  • What a great tune, this original is my personal fav version from the Velvet Underground. thanks for posting! Happy New Year 2012 -- cheers!

  • This sounds like John Lennon singing, if John Lennon couldn't sing.

  • @JonFrumTheFirst

    lennon could sing?

  • @preponement Hahaha! Hey everyone, look! This guy really can dish it out! Wow, what a good one.

    Just kidding.

  • they really make depressing sound good don;t they?

  • Bad vibes on those comments .

  • I love the harmonies when Doug Yule sings the "Candy Says" bit! This song is perhaps one of my favourite VU songs!

  • Great song, but the picture is wrong? neither Nico nor John Cale were in the Velvets at this stage.

  • Thanks WaldoJeffers25 for uploading this ethereal classic. Just a couple things: the photograph accompanying this upload is historically inaccurate, since Nico and John Cale were not members of the Velvets when this opening track of the third album was recorded. Second, the song in the Valentin mix you have here is actually 4:04 long, not 4:00, so we lose the crucial ending of the song (ouch). But thanks for getting this out there.

  • Grande Lou..

  • I just realized, Good Feeling by Violent Femmes sounds a lot like this song...

  • this song brings back memories

  • Candy said 15

  • My friend told me that the first time he ever listened to this song he cried so i listened to it. Blew my mind

  • CANDYS SO HOT

  • @DaArbiter well, she was a transvestite. ;) :P

  • @epsiloncaste it just adds to her hotness

  • When is youtube going to implement a repeat button?

  • its all fun and games until your smile has no teeth left

  • Blind Melon does an awesome cover. They make it sound alot more happier. :)

  • i like the part where candy says stuff

  • @zipzopzupitywop Bullshit, you love thinking you're unique, why else would you post such a pointless, attention whoring comment?

I bet there are lots of kids that like this music, but they actually listen to it instead of turning their music tastes into some kind of 'statement'.

  • @zipzopzupitywop I LIVE IN CALI ITS PRETTY EASY TO FIND PEOPLE THAT LIKE THIS MUSIC.....FYI...IM 18 MALE

  • when I hear this song I thought at the time when he was a baby, but why? Someone answer me ...

  • doug yule sounds amazing on the vocals

  • candy deserves a million songs.

  • @MsIfuckinghateyou EXACTLY

  • Very mellow and laid back song! ;) Thanks for sending this to me Rain

  • Very mellow and laid back song! ;) Thanks for sending this

    to me Rain.

  • Questa canzone mi ricorda il mio ultimo giorno del mio viaggio in lituania, lettonia, estonia e finlandia! SPETTACOLARE!

  • @askalice123 What are you talking about? Everything before 3:04 is beautiful... if somebody doesn't like that, then maybe they don't deserve to listen to The Velvet Underground.

  • If someone was sleeping and you put headphones up to their ears and played this, they'd have the biggest wet dream ever

  • 8 people realized that this song was about trannies

  • soooooo soulful ... it don't matter what the subject is or when it was sung or what the good/bad/ugly sideshows occurred then and now. what is fabulous in this song is the spirit conveyed and how a fellow human being was able to reach out to bring back for the rest of us to love and listen to.

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH so its abt a trannie.fuck theres a girl at work and her name is candy and shes hot and i was gonna tell her about this song but naah nevermind ill tell her abt the band

  • voice is from Doug Yule, not Lou...

  • A song that feels like you are right in the room with them as they are playing and singing it. Intimate and melancholly and yet a not altogether sad song. Merci!

  • i think im gonna change my name to Candy.

  • I relate to this song far too much :[

  • just a heads up for some........ stuborn folks here, it's ok to like different versions of the same tune. Lou Reed isn't gonna get mad. I promise. I can see if Lady Gaga covered it but Melon is an awesome rock and roll band. and lets not forget Hoon (their singer) had quite a taste for the opiate derivitives himself. anyway, open up. its not a war, it's music

  • @ragweedpollens

I actually think Lady Gaga covering this would be very entertaining, in a good way, not being sarcastic.

  • @ragweedpollens love the melon version thought it was there song wen i first heard it not being to familiet with these guyss... lol but gagga doin this wod be kina cool if she did it in a good way like acoustic not her electric crap for all her kiddie fansss...

  • This version reigns supreme, but a close second would be Antony & the Johnsons' version of it.

  • I supose they were still quite young when they created this, but it sounds like very mature song.

  • I dont think they ever wanted to be huge.

  • I wish ppl would stop making all kind of silly comparisons, wether it is with the beatles of radiohead or whatever. This is the Velvet Underground, I grew up with this music and to me it is just a great song, like so many others they made.

  • RIP Jimmy

  • This is very Beatles-esque, and that's a good thing, because both The Beatles and The Velvet Underground kick ass. Too bad Velvet Underground is more...well, "underground" and not as popular as The Beatles, because honestly, both bands are on par with each other.

  • this is a wonderful song from a wonderful album and equally wonderful group.. but all this comparisons with radiohead is abit, sorry to say, stupid.. its pretty clear u guys dont have a clue what radiohead are about..

  • I am uploading my cover right now.

  • Check out Blind Melons cover of the tune. watch?v=fOCqceClymw

  • so beautiful and so many memories....i'am ganna watch blue birds fly.....

  • those guitars make my ears tickle when i have headphones on, lovely song

  • Who's the girl?

  • @maddiec23 Nico.

  • Is Doug Yule even on this picture? no.

  • @FillMoreGan Doug Yule is not on this picture

  • @rainspirit100 That's the band in 1966 or 1967.

  • @ChelseyM9191 There is nothing new on the face of this earth, everyone is impacted by something

  • @ChelseyM9191

Yeah, Kid A sounds exactly like this.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne dont be a dumbass

  • @zeipiero

I could say the very same to you, my friend.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne KID A? look.. i can accept maybe two or three of the hundreds of radiohead songs, but not KID A man.. if its thoms singing ur talking about then MAYBE i can understand but the music no man not a chance! if you dont mind, can u tell me how on earth kid A sounds like this?

  • @zeipiero

You realized I was kidding, bro, right?

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne right... HEHEH.. well.. no i didn't realize.. well thats good then haha.. but someone gotta tell that damn chelsey man.. i dont even think he knows u were being sarcastic!

  • @zeipiero

Yeah, he seems like a douche. Although you can't really judge peoples' personalities by a snobby YouTube comment or two....

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne ,@ShineOfTheMightyOne , @zeipiero , and whoever else keeps replying. My family uses the same computer and my dad frequently comes onto youtube while I'm still logged on, so that was all him. Yes he's a cynical, opinionated bastard whom I love, get over it. so stop replying because it's never getting back to him. Im tired of seeing notifications for this video. aaand i'm deleting the comment he made. Satisfied?

  • @ChelseyM9191

    Teheh, yes, yes, of course.

  • Anyone already mentioned that it sounds like scissors are used on the hi-hatbeat ?

  • @CarlosCasanostra

    Guess you're right

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne NOTHING sounds like this. Kid A , And the Velvets are both on a different level of musical consciousness .

  • @jesuscat29

    *SMACK*

    No.

    NO.

    Well, yes.

But no, that's not what I meant. For the fourth time now, that comment was SARCASTIC.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne Lol ADMIT IT You where serious.

  • @jesuscat29

The original comment was about Radiohead ripping off the VU, and so shit inevitably had to go down.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne pffft take more smack before you talk about your wild years

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne no it doesn't you fucking moron, i'm hoping your comment is in seclusion of the fact because you're a moron if not... a beautiful track..

  • @ihatemyjobman

OH MY FUCKING SON OF A HELL

THIS IS THE FIFTH GOD DAMN BITCH OF A FUCKING TIME

I was being SARCASTIC. The comment I was replying to said something along the lines of, 'Radiohead took all their hints from the Velvet Underground.'

Which isn't true. Radiohead took all their hints from Can, who took most of their hints from the VU.

    But nonetheless.

    SARCASM.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne sorry buddy

  • @ihatemyjobman

    's alright.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne Can is awesome, so is VU. Good comment

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne Who's Can?

  • @warrensmitchell

Heheh, this is one of two consecutive replies I've gotten asking me 'who' Can is....

They were this crazy German avant-garde group from the '70s whose music was stuck somewhere in between Funkadelic and Stockhausen. Look 'em up, if you like the VU or Radiohead or really any kinda sterile funk-type music, they should be right up your alley.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne I don't really think Can, which is krautrock, has much to do with the VU, though I do think people who likes VU might enjoy Can. But VU is a "songs" band, while Can is more like a "30 minutes long improvisations" band. I'm quite sure Can did influence Radiohead, too.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne SO, what you are saying is that Radiohead (never heard of them except on youtube) are as original Mylie or Justin B or lady gag gag? Because those two are epicly original...

  • @GrigoriZhukov

I was sort of joking, but Radiohead isn't exactly the most innovative band on the planet. They make some pretty great music, not gonna lie, but the genius of it isn't how original it is...it's how they can take all their influences and get one big, great end product from them.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne I'll buy that for a dollar. Sometimes it's better to make a song your own that come up with something new. 8^)

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne Exactly. Kid A isn't ''diifficult'' or ''groundbreaking'' but a perfect blend of many genres.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne

    Nonetheless, bollocks.

To suggest that Radiohead "took all their hints from Can" is (a) just untrue and (b) the kind of comment that shit-headed musos normally spout out to make themselves sound informed. Not that I'm implying that of course.

  • @zacneeds

Can't deny that Can had a considerable influence on Radiohead, tho.

  • @zacneeds

And come to think of it, Boredoms are probably closer to a modern day Can than Radiohead.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne

This is why I have been petitioning the all powerfuls for a sarcasm font.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne

Radiohead (and mostly Thom Yorke) listened to Can, and even made a cover of one of their songs (the thief), but if you are a real Radiohead fan, you will see that they didnt take "all their hints" from Can or VU, they were deeply inspired by IDM artists such as Aphex Twin and Boards Of Canada, Kautrock, and many many other inspirations, but still they have their own characteristic sound, the sound of Radiohead. In fact, I dont see much influence from Can or VU on Radiohead

  • @ChelseyM9191 that would be delusional

  • @ChelseyM9191 OH shut up, every band needs a start, the velvets aren't all original to.

  • @ShineOnCrazyDiamond1 oops you were meant to be tagged in the previous statement I just made. sooo refer to the comment before this one for my reply.

  • @ChelseyM9191 Tell your dad he's ignorant. And stupid :)

  • MMHHM

  • for YEARS I thought Lou sang the tracks on SQUEEZE. This is my favorite VU song besides "friends". You're right. Yule's songs are the tops.

  • @useifnot i prefer the monotone of Lou's voice

  • duuu duuu wahhhhhhhhhh

  • exquisite...ty

  • Most people doesn´t know that it isn´t reed singing this one.

  • @1710libra

Yeah, same with "Oh Sweet Nuthin."

  • As much as I love originals, I have to say I love Secret Square's cover a lot more.

  • Gorgeous.

  • It's amazing how these groups influence each other. I can hear Blondie, Garbage and the Fleetwoods here.

  • My favourite VU album is this one.

  • she was probably shootin pics in new york or something. different album.

  • When me and other friends of mine decided to quit the "wild life" of our 18-20 period and to calm the fuck down a bit, we passed an evening remembering all the funny and sad things alike that had happened in those 2 years, with this album playing on. It was a beautiful moment that marked a turning point for us, it felt as if something important had just ended, yet if felt so absolutely good. And the album was a perfect fit, I should say

  • @ZioStronzo Sounds like a bad ass moment

  • @ZioStronzo

Yes you're right. After you've heard Lou, everything is fine.. put in the right place.

    Take care

  • @ZioStronzo that's really cool man.

  • @ZioStronzo i like that.

  • @ZioStronzo you're an idiot, i'm sorry...'i should say'

  • LOVEEEE THIS SONG!!!

  • Fucken Hell! This is my soNG! Love this! Special mention to the Blind Melon and Garbage versions xo

  • i dont understand what does nico do exactly

  • @jesfeuryty

Nico was a guest singer who sang on their first album The Velvet Underground & Nico. After the first album they kicked her out.

The pic in the video is inaccurate because Nico and John Cale were out of the band by the time of the 3rd album and Doug Yule was in the band.

  • Check out Blind Melon's version of this song everyone.

  • Waldo, thanku for all your dedication and hard work to introduce this fine music to another generation, its appreciated :)

  • amazing amazing! Lou, the Velvet U, and the story depicted in 4 minutes, Candy Says, is more visual and hardhitting than most full-length movies i've seen lately. to think i can only listen to 1-2 VU songs on most classic rock stations these days. terrible state of musical art in some sectors ... i'm heartened that on my streamin radio station on the internet, i see lotsa young kids puttin them on as their emerging favorites :)

  • what do you think I'd see, if I could walk away from me.......?

  • Se ha añadido a mi lista de canciones favoritas.

  • One of the smartest decisions Lou made was delegating lead vocals on this one to Doug Yule.

  • Hi there, old friend! How've you been?

  • è sempre un piacere ascoltare bella musica...

  • thumbs UP

  • Sm0Oo0oth

    yesss

  • I wonder if pink floyd listened to this album. The songs on Atom Heart Mother and Obscured by Clouds sound similar to this.

  • @BeatleFloydZeppelin Um, what songs exactly?

  • @CosmosOfBeauty lots of them. 'If' off of Atom Heart and 'Wots... Uh the deal?" off of Obsured by Clouds sounds like this.

  • @BeatleFloydZeppelin I could bet you my life that not only did they listen to The Velvet Underground but they worshipped them, the VU is one of the most influential bands of all time

  • @BeatleFloydZeppelin was shit after the first album which incidentally shits all of this stuff

  • out of sight-sheer beauty!!!!!

  • omfg this is so smooooothhhh

  • candy darling, love

  • the blond woman sitting is nico who didnt actually do anything in terms of music

    contribution.-weird

  • if you ppl like this song you should hear Beth Gibbons version (Portishead vocalist)

  • Doug Yule has a nice voice

  • @Abumafo0 I agree. Most people doesn´t know, that it´s not Lou singing this one.

  • The velvet underground.. is god

  • Cannot begin to explain how much I can relate to those two verses.

  • @AbbyLouiseCooper I can't either. I can also relate to the chorus. God, great song.

  • this so sounds so pleasant when you're faded =]

  • La mejor banda de todo el mundo

  • I wonder what Clinic were listening to when they record Distortions..

  • Maureen Tucker was not...uh...very attractive.

  • @pbrick6301 Or talented.

  • @pbrick6301 I disagree.

  • doug yule- lead vocals

  • Is it just me or does he sound like John Lennon in the first two lines?

    From 0:00 to 0:13.

  • @bumpistheman A little bit.

  • Respond to this video... i disagree that they r underated

  • Beautiful.. Music, lyrics just everything...

  • The most underrated group of the 1960s.

  • @tjpell68 probably most underrated band of all time.

  • @tjpell68 How are they underrated? Everyone thinks they're great.

  • @ArtSpeech Maybe every friend friend of yours, but most people don't even know about this band.

  • @evanescent25 Most people Do know about this band. Stop underestimate VU's impact on modern music just so you can believe that you're a part of a nostalgic minority.

  • @tyvegutt fag

  • @tyvegutt A lot of people know about Velvet Underground but most people don't.Stop underestimate main-streem knowledge about the history of rock.I don't underestimate VU's impact on modern music,I know they are one of the most influential bands.

  • @tjpell68 thats why theyre velvet UNDERGROUND
