people are free to dislike his drumming, but anybody who doesnt like it because its "sloppy" is small minded and doesnt understand the first thing about art, period. technique is means, not end, and art is about expression, not athletics.
@ksdaf he is a great example of how to apply jazz drumming to pop music - he is fucking mind blowing, watching him live is like rubbing your finger on a balloon knowing that at any minute - it will burst
I love his setup. Very creative and hes a drummer that is so good he doesn't need 50 different drums. He keeps it simple with his setup and the hi hat is very unique and now I feel like trying it.
@Mynameisnumber5 Well isn't it a case of "of course f-cking of course", since they're only filming the drummer and the drummers name is mentioned in the name of the video?
@underscoreisnotvalid no its just a large a "remote hi hat" the pedal is on the left as you said , and a series of chains and shit connect the pedal to the actual drum piece which in on the right side of the bass drum, its suppose to have the advantage of opening up your left hand , alot of metal drummers use them so tht they can quickly move about the kit. its not i ride of any kind i dont think, just a very large and low sounding hi hat
I've been lucky enough to see Mr. Saunier (with Deerhoof of course) play live twice. Both occasions were stunning to say the least. He is such an amazing musician and person. I hope to see him play again sometime.
I love the ideas that Greg is coming up with on kit. I do wish his technique was better than it is, but the ideas are awesome. He is a weird mixture as a drummer of someone who is more talented in how he thinks about music, his groove execution, and visual performance, versus his actual stroke.

I love how the kit is practically naked. No fancy toms, no drum pads, no tamorines or any kind of bells and whistles, yet he's just such an absolute powerhouse or energy, and does a great deal with very little.
@bbknux1 you are wrong buddy, it was an observation I made because I saw the rest of the band not moving and the only one who was at odds was Greg. I found that a little bit strange because in a band situation usually everybody is feeling the music and show their like of the music together, not on Deerhoofs' case. But if Greg does have tourettes syndrome then that could explain why that is. Great jazz drummers do many of the amazing stuff Greg does but they do it effortlessly and so smooth
@bbknux1 if you dont know anything about jazz drummers, you obviously dont know what I am talking about...in any case, you are wrong that i stand there motionless...why are you trying to make it a personal issue? are you even a musician? do you even play an instrument? Where is a video of you playing music on youtube? This issue was over long time ago when I found out that Greg has tourettes syndrome which is very unfortunate so drop your ego trip and go back toplay videogames or watever you do
Its cos in this version, they specifically recorded it so the drums could be heard more distinctly so they turned down the volume of everything else so to say..
i hate it when drummers have a go at other drummers for trying to be a bit original with their setups. the world needs more drummers who are trying new things.
I just want to point out to anyone watching this who doesn't listen to deerhoof.. this is mixed deliberately so that his drums are louder than everything else, don't judge the sound of the whole band from this video! They're all incredible musicians and they all deserve videos like this highlighting each of them, the drums are only one fourth of what they've got going on.
It's a pity you can't hear the other instruments well enough to hear exactly how in the pocket his drumming is. I recommend people check out the album, which is a pretty close approximation of this band's awesome live performance.
He doesn't like using a larger kit, because it forces him to be creative with what he's got. He claims that if he uses more drums, it takes away from the sound he wants for songs.
Greg's a really sound guy as well, got the chance to talk to him for a bit after Deerhoof's gig in Galway last weekend, real nice guy. Likes talking to the fans after small gigs like that.
Man! Deerhoof is an amazing band and Greg Saunier is no small part of that. It is a rare occasion to see someone that good at something. I hope I have the chance to see them in concert sometime.
Makes universal language with those drums!! Love this song...Singer has unusual sound, but I am thinking not everyone will develop a taste to like it. She is an awesome bass player and I personally like the voice if it stayed in straightup. Guitars awesome, but the drummer...friggin AWESOME !

What surprised me in this interview w/ Matsuzaki, was her declaration (it seemed implied that she didn't like them) that Nirvana's music was bombastic.
Well bombast in the sense of "high-sounding language with little meaning, used to impress people." One could say Pixies were the real deal and Nirvana were trying to copy that, which Kurt Cobain said himself. So, one could say there were just putting on the affect of alternative. Of course it's a matter of opinion, but it's fair enough to say I think.
When I saw them (In a tiny place called the Crobar in Ybor,FL.) I kept getting hit in the face with shards from his Drumsticks. they were almost destroyed when he was done. Show made me a huge Deerhoof fan.
i bet everyone else in the audience is just standing there with his arm crossed. i like seeing people going nuts at shows. it makes bands feel good.... except if you're fugazi.
That's really amazing what he can do with a two piece drum set and not even having hi-hats, just a ride. I can't tell, but it seems that he has his ride on a hi-hat stand because it looks like it's going up and down and even stopping as if something is closing it together. But I don't see a bottom part of it... odd. If anyone knows what it is, please tell me. It's very interesting.
Greg is a rhythm slinky.

And by "the rest of the band" you mean you see

none of the other members are allowed to do so.
Is that this "illusion" you were speaking of?

does he play solely in the realm of jazz style in Deerhoof?
didn't think so. I am a musician. I just don't feel the need
to post videos on youtube to convince myself that I'm
competent, unlike yourself. I don't know where you found
this nonsense about "Jazz drummers" and proper technique,

i bet everyone else in the audience is just standing there with his arm crossed. i like seeing people going nuts at shows. it makes bands feel good.... except if you're fugazi.

Fugazi liked seeing people dance, not hurt each other.

I've heard, it's 2 K custom 18" crashes.

Oh, cool.
BeatNick13 3 years ago
it's a remote hihat—there's a cable that goes to a foot pedal where it would normally be. so he can play the hats without crossing his arms etc.

Oh I see. That's cool. I was just wondering mostly because he's using a crash cymbal for it.
