In 1992 President Bush called for the production of chlorofluorocarbons CFC's (such as well known refrigerants called Freons and the fire extinguisher gasses known as halons) to be halted (the Montreal-London Protocol) in 1995. Scientists believed that CFC's were causing the hole.
@MsTvxqforever We have lots of problems but I don't believe the end is near. The world did mostly correct the ozone depletion problem with the Montreal agreement on CFCs.
Lightning can be responsible for as much as 90 percent of the nitrogen oxides in the summer and at the same time increase ozone levels as much as 30 percent in the free troposphere, the area that extends 3-8 miles above the Earth’s surface.
... so, thank goodness we destroy some ozone, or we'd all die of ozone poisoning!
most scientists are poor university students, looking for an angle to secure research funding.
Two things get to me about all this "climate blame." One, why are we (USA) solely to blame for climate problems-last I checked Mother Nature wasn't renting a flat in Central Park West.
Two, this carbon tax-another scheme to defraud helpless taxpayers and pad Al Gore's bank account.
the antartic is 10,000 ft above sea level and the coldest place in the world the hole in the ozone layer ( if it exists ) is a natural thing , when freon was banned a lot of money was made by vested interests..the whole thing stinks to high heaven just like global ( carbon tax ) warming
Isn't it better to try and stop potentially destructive chemicals from ruining our environment than to go "Oh well, too bad. Next time we'll catch it for sure." after?
I would agree with your comment if there was any verifiable proof of the theories, Du pont made billions out of the new gases HCFC's which had to be developed when the old ones CFC's were deemed ozone dangerous on the back of dodgy science. Now the same thing is happening with global warming. The CRU e mails have shown the science to be corrupt at the highest level (IPCC) its a scam brought to you by the Ozone people and guess what ! they have now decided that HCFC's are dangerous, more money
@mickdaniels1 Ever heard of the precautionary principle? It is better to prove that it doesn't cause any damage than to try and prove it does. This is like the cancer arguement--it took years to prove that smoking caused lung cancer.
Either way, waiting around until its too late doesn't really help anyone except the people who are selling cars. The side you are defending also stands to gain, even more so in fact.
And I would say that anything at some level is corrupt.
The precautionary principle is all very well if it doesent cost lives. The global warming alarmists like Al Gore ( who has already made zillions out of the carbon tax scam ) want to deprive third world countries of the right to burn their coal and create cheap carbon based electricity to lift them out of their poverty just like we in the western world did. Millions will continue to die of diseases and starvation while the rich get richer off the carbon tax scam,
I'm not saying that they should stop third world countries from using it, but I am saying that first world countries should stop or at the very least, slow down a lot. We have a lot of items that are not necessary--we really do not need these many cars for example.
Also, the right to burn coal will not stop them from getting the disease. A doctor might be able to help. Food would help with starvation. We have a surplus of that, so why don't we send it? Because it doesn't help the companies.
why should first world countries replace cheap cardon based electricity generation
with more expensive systems ? WHICH IN TURN WILL MAKE OUR ECONOMIES LESS COMPETETIVE AND LOSE US JOBS, or reduce the number of cars ? the science of gloibal warming is that increased atmospheric cO2 causes warming. This has been proven to be WRONG..we have had cooling on the planet for the past 13 years despite increased Co2..electricity in the third world will improve healthcare dramatically
@mickdaniels1 If you are implying there is no Global Warming then explain why the Polar Ice cap is melting. Why the sea level is rising. Why the temperature is rising.
there is no argument that the temerature has risen by 0.7 of one degree centigrade in the last 100 years. There is also no doubt that the temperature has dropped by the same value in the last 10 years. Artic ice has grown by 27% in the last two years, antartic ice has been increasing over the last 40 years, sea levels are not rising.have you seen any sea level rise ?? I have a boat in the atlantic for the past 40 years and I have seen no sea level rise
I have a personal theory on why the ozone layer was "created"-we have tested nuclear bombs capable of decimating all life on earth numerous times over. Now think-what was the result of radioactivity going straight up and through the sky?
Massive holes in our ozone-this is ALL our own doing. I have never believed driving to work daily is ruining as much as a megaton bomb test-STOP NUKES NOW!!!!

think of the ozone layer like sunscreen. without it, earth gets cancer.

The ozone hole is no worse now than it was in 1979.

well what do you know, 40 years later, and the ozone layer is still here.
false alarm.
oh well, at least they got billions in research funding!

@jwboll real smart genius! Don't you know these harm full chemicals spreads out evenly across the ozone.

@jwboll yes so we can die a more pain full death from harm full uv rays, floods and starvation from not being able to grow any thing.

lol, you should learn a hell of a lot more about the ozone layer if you think anything like that is going to happen.

but their hasn't been a nuke tested since 1991.
and the largest nukes were detonated by the russians

True, it is all our doing. If so, we can try and STOP it by, for one, driving cars less. It's something that an AVERAGE person can do by THEMSELVES.
And if you are driving to work daily, then it all adds up to a nuke.
