FYI: You can rehydrate ramen noodles in the field without boiling water in a pinch. Just let it soak for 15-20 minutes or until soft. Also check out your local Asian grocery for instant noodle brands with bolder, more complex flavors. You can also find dried fish and fruits there, gourmet rice, and canned foods you can't get at the grocery store!
I'm a big fan of bulk rolled oats. $10-12 for 25lbs. You dont have to cook it or add hot water. You can eat it uncooked and dry or add cold or hot water. When I think survival I think of the long term instead of 48 hours. Your bugout food should be some of the same food that you plan to eat during your 3-10 year survival. Most people cant afford to buy 10 years worth of MREs. A month worth would break my bank. :)
The thing with MREs. Sure they taste horrible when you are at home and have REAL food available to you. BUT --- if you've ever NEEDED a meal.... you will eat the whole thing and lick the wrapper. When my wife and I were youngsters and broke we once split a can of Dinty Moore Stew and 17 years later we still talk about it like it was the best meal we've ever had.
PS --- I just recently found your channel and I am really impressed thank you for putting together some really great info.
@1775Montezuma When stationed in Korea my wife and I once lived off rice and soy sauce for a week, before getting supplied by a church on-post with Thanksgiving supplies. We took a picture before we ate it, and have that picture to this day.
@wormer104: Most likely not. If you recall, in the video we said we were uncertain whether heating it up (in a MRE Heating Bag) would work -- we tried it anyway, and this was the result. We only purchased one cobbler online for testing, so we were unable to verify otherwise. You might want to try it out for yourself. Many blessings --GM
I'm convinced you put in the "taste tests" just to torture a poor civilian woman XD. There is not an active-duty soldier or survivalist to be found that won't agree with me: MRE food is GREAT! Can't get enough of the stuff. Your average civvies just don't have very good taste, that's all. Most people on the street still consider MSG a condiment :P
Thanks so much for the series. You've inspired me to expand on your research for our needs. I've forwarded your site to a number of friends. You're right, too many related videos overfocus on firearms. Hygene, food & health will cause lots to sign up for fema!
My experience confirms that MREs don't taste good (sides or entrees). I have some anyway, because taste isn't the most important criteria when it comes to BO food. Thanks for another well organized video analysis of options.
LOL! You're wife obviously wasn't hungry when she did these taste tests. I bet if you took her on a 6 mile hike over uneven terrain then repeated the taste test, you'd get different results.

you can also heat the MRE's up next to a fire (just knead and turn often) or dunk it in a boiling water cup

LOL! Thanks for the heads up on the MRE cobbler and stuffing--great taste test segment! (I think Stove Top wins it hands down anyway!)

Okay correct me if I'm wrong but is the cobbler supposed to look like soup?

Thank you. I'll try that. Might be me but most desserts shouldn't resemble what they look like half-digested.

Your wife wants to feed the cornbread stuffing to prisoners...LOL! Would that be considered torture? Or just "enhanced feeding"?

Great series.
Stovetop makes an instant-ish stuffing in cups that woulds probably be MUCH better.
Smores make a great dessert with products that last a long time.
