I don't remember the date... 1978? 79? 80? but what I do remember is The Cars opening up for Boston. Both bands on top of their game and simply on fire that night.Still think about that magical evening from time to time.
The corporate bullshit hit these guys when they made the lead guitarist switch from left to right or vice versa anyway they where under the corporate blanket. They still rocked us,hell I have a scarf, and tee that still fits,I wish.78 I was 17
I wish I knew where the live concert videos were shot. I saw the Cars in 1978 at the Roxy in Hollywood. It was their first tour from Boston and I had never heard of them, but I certainly remembered them after. Their sound then was new and vibrant (I liked the synthesizer) and they were great live. Around the same time I met Ric Okasek at the Masque, a popular punk club in Hollywood at the time. All told, they made a lasting impression.
@JesusFreakJene : It appears that he is. I'm not sure if the original company is still around, or if a foreign country has bought their license, and perhaps they're now being made overseas. IMO, this band belongs in a special place in innovative rock history. They're definitely within a class of their own.
@spaceorbison A dork????? Lets see you ROCK an electric guitar the way he can :-) All I can say is that I am sure he is good with his hands if you know what I mean :-) Elliot Is Hot and The Cars Rock!
Saw them re-united on the Colbert Report the other night. With Ben Orr dead it just doesn't seem right. He was the lead singer on the majority of their hits.
The part when Elliot Easton is playing a solo spot and he is looking at Benjamin (1:14-1:17); Elliot's face totally looks orgasmic and it's funny and cute how Ben is looking at Elliot. Ben & Elliot are too hot to stop!
I can't believe we are able to see these amazing moments.
I wish we had these available to us when we were younger.
Saw them on David Letterman last month. ZERO stage presence. They sounded OK, but was a little late on most vocals. Looked like they were still practicing and just didn't have any life in the performance. Hope they get better...
I hated the Cars when I was young. I was a metalhead and they were just not cool. As time went by I cared less about what people thought of my musical tastes and I then found the Cars to be outstanding.
@solarvolcano The audience was heckling them... you can hear the nasty comments all throughout this concert... too bad they couldn't appreciate this brilliant band!
do people remember how they came out of nowhere with their own patented sound so similar to nirvana?.....pioneers treding their own trails in between the mountians of disco and punk rock.
Some of the best vocals I have heard by the Cars in a song. At 1:28 they sound great, but Ben always stands out with that excellent voice. The band is playing in complete unison!
@ PokerJoker811 - Sounds like your dad is around my age. I was lucky enough to see The Cars several times from their start and at their peak and yeah they were not the most flashiest or entergentic band in history but they were one of the best bands that could reproduce their studio sound live. They rocked every time I saw them. So many bands past and present didn't sound as good live as their studio stuff and thought putting on a show could replace that.
This vid confirms to me what my dad told me about The Cars. They're the epitome of a studio band. They'll crank out great songs, but they don't know how to do a concert. Playing everything note-for-note from the album, no solos or anything, and everyone's completely frozen where they are, especially Ocasek. Basically, the only difference between a Cars concert and a Cars album is that with an album, you can sit down comfortably while listening to it.
One of my all-time fave songs. Almost impossible to do live, especially the vocals! But they kicked arse here, they shouldve stuck with this one during their future tours, they wouldve easily mastered it i believe. However, gotta admit the level of difficulty is off the charts. Kinda like most of their music. However, they do make it look so easy!
@hotprofdude ....I know! ....I guess he just didn't do enough tasteless and useless shredding...lol. The funny thing....his solos are SO clean and unique....and MUCH more difficult than shredding scales in MANY ways! The guy was just killer! I've been playing for 35 years....teaching for almost 20....all styles...and I can tell you...I can't STAND long, boring guitar solos anymore...lol. This guy just makes PERFECTLY fitting solos! ...and that's a LOT more difficult than most realize:)
thank you for being mature about the situation that is so rare these days and dont get me wrong i do like the cars but in my opinion in the eightes they flopped
