 years ago...ok. But in 2010, not even close. I am sure that you have little to no experience in some of the newest domestic and even Korean models.

  • @2003SCT OK sure Ford has an amazing car called the Fiesta, but that too was built and designed in Germany.

The US seems to lack the engineering required to built great small cars which will be dominant n the future.

Even if they do, they have a long way to forgo their reputation for gas guzzling huge unreliable cars.

For years American cars have been just flat out BIG & STUPID (e.g. GM)

  • @Alomaim You know the best small American car is an AMC pacer and believe this was motherfucker shit of a car

  • @Alomaim Its not that the US lacks the engineering capability...the main thing is that small cars have never been the focus. And reality changes much faster than perceptions. Toyota for example, gets a pass when it comes to fuel economy even though their entire lineup in the US isn't really focused on fuel economy. Sequoia, FJ Cruiser, Tundra, large Lexus gas drinkers, Land Cruiser, Tacoma just to name a few...all get mpgs in the teens. Once again, reputation need not represent reality nowadays

  • i agree

  • @Alomaim actually look at the new ford taurus SHO, it's pretty damn good!

at least americans now start using turbocharges

  • @Alomaim But no more than the killing Toyota with their faulty quality and multiple recalls.

  • @Cargo1273 Toyota (Lexus) is 20 years ahead of ANY american car company. Face it, americnas build the worst cars in the world today. Even Koreans overtook them....

  • @derbigpr500 Good point if it werent for the Japs and European the Americans would still be driving Fred Flintstone stylee. Japs Build the most reliable cars in the world, The Germans technical Excellence, The Italians Style and Image, The British Opulence, the Americans Brash chrome and lust for V8 power the Model T ford and the AMC Pacer. Without the Japs the Americans would have had nothing to aim towards.

  • @Cargo1273 Do you know how many fucking recalls Ford and Chevy have had?

  • @Alomaim except european constructed ford

  • This car is equipping it with the air bag for the ceiling behind a back seat.

    Operating, I want to see.

  • i wanna have one, wääääh!

  • toyotas ROCK that why my mother has a yaris

  • this car has airbag in the rear window, just to protect the head of the rear passengers. it's the first car in the world with airbag in the rear window

  • no it does not.

  • My Mistake then, obviously... The cushion of air between the head of of the rear passenger and the two tonne of steel crashing into it from behind is sure to hold the van/suv/car at bay....... There is no way at all that the bonnet of a higher riding vehicle could come through the window and actually through an Impenetrable airbag - I think I will stick to a car with space between me and the windows.....

  • It is the first car with a rear window airbag because it doesn't have a boot unlike a normal car which would otherwise absorb rear end crash impact. No big deal really.

  • its a city car.. espacially ofr crowded ones..

  • rubbish?

    British cars are rubbish lad

  • Even the Tata Nano did better

  • Just because it doesn't crumple as much, doesn't mean it's safer. The crumpling effect absorbs the impact, whereas the lack of crumple in the Nano means the shock of the impact would be transferred to the passengers.

Obviously you don't want the crumple to come too far into the cabin, otherwise that would screw the passengers up as well.

So there's more to it than meets the eye. Which is why they do these tests.

Nothing against the Nano - it's built to a price and all that...

  • The Nano and the IQ look like they had similar damage. But for the price the Nano wins hands down. If I have to buy a small car I would definatly go for a cheaper one, you know for everyday use, then a big nice car for weekends.

The IQ and Nano will be competing in the same segment and toyota have very nice models but this is incredibly ugly and the price in Europe is too much

  • You're missing the point.

  • Toyota always have the best safety record, thats why i have one:)

  • Sorry, it's Renault.

  • The best car is a Toyota, no doubt, thats why its the biggest company in the world:))

  • The Smart ForTwo is not as safe as the iQ, please check your facts before commenting.

  • ok dude srry for not gettin my facts rite srry =[

  • very good for such a small car, look at the new suzuki alto it only got 3 stars!!

  • Who are they fooling with this test. fact your internal organs will be crashed against your rib cage and die of internal bleeding. the airbags only help the exteior body and skeleton.

  • So to say, your ignorance is infinite. Thanks for watching this video, but you are not welcomed. :)

  • obviously you know nuts about the IQ...

  • that's probably because ur IQ isn't high enough for the IQ eh? although Canada will be the first country in the American Continent to get one.

  • this is toyota

    excellent

  • it's a light thing that's why it's so safe

  • 1:18 hihihi

  • wow what a great car! Go toyota

  • @ flip2mac

LOL of course it will be, just because EVERY car in the world will be! Any direct frontal impact with more than 30 km/h is guaranteed to be lethal if you are not using Seatbelts. With Seatbelts and so on you can survive crashs up to around the speeds these tests are done at.

There is simply no point in testing any car for frontal impact at highway speed because there can be no technology desiged that would enable you to survive such a crash.

  • That looks a little dang

  • Toyota is all Hype, they will end up like GM soon, just look at their sales, they dropping faster than ever. Why pay for a car like this. EuroNcap is joke, they should test a car at highway speeds and we will see what happens to the IQ. (IQuashed)

  • look at their sales?

they are doing better than any others

  • You cannot compare with others, you need to compare with last year's sales, Toyota is losing sales, they are losing Millions. Last year(2008) Toyota did no profit!, they made a loss.

  • who did a profit these last year? So yes you need compare with others and this is the first time Toyota is in bad situation while GM and chrysler was about a long time before and peugeot renault too

  • everyone is loosing sales stupid, only difference is toyota could make sale losses for the next decade but would still have enough cash reserves to keep going. The products are very borning but the are great engineers

  • It is indeed very well engineered. Although the impact energy will be far less for this car due to it's weight, the small occupant survival space poses a big challenge for passive safety performance.

  • i respect toyota but one day hyundai/kia will overtake them, the are developing faster than any other auto maker

  • toyota is number one and the 5 others are japanese too

  • of course i know toyota is number 1 largest now. what are you talking about

  • well you said kia and hyunday are developping faster car, this is a fantasy add up all the cars made by hyundai and kia they cant even do the half of the car made by toyota in one year

  • i talking about rate of product development, including quality, reliability etc. The are constanly climbing the ranks in matter of units produced faster than any other manufacturer, in 5 -8 years time the could well be world number 1

  • "People who tell you what will happen tomorrow are liars" W. Churchill

According to some analysts the chinese will sell their first car in 2007 (that was in 2005) they failed all their tests (watch in youtube chinese crash test) they said the samething again in 2006 but china failed again plus with the crisis right now according to big car makers (toyota gm nissan ford etc) the rate of product will decrease.

  • Chinese will keep failing no matter what, they suck at everything they do. Toyota has the fanboys to keep it going, but I am sure the will see the Indians taking over the motor industry. Eg. Tata, in a year, they bought Jag/Land Rover and now they bring the Nano,(Which already has great test drive reviews and it;s not even out yet)

  • whatever if india will success because I prefer india and japan instead of china& japan

  • Its a very nice car but i still cant believe that Toyota claim that is seats 4 adults comfortably. It dose when the front seat is all the way forwards.

I still think Toyota's are the best all around car manufacturer.

  • Yeah, and a large care like the Audi Q7 will always crush a small car like the iQ because it´s much heavier. It´s like a fly against your hand ^^

I got my iQ 1 month ago and I love it and its beautiful white^^. First I thought it looks so narrow but the space is really big and I feel totaly comfortable.

My friends often ask me why I didn´t buy a BMW and they laugh about it but I think I´m young, my dad payed the car and I have enough time to buy such a care someday ^^ ( if I want )

  • And it´s free of tax for several years because of the very low CO2 emission

  • Well We have 2 Small Family Cars, NOT City Cars at are House!!!!

Both Are As Safe As Each Other: 4 * NCAP

So, if they crash into each other at 30 mph, you should walk away or limp away

At least its: Better Than Not Waking Away At All

  • You're full of it... same test for all cars and the iQ was rated higher as the 2009 tests are even tougher... the iQ is a superb example of a small car with big safety and I for one say well done Toyota for making a safe, reliable and most importnantly interesting car for once!

  • wow that's a good car

  • 5 star for ncap i think its like 3 or 4 for passenger, well it wont take much to stop one of these anywayss cos if its size..

turning circle 3.9 will do a 180 in 4 meters LOL.

these things will do 80mph! quicker than a smart on drugs XD

  • Its amazing how they managed to do a 5* rating in such a small car.

I love this car, better looking than a smart and have you seen the turning circle.

Only the japanese can build something like this.

  • looks like the smart.. but personally prefer it.. it looks better.. and it has more space

  • looks like a smart but the iq looks better

  • Just brought one too, collect it thursday, although I don't expect to crash it!

  • Well, I've just bought one.

    Collect it next Friday.

    Should be fun!

  • the frontal part of the car deformed to absorb the impact whilest the cockpit remained still.Thats a great result.

  • Well for a Start, working for Toyota and selling these cars is one thing,

but seeing the criticism appearing.. hmm 9 air bags? ABS? TC? Stability control? 4 seats? 1 litre engine? keyless entry all in 3 meters?

    If this is technology now.

Then whats it going to be like in 10 years time?

  • good car

  • By saying that, you're becoming a xenophobe yourself. GM, Ford aren't popular in Japan because they don't meet the requirements of Japanese cities. Have you seen the Japanese Cube cars? they're insanely easy to park. XBOX 360 fails because it was made for a different audience. Japanese people prefer RPGs, when was the last good XBOX RPG? Undoubtedly there are a few, but not enough. Apple iPhone, Motorola fail because Japanese mobiles are extremely advanced compared to other markets.

  • For example 3G is the norm. Japanese phones have OneSeg TV and DoCoMo' wireless wallet. And poor iPhone sales also have nothing to do with xenophobia, since the iPod is incredibly popular in Japan.

  • Very good. Safety is important.

  • you are ugly you dumbass piece of cunt

  • you fucking dumbass John is fags name you slut

  • fuck you

  • you slut

Smart and Toyota rocks and you suck a dick John faggot

  • Dude, I am just saying the Smart is really safe. I never said this Toyota isn't more or less safe, I was just saying the Smart was. Back off jeez

  • lol, umm thats good, wow u would be so screwed if you got hit by anything bigger than that POS. A tahoe would just abliterate that ugly thing

  • a tahoe is a POS. lardy, poorly packaged, dynamically poor POS

  • haha thats funny, thats why the hybrid model gets better mpgs than a camery. and holds 7 and can tow... u completely missed the point that. if it gets hit buy any SUV or CUV or full size sedan your screwed

  • youre absolutelly 100% correct i couldnt agree with you more i would never ever buy one... if someone gave me one id slap them then burn it so no one else would put is on the road... but if i was in a crash... id rather be in the tahoe then the toyota IQ

  • Why are you comparing small, safe and fuel economic city car to the ugly heavyweight crate you 're used to drive?

I dont trhink americans ever invented anything economic, compact and THAT safe like this unique car is.

That's just your complex to bitch about anything.

How surprising you come from America...

  • crash the tahoe with another tahoe or a truck and see how that goes..

  • tahoe is a badly build, poorly packaged, dynamically flawed POS

  • the ugliness barrier shielded most of it from impact.

  • Incredible, Toyota engineers are incredible! This small thing has got the best results (91%) for adult occupant in the New Euro NCAP rating scheme, better than Mazda 6 (77%) and Subaru Impreza (84%).

  • dont forget that the performance of the crash is only compareable with car of the same size.

    (Fiat 500 vs Audi Q7)

But still, very good performance from a car of that size!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, if you crash into a heavy car, you have really a problem. Precisely the EuroNCAP test the crash performance into a wall, that is like crashing into an equal car. So, crashing into an equal car, or into a wall, it's better with a 500 than with a Q7, and crashing into a heavier moving car it's a problem. But you have another good point: with a lighter car you can usually brake better, and so you can more easily avoid the crash.

  • hmm, did great, very good
