Amanda's misgivings are totally understandable. Remember, we're blessed w/ hindsight. We know that Carl has totally reformed & know what's coming. Amanda & Rachel do not. If our real life mothers were in a similar situation, taking aid from a man who had tried to kill her, we'd react similarly. Not only that, but you can definitely see that Rachel's guard was coming down w/ Carl, even if she couldn't see that herself. That would definitely have frightened any of us if we were her child.
