  • Greg is a rhythm slinky.

  • still the best video on youtube..,must have seen this at least 100 times!

  • people are free to dislike his drumming, but anybody who doesnt like it because its "sloppy" is small minded and doesnt understand the first thing about art, period. technique is means, not end, and art is about expression, not athletics.

  • @ksdaf he is a great example of how to apply jazz drumming to pop music - he is fucking mind blowing, watching him live is like rubbing your finger on a balloon knowing that at any minute - it will burst

  • Deep pocket is deep. So sloppy, yet so clean... This man is a legend.

  • The dude breaks up time like no body else, that's what makes him truly amazing.

  • I love his setup. Very creative and hes a drummer that is so good he doesn't need 50 different drums. He keeps it simple with his setup and the hi hat is very unique and now I feel like trying it.

  • HEY EVERYBODY WE'RE ALL MUSICIANS AND LIKE/DO NOT LIKE DEERHOOF AND PEOPLE GIVE A SHIT HEYOOOOO

  • @ParadoxVincent lol'd

  • that is just fuckin ridiculously good

  • I love how all the comments on this video are all about the drummer

  • @Mynameisnumber5 Well isn't it a case of "of course f-cking of course", since they're only filming the drummer and the drummers name is mentioned in the name of the video?

  • His back is gunna kill him later on.

  • i love the stick twirl near the end

  • The dude air drumming in the background is what really makes this video for me.

  • SHIT that is minimalist drumming right there. Snare, kick, bigass crash-hat, THAT'S IT. If only we could all learn this way.

  • i love how all the comments on here are all about how good the drummer is.

  • Jim Carrey of drummers

  • wow is that like a ride/hi-hat hybrid on the right which he opens and closes with the left foot?

  • @underscoreisnotvalid no its just a large a "remote hi hat" the pedal is on the left as you said , and a series of chains and shit connect the pedal to the actual drum piece which in on the right side of the bass drum, its suppose to have the advantage of opening up your left hand , alot of metal drummers use them so tht they can quickly move about the kit. its not i ride of any kind i dont think, just a very large and low sounding hi hat

  • hes the moderd day kieth moon...lol!

  • Never mind Greg (who is obviously amazing), what about fucking Michael Deitrich on guitar? He fucking rips!

  • @SendInTheChickens This whole damn band is like a flying saucer juggernaut of supertalent.

  • @floofytown agreed. terrifying.

  • how the fuck...?!

  • I've been lucky enough to see Mr. Saunier (with Deerhoof of course) play live twice. Both occasions were stunning to say the least. He is such an amazing musician and person. I hope to see him play again sometime.

  • el batero estaba pasadisimo de merca! jajaja una masa lata actitud

  • BEN MARTIN ADD ME ON FACEBOOK

  • soooooooooo much better than deerhunter

  • @GGreGgoRy123

    agreed

  • Best drummer since John French...

  • er, listen to gavin harrison..

  • Pretty sloppy if you ask me.

  • @dokaflokajoe

That's sort of the point. It's got that sloppy. loose, jazzy, spazzy "throwing buckets of paint on a wall" feel to it.

  • @dokaflokajoe yeah, cuz hes just having fun with it. rock isnt supposed to be neat and exactly in order.

  • @unANIMATOR to each their own. and i agree....but there's a difference between sloppyness and dynamics. I love to drive cars loosely, but not when the wheels are wobbly and bearings shot. Just like drunken boxing, a blend of precision and loose spontaneous art.

  • dont care how bad the quality is, watching him drum like this is a gift from god

  • I wish the whole song was here. Pretty good recording. Greg amazes me.

  • He is good, but the most of you overrate him.He is fast, but the most drummers can play fast like that(he's playing with french grip that makes it even faster). In a small band like that you must fill the space with your instrument and energy and he make that better than I ever saw in a Guitar&Drum Band. What I really like at his playing is that he can play very quiet at the singing, but he stay in his style and speed. His setup is by the way very creative. He use the less things very god.

  • I think it's funny that people criticize Saunier for his movement, as though showmanship was somehow a new idea to them. Go search out videos of Papa Jo Jones and ask yourself if all the schtick he does is "necessary" or whether, wait, maybe it's just really entertaining and fun.

  • kinda like Jucifer in the way that the drummer sits too low, trys too hard and FUCKING ROCKS MUCH ASS. nice to see.

  • i think its absurd to try and compare a drummer like greg saunier to a great jazz drummer like billy cobham, buddy rich, brian blade, jack dejohnette, etc. The great part about musicianship is that there isn't a golden standard that drummers/pianists/singers must accomplish. The reason we love Thelonious Monk isn't because he could display the virtuosity of art tatum, but because he soared through his unique voice and perfected that. Greg ain't perfect, but he's pretty good in his own style.

  • @smarmymob Im pretty sure Buddy Rich would be able to figure out what to do derp!! ! douche

  • what song is this?

  • @hoginthesky

Notice how the title of the video is Milk Man.

  • why are u so amazing jw

  • he drums fast!!!!!

  • Your not a true drummer until you're Greg Saunier! XD

I love how the kit is practically naked. No fancy toms, no drum pads, no tamorines or any kind of bells and whistles, yet he's just such an absolute powerhouse or energy, and does a great deal with very little.

  • Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, etc etc et.

All better drummers than this clown.

  • @Daruka2011 I'd like to see 'em behind a set like Greg's. they couldn't do shit with it.

  • @Daruka2011 okay

  • @Daruka2011 Thats sucks that that's your opinion.

  • Definitely one of the greatest drummers (if not the greatest) working in rock music today.

  • i like how he occasionally flips his sticks. its funny.

  • "One does not need to move one's head like that to drum that way...why does he exaggerate? Its just an illusion he creates"

Haha, what the fuck are you talking about you complete idiot?

  • One does not need to move one's head like that to drum that way...why does he exaggerate? Its just an illusion he creates

  • @theguitarrist It's called "getting into the music and having fun"

  • @theguitarrist He has tourettes syndrome, part of the reason he twitches so much

  • @WinterTroll ok that explains a lot

  • @theguitarrist you criticize him for having enthusiasm for the music

and his playing? I suppose as a guitarist, you just stand there motionless

and strum your guitar because doing anything else would just be creating

    an illusion...

  • @bbknux1 you are wrong buddy, it was an observation I made because I saw the rest of the band not moving and the only one who was at odds was Greg. I found that a little bit strange because in a band situation usually everybody is feeling the music and show their like of the music together, not on Deerhoofs' case. But if Greg does have tourettes syndrome then that could explain why that is. Great jazz drummers do many of the amazing stuff Greg does but they do it effortlessly and so smooth

  • @theguitarrist exactly what am I wrong about?

And by "the rest of the band" you mean you see

one other member. So, by your logic, if one member

of a band isn't moving and enthusiastically playing

none of the other members are allowed to do so.

Is that this "illusion" you were speaking of?

  • @bbknux1 if you dont know anything about jazz drummers, you obviously dont know what I am talking about...in any case, you are wrong that i stand there motionless...why are you trying to make it a personal issue? are you even a musician? do you even play an instrument? Where is a video of you playing music on youtube? This issue was over long time ago when I found out that Greg has tourettes syndrome which is very unfortunate so drop your ego trip and go back toplay videogames or watever you do

  • @theguitarrist you continue to bring up Jazz musicians.

Has Greg ever called himself a "jazz drummer" ?

does he play solely in the realm of jazz style in Deerhoof?

didn't think so. I am a musician. I just don't feel the need

to post videos on youtube to convince myself that I'm

competent, unlike yourself. I don't know where you found

this nonsense about "Jazz drummers" and proper technique,

but Greg's musicality is spot on whether he's behaving wildly

    behind the set or not.

  • @bbknux1 sure buddy, you truly deserve a pat on the back...I got to get back to playing music now lad...thanks for the nonsense

  • i think greg is the best drummer ever

  • @lilromeowifey1 no, i think, i am the best drummer ever!

  • @lilromeowifey1 I would disagree. There is no "best drummer ever".

  • @lilromeowifey1 probably one of the best recent drummers, theyre a lot of other ppl who is better than he is, which is hard to believe

  • The guys in the background are SO out of it lol

  • i just came

  • "gimme a random drum kit with as few drums as possible and i'll scare the crap out of them"

  • why is it that the album drums on this not compare to the epicness of the live drums.

  • Its cos in this version, they specifically recorded it so the drums could be heard more distinctly so they turned down the volume of everything else so to say..

  • the guy guy in the back loves his little drum along lol

  • I LOVE HIS PATENTED RIDE HI-HAT

  • haha same due i think iv seen it some were else tho..i want one

  • Another great aspect of Greg Saunier that makes him one of the best drummers today is how much of a minimalist he is...

  • anyone be able to tell me what snare he uses

  • Holy fucking shit, I never realised how good the drummer is.

  • I love how he flips the right stick at 2:05 and just destroys with a backwards drumstick for 30 seconds. Super badass.

  • THIS BAND IS FUCKIN AWESOME

  • what tripped me out, when i saw them live, was how little his drum set up was and how much he rocked out. fucking brilliant.

  • Jimi Hendrix of the dums, i bow down to you sir grer. You are without question the best drummer evr in fucking history.

  • Raw as fuck. Nice beats, sir.

  • i hate it when drummers have a go at other drummers for trying to be a bit original with their setups. the world needs more drummers who are trying new things.

  • I love the guy in the background trying to be the drummer...wait, no I hate that

  • His drumming contrasts her simplistic and soft vocals.

I hope they come around my way.

  • That's a genius setup D:

  • I just want to point out to anyone watching this who doesn't listen to deerhoof.. this is mixed deliberately so that his drums are louder than everything else, don't judge the sound of the whole band from this video! They're all incredible musicians and they all deserve videos like this highlighting each of them, the drums are only one fourth of what they've got going on.

  • no , the drums are the best part.

  • Is that a farking hi-hat??? B\

  • It's gotta be a low hat then hehe

  • This is the craziest thing and its great!

  • check out that stick flip at 2:04

  • It's a pity you can't hear the other instruments well enough to hear exactly how in the pocket his drumming is. I recommend people check out the album, which is a pretty close approximation of this band's awesome live performance.

  • if this is what he's like with just a snare, bass and hai-hat, imagine what he'd be like with a full kit. or a super kit like neil peart's!

  • He doesn't like using a larger kit, because it forces him to be creative with what he's got. He claims that if he uses more drums, it takes away from the sound he wants for songs.

  • soooo... he's a minimalist?

  • I guess you could call him that. Nothing wrong with being creative with such a small set.

  • no there is not

  • hes actually rly good on a full kit. there are a few vids of him playing about on a 4 piece.

  • Best living indie rock drummer bar none.

  • That is so gross.

  • i'm going to see them in new london sept. 12

  • Fuckin crazy awesome!! =D ^__^

  • look at that poor guy wishing he knew how to drum in the background.

  • he's at a deerhoof concert. he was most likely stoned out of his MIND.

  • Insane atmosphere

  • I love this. I watched it like 20 times

  • Greg and Zach Hill are my fav's

  • Yeah, those two are among my tops!!!

  • Greg's a really sound guy as well, got the chance to talk to him for a bit after Deerhoof's gig in Galway last weekend, real nice guy. Likes talking to the fans after small gigs like that.

  • goin ta see them this weekend RAWRGH!

  • that poor snare :'[ haha

  • GOOD LORD

  • Man! Deerhoof is an amazing band and Greg Saunier is no small part of that. It is a rare occasion to see someone that good at something. I hope I have the chance to see them in concert sometime.

  • greg is thee best drummer aside from legends like neil peart and john bonham

my drum set has 1 more drum than his

    hes the ultimate role model

  • @unANIMATOR If all you enjoy hearing is old classic rock and old prog rock then yeah...their good.

  • Greg is the new Keith Moon

  • ...with 1/3 of the drum set! :D

  • ....he's my favorite drummer EVER. he is so AMAZING! he needs to be like above neil pert and alike

  • Excelent.

  • What's a beast!

  • These guys, kinda remind me of Primus in some ways. I'd say this is some nice ole-fashionned anti-pop.

  • ehh

they remind me of a more complex version of blonde redhead

  • This is pure jazz!!

  • WHOA

Did anyone notice how at 2:05 he flips his right drumstick over for the heavy part of the song, and then flips it back over at 2:36 ?

    Fuckin' slick, man.....

  • Without even skipping a beat....

  • Makes universal language with those drums!! Love this song...Singer has unusual sound, but I am thinking not everyone will develop a taste to like it. She is an awesome bass player and I personally like the voice if it stayed in straightup. Guitars awesome, but the drummer...friggin AWESOME !

  • greg saunier is like ....DRUM......

  • Ive watched this four times today

  • oh. my. god. this guy is fantastic!!!

  • it's that a ride and a hi-hat in one? is that possible? ... does that have a name?

  • Ride-hat?

    I have no idea, actually.

  • Yeah, it looks like two ride cymbals used with an X-hat. That is probably the best idea I've seen in a long time.

  • At present, it's a 20" ride over a 18" crash/ride I believe.

  • I liked The Man, the King, the Girl and Apple O', but the rest of their catalogue pretty much leaves me flat.

  • what about friend oppertunity

  • The last one I heard was The Runners Four, most of which they played live the last time I saw them.

  • I forgot the name of the female vocalist-- at any rate, she was asked in an interview if she liked Nirvana. She said "no, they're sound is bombastic". Everyone is entitled, but I thought that odd coming from a band, which is, in some parts, noise rock. I like them, regardless

  • Bombastic as in pretentious? i really don't see how Nirvana was pretentious at all. I want to see that interview cause that just doesn't seem right.

  • I hear that. I'll make a best effort to locate the article.

  • Well, Nirvana admitted a great debt to late 80s alternative groups like the Pixies, and I wouldn't be surprised if the people in Deerhoof liked the Pixies too.

  • right. Like the Veltvet Underground: "Only a handful of people [initially] bought our albums. Those that did buy our albums went off to form a band." I think the Pixies were like that. What surprised me in this interview w/ Matsuzaki, was her declaration (it seemed implied that she didn't like them) that Nirvana's music was bombastic.

  • Well bombast in the sense of "high-sounding language with little meaning, used to impress people." One could say Pixies were the real deal and Nirvana were trying to copy that, which Kurt Cobain said himself. So, one could say there were just putting on the affect of alternative. Of course it's a matter of opinion, but it's fair enough to say I think.

  • I was sure I wasn't the only one who thought Pixies when it started playing.

  • Fucking incredible band. So glad they exist.

  • wow he gets a lot of sound out of that small kit

  • Greg Saunier is a BEAST live.

    Deerhoof is Best live.

When I saw them (In a tiny place called the Crobar in Ybor,FL.) I kept getting hit in the face with shards from his Drumsticks. they were almost destroyed when he was done. Show made me a huge Deerhoof fan.

Just wish they had a live album...

  • they do. sort of. its called "bibbidy babiddy boo" or something. its awesome. peace.

  • lol at the guy in the background.

  • he's feelin it

  • i bet everyone else in the audience is just standing there with his arm crossed. i like seeing people going nuts at shows. it makes bands feel good.... except if you're fugazi.

  • Fugazi liked seeing people dance, not hurt each other.

  • Apparently you haven't seen that famous video of Waiting Room.

  • My inferences

    The drummer? drd47r

    The singer? drd42r

    90% of humanity?drd4 4r

    Me?

    I think 4's are boring.

  • Now that is some tasty drumming. Fine, fine stuff!

  • That's really amazing what he can do with a two piece drum set and not even having hi-hats, just a ride. I can't tell, but it seems that he has his ride on a hi-hat stand because it looks like it's going up and down and even stopping as if something is closing it together. But I don't see a bottom part of it... odd. If anyone knows what it is, please tell me. It's very interesting.

  • I've heard, it's 2 K custom 18" crashes.

  • Oh, cool.

  • it's a remote hihat—there's a cable that goes to a foot pedal where it would normally be. so he can play the hats without crossing his arms etc.

  • Oh I see. That's cool. I was just wondering mostly because he's using a crash cymbal for it.

  • ha ok. i wasn't sure and i didn't read the old comments...

  • why do you have a kitten foe a singer??
