I often liked to play through a battle, defeat everyone but one guy, retreat, walla improved characters.

Mages, Wizards, and Sorceresses are great to have in your party. Never fight without them. Archers and knights are also good, as well as any flying character.

yah it is, my main character dude didnt get any additional stats lvling up 3 times in a row :'(

later on, Gong has really excellent defense if u keep him on the team

I'm sure he does (though remember stat level ups are random). But I never found his offensive or healing abilities worthwhile enough to keep him around. You really don't need a hybrid barehanded fighter/healer.
