My friend Ed Thigpen---I got to see him a few years ago with ''The whole Drum truth'' GREAT show,Tootie Heath,Ben Riley, and Jackie Williams----4 drummers!! I got them all to sign a drumhead!!
Billy was not widely known in terms of big commercial success or recognition outside the Jazz and academic world....which just goes to show what a mediocracy we live in.
Oh, well - some of us can enjoy and appreciate while we're around.
PS: That host could brighten up a room....just by leaving it.
Dr T is Great terrific lh and independence his improv 3 is a head arrangement on sweet georgia brown kudos to JVG for all his great uploads have learned alot
@mr patricius 2.you are really stupid.sorry.of course oscar peterson is a giant.but this is not athletics.it's music.there is no first ,second ,third ....place.it's a sistem of really great artists who build a sistem, each bringigng his own thing.anyway taylor is ,no doubt,a father of moden ways to express in jazz.phrasing,etc.so...advice.don't listen to jazz anymore.too much 4 you.
Yes! Another thing they have in common is that they both have sounds that are extremely different from anything else. They're not the only ones, but you can ammediately here from their sounds: that's Lennie! That's Billy!
He sounds influenced by Lennie Tristano. He also had an amzing lefthand. Check out "Scene and variations" from The New Tristano, On the third part he plays solo lefthand great.
I miss you Billy! R.I.P

As a drummer trying to learn jazz bass, listing to Billy's left hand is really instructive.

Lennie Tristano did the contrapuntal thing ina similar way, playing melodies in both right and left hands.
