cats do that because as kitten feeding from their mother, the massaging would stimulate the production of milk. Cats are known to owe much of their behaviour to when they were kittens.

I've seen cats do that all the time,. it's something related with their claws. if a cat is confortable sitting on your lap, it might star doing that and to purr, as well.

I hear that cats do that stuff as a part of separation anxiety or something.. that's why they normally do it to their owners or where their owners sleep. The cat probably considers the dog to be it's mother or at least a family member

It's a reflex that all cat's have. They used to do that to get the milk from there mom, they enjoyed it so much that it becomes a reflex later on. They do it when there happy or on thing/people they like.
