  • Cool, do you have the rest of the vid? I had it on VHS and watched it loads - a great tour.

Loving Phil's Christmas set-up, be great to share a cheeky sherry with him.

  • Great. Isn't that Antoine de Caunes though?

  • oooh ahhh oooh ahhh oooh ahhh... aching buttocks aching thighs unseen crowds unseen skies between the shoulders lakes of fire stinging eyes on the spinning tyre calves and heart will explode grip the handles eat the road kilo meters whirring chains from Revel to Ax 3 Domaines the body's racked the body begs pressing down on un-stretched legs far beyond un-melted snow want to stop but miles to go... oooh ahhh oooh ahhh oooh ahhh...
  • Ey, nice upload! PM me with your emai and i will send the intro to you! (spam free ofcourse)

    Regards, an fanatic cyclist

  • Phil Liggett = Legend

This video is too much! The sacred theme tune. A relatively youthful Phil. His jumper. His tears on the Champs Elysees. But perhaps best of all, him literally closing the book on the previous smallest win margin.

  • le tour de france 1989 review entitled eight seconds in july.

  • Fantastic music, Phil (the legend) Liggett. Shame about his no dad jumper but would love to see the rest of the story.

  • have u got the rest of it?

  • wow, thanks for posting that intro music, brings back some amazing 14 year old tour obsession memories back! and Phil Liggett is a legend..

  • lol same here i was like 14 15.used to sly my dads old racer out .was way to big for me.and sing this song in my head over and over.amazing song road cycling is in my blood.

  • I used to video this show everyday when I was 16/17 then crank it and go out and clean the old bike and imagine I was in the tour-Greatest memories ever-AND I tottally want this tune!! MP3????

  • Best theme tune since Airwolf and The Littlest Hobo.

  • It's Alan Partridge on 'Knowing Me Knowing Yule'. How can you cry over a bicycle race?! um I think Phil needs to get out more lol

  • Sport and indeed most things has the power to do that to people. In addition, 1989 was a highly emotionally charged year with the Hillsborough incident affecting Sports fans and Broadcasters in the UK deeply.

Sometimes things can't be explained. A person or an event, no matter how big or small can make an indelible impact upon your life that makes you perform one act that more and more people are insistent upon hiding, that act? Emotion. Love live it.

  • lighten up Steven ffs!

  • does anyone have an mp3 of this theme tune so i can have it has a ring tone.

  • Haha, yeah for sure.

  • that brings back memories!

  • would be good to see the rest of the program if you still have it?

  • I reckon he was crying because his wife found out about his afair with his microphone.

  • Great music. The style of the intro looks horribly dated today, which is a shame because it was a really good prog

  • fkk me. i'm getting old, but Partridge did come after this didn't he?

  • LOVE THE MUSIC

  • incredible post. mr liggett looking very alan partridge. shame they changed the theme. this was one of the best. not as scandelous when they 'updated' the snooker theme tho... arrgh!

  • "Alan Partridge" lmao!

and yes, it was a great piece of music - better than anything Mozart ever did and if you ask me he was rubbish anyway.

  • @phezza

right there on both counts! the theme for this is timeless just like the snooker theme. bbc know they wouldn't get away with pissing around with the motd theme and it should have been the same for those two an' all

  • hella sweatshirt!

  • Phil Liggett is a legend!!

  • wow that music makes me emotional.. reminds me of summers long ago. half past 6 every night on channel 4 watching robert millar.

    legendary theme tune.

  • It's a little unfair of him to call Delgado a "brilliant intruder" . . . after all, a fair case can be made that he was stronger than either Lemond or Fignon, and would have won handily had he not idiotically lost almost ten minutes by the end of the team time trial.

  • Everyone loves tha musicccc :D Myself included!

  • Weird set. "Oh, hi there! I was just enjoying a little Christmas sherry and didn't see you pop in!"

  • Holy God...I haven't heard this music in some long

  • Brilliant , thanks been looking for this :) What a tune!

  • I have managed to track down the single and it is NOT the version played here. It was taken form the release but it has been remixed.

  • anyone else having trouble watching this vid or others?

you tube sucks it used to work fine

  • apparently its done by pete shelley from the buzzcocks. its the b-side of his single `never again`. i can't find it myself, but apparently thats where its at.

  • I'm afraid it's not.

Picked up the 12" and definitely not this tune!

  • Brilliant. One of the great title sequences of all time. For years I thought it was a guy standing up holding a set of handlebars above his head.

    Thanks for adding this.

  • The definitive Tour theme music. ITV need to bring it back. Any idea if there's a full version of it anywhere?

  • Cant agree more
