Detroit's population peaked around 1956 - census estimates had it at 1.97 million that year. The highest recorded census was at just over 1.85 million in 1950. In 1980, Detroit was just under 1.3 million and did not fall below the 1 million mark officially until the 2000 Census.
But the good news is that the city gained 40,000 this year (due to a counting error, but hey, we'll take it!)

The 2 million figure was based on a census, whose numbers are now believed to have been inflated to meet certain benchmarks for federal support.
This is YouTube, not a history book. My goal was to raise the issue and provide some general info about the city.
