  • hi everyone im a 12 yearold singer, i really hate it when people post stuff like this on songs because its about the song but i think it would just be awesome if you could check out my channel ill b doing some death cab for cutie VERY soon thank u so much:)

  • Yes Vh1 did indeed bring me here-about 2 years ago. Still listening to it too. So all you hipsters can go cry about something else.

  • The song is really an eye opener.

I have heard of the band and yet had never taken an audio bite to really listen to them.

    Simply amazing song.

  • This song is beautiful. I didnt like this album at all when I first heard it, more I listened to it, the more I realized it's amazing. I'm just happy it's nothing like plans, finally they're becoming themselves again.

  • One of their best somgs to date! What an awesome return to form for Death Cab, They are as awesome as they ever were. Narrow Stairs is WAYYYY better than Plans! Plans was a commercial piece of crap! Narrow Stairs sounds more like a Death Cab For Cutie Album.

  • Great song and a nice vid

I just keep rediscovering this album. One of the best albums of 2008 imo

  • I know you didn't compare Coldplay and Deathcab. You need to open your ears my friend.

  • My favorite song off the new album

Love the pic of the wine glasses!

  • Thanks.

  • I think that it's really funny how you put random death cab picutres in there, but they somehow worked. Where did you find those pictures anyway, I've never seen them?

  • I just searched the internet through google and yahoo.

  • Drums have a Bohnam feel to them which is what I like about them. That nice big swing sound. Listen to Fool In the Rain by Zeppelin to here the similarities!

  • Well I'm not dumb, but thanks anyway. Hey I have over 80000 views, I must've done something right. Quit hatin'.

  • This song opened me to Deathcab. I'm so glad I didn't get my music ego in the way, or I would've never had the gift of such an epic tune and fantastic band.

One of the best songs, ever.

  • music for smart people

  • Yes, this is excellent music. Death Cab are lyrically amazing. Much better music compared to other newer bands these days..

  • this isnt faggy shit you dumb shit this is good music

  • great vid, great song, good job

  • Did you really find that offensive. I was just trying to find pictures of a choir and those were the two i picked. They looked like they were having fun. I don't understand why I can't have black people in my video. Help me out here. Sorry if i offended. If I had just put all white people that would make you happier?

    Can't win for trying.

    Go Obama!!

  • You didn't offend anyone...as an African i think it was great and that children's choir is from my country and they are amaizing. Beautiful video and song... thanks for the upload

  • I'm sorry, but I don't think you should be offended by this guy putting pictures of black people in his video. I'm totally sure that he didn't mean it in any way offensive, he just wanted to find pictures for this video, which might make people feel emotion. Just because the people happened to be black doesnt make him racist or offending in any way.

  • this was uploaded on my birthday :]

  • Great song. :)

  • i don't understand how you think narrow stairs sucks. you have to listen to it as an album instead of just one song at a time. besides, Gibbard said he was aiming for something a little darker, and he hit the nail on the head. This is by far one of DCfC's best albums. For instance, look at "Your New Twin-Sized Bed". One of the best songs they've ever made in my opinion, because everything just clicks. give it another listen. but, hey, its your opinion, and i cant change it if you dont want me to

  • This album is good, but I agree with billthebutcher, new listeners won't be used to it, I personally prefer Transatlanticism, but Death Cab owns, nonetheless.

  • every one of his songs have awesome lyrics

  • This song is absolutly my favorite song from Death Cab For Cutie

  • I think its tough for some death cab fans to digest this album because its a change, but i agree that its probably the best album although it will definitely not be their most popular album.

  • This album doesnt even compare to Plans or The Photo Album

  • You forgot to mention a certain album called Transatlanticism there buddy. Thats by far the best album by death cab but plans and photo album are great too.

  • Well i guess everyone has their own opinion. My opinion is that this album is the best :)

  • This must be the best track on the album, bixby canyon bridge may take first place. DCFC <3

  • Great song!, gibbard its a genius

  • I LOVE DEATH CAB SO MUCH.

  • Best track on the album, hands down!!

there will more popular radio tracks, but i think this is the best track on this album

  • "We watched the plumes paint the sky gray,

She laughed and danced through the field of graves, And there I knew it would be all right"

    Beautiful lyrics :)

  • i dont get what its about,

are they gonna die or something?

  • The Song is about the fires in umm i think it was in LA or something last year. Alot of famouse ppl's houses were burnt down in it. He wrote the song about that, he was watching everything burn on a hill somewhere and wrote the lyrics came to him there.

i used to think it was about the end of the world or something. But they said in an interview it was about the fires in LA.. i think LA

  • it is literally about fires that have taken place in southern california, from san diego to LA and destroyed hundreds if not thousands of homes at the time this was written. around september or october 2007

  • i'm thinking of writing a book and this would make an amazing scene! would have to give them credit of course:)

  • What, so just because they became popular with Plans, they're now ruined? A band going mainstream doesn't automatically mean they suck.

  • this is one of my favorite songs from the new CD

    its constantly on repeat:)

  • Last night at bumbershoot when this song was coming in Ben said, "Sometimes beautiful things happen... They do happen." AMAZING!!!

  • An excellent performance; my buddy and I were there from Marysville. Splendid show.

  • i actually like the live version at bumbershoot better than the one on the cd. great sparks show at the end

  • great song. fav on the new cd

  • I love it! <3

  • beautiful. i will never, ever tire of death cab.

  • are you kidding me this album is probably their best album.... and didn't i hear some where that it went #1? anyways i do agree coldplay's new album is crap haha

  • Good sir you obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Listen to the lyrics. It is a tribute to the Fires that ravaged California last summer. Listen closely and you shall hear beauty and brilliance

  • I can't get enough of this song... just... wow. This band is amazing.

  • i love death cab for cutie. everytime i listen to any one of their songs it just gets better and better. Also since the lyrics are so heart-felt and deep you find new meaning each and everytime you listen to them.

  • Haha... love it when people have to hear Jesus or The Lord in the lyrics of a song or listen to christian rock to be happy with music... it's all music, people, and all of it is wonderful and special in its own way, and holds its own unique spark of inspiration. Don't judge music or bands by their religion or lackthereof, judge them by their sound. All a matter of opinion, anyway... but when people are too sheltered inside a bubble of familiarity, it annoys me.

  • wait, i cant figure out what its about?

    0_o?

  • fires, in fields of grapevines. i'll give you an example, california.

  • haha, it's about so much more than simply forest fires.

it would seem he's using grapevine fires as a metaphor for bad news and general shit that can spread (across the "grapevine"). it seems he's just running away from it and ignoring it, ("and there i knew it would be alright") - as if to say you should just ignore it and be happy. it seems in the final line he's saying dont worry because its just a matter of time before the shit passes.

    only my thoughts though.

    gibbard's a genius regardles

  • I agree, but I also believe it has images of life and death. The image of a girl dancing through "the field of graves" shows that even in the face of death, life exists as well. the song also alludes the inevitability of death "it's only a matter of time before we all burn"

  • No. It is indeed about the fires that ravaged California last summer "the ocean air fanned the flames", is just one of a handful of clues to let you in on it.

  • That is most certainly ONE interpretation of the song, but most certainly it is not the only one.

  • That is definitely ONE interpretation! But not the only one!

  • I Love the imagery and meaning in this song, it's my favorite from Narrow Stairs.

  • A masterpiece that will never get old.

  • I love it, your time editing was not wasted. Thanks for you work, sir.

  • God, McGerr has such a sexy groove in this song.

He's the one of the most deceptively skilled drummer's I've heard in modern music.

  • grab the teagan and sara cd, chris walla produced it and McGeer did all the drums, they didnt use any machines

  • dude these guys dominate everything!!!! They are the the coolest and the best.....this song and bixby canyon bridge are their best!!! I wouldn't say this is their best album tho, it's hella good, but my fav is their old skool stuff like something about airplanes....that album is sweet!

  • okay, instead of freaking cos, OMG!! they're atheists! or whatever, you could either jsut listen to it if you like it or not listen to it if you dont. you dont have to spaz. if you dont like them cos they're atheists, or whatever, dont go to their videos and dont post stupid biased things.

  • For whoever said it wasn't an atheist band is wrong and ill tell you why Ben Gibbard writes all the song's and he's an atheist and not all but alot of his songs are about atheism. this song is about california wildfires but for example i will follow you into the dark listen to it carefully you'll understand and alot of their songs.

  • Does anyone else picture a perfect oficial video going through their heads when they listen to this? I picture Ben Gibbard just watching the news, and going outside, only to actually face the apocalypse, and some bandmates escaping and trying to beat it. That sort of thing.

  • I saw these guys live when they came to Toronto. It was absolutely the most amazing experience to be within a stones-throw distance from Ben & the band. Awesome song, awesome album...DCFC has yet to disappoint.

  • On the island this year? it was so sick iwas there to!

  • I think he meant "secular" rock...

This song is lovely. It's between this and Bixby Canyon Bridge for my favorite on Narrow Stairs.

  • WTF is Atheist rock?

  • Probably one of my favorite songs ever.

  • death cab for cutie isnt atheist rock you fucking retard. its just plain lyrical music asshole

  • wow ashloomis...how sheltered are you?

  • Ummm what do you mean by that?

  • talkin to yourself? :-)

  • "Before" at 0:42 is visible but only if you really look for it. I don't think its intentional- just one of those things that you can find if you imagine you found it. Kinda like Satan's face or angels in the 911 smoke.

  • wtf do you do in your free time??? this song rocks btw

  • this song is depressing to me cause reasons you should not know

  • i love the song and the vid is very well done goodjob musicfan!!!! : )

  • I love this song!!

  • all right well I paused it and i'm looking for 'before' and i can't find it for the life of me

  • yep yep. i saw it too

  • really good imagery in this video, fits the song really well. Hopefully they can get the fires under control out there

  • fuck, I love ths song so damn much.

it kills me that they are touring in Australia and not NZ

  • best song on narrow stairs

  • how much better is this version than the album one ...

  • this is the only one i like off the new album ... i love death cab so much but the new one, other than this song, hasn't done much for me ... any1 else?

  • While I don't think Narrow Stairs is a terrible album, all the others were above stellar, this one just couldn't be as good as them. One of their albums had to be the one that couldn't top the rest. :D My favorites are this song, The Ice is Getting Thinner, Bigsbey Canyon Bridge, and Cath.

  • I saw them twice during their swing thru southern california. I like them but they are sleepy type band. You just to deal with it. They need someone to solo with some talent. I still wear out their songs.

  • this song is so beautiful. the topic seems so depressing, but at the same time hopeful and peaceful. it's just so relaxing and calming too. love it. one of my favorite songs on the new album

  • BAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH good one

  • calm down fag, you might think bout that due to the last lines but it has a different meaning

  • The singer sounds like Weird Al....

  • lol now that you mention it, i hear it too

  • very soothing track. Nice and mellow

  • nice job with the pics!

  • let me let you all in on a little secret..

only the band itself can define what type of music they play.

not some two-bit fan or person off of the street. :)

  • thier a tigght band regardless !

  • yeah emo mean emotional

and thats pretty much an accurate discription of every death cab song ever writen. so honestly doesnt that make them an emo band? and yes they are listed as an emo band in alot of places. screamo bands are often classified as emo bands because often they sing "emotional" music. that doesnt mean they HAVE to be screamo to be emo, you guys are looking at genras as labels and not acording to the meaning. but thanks for all you guys's oppinions i appreachiat the imput =)

  • yeah no shit. i dont think emo can be called a genre cos it depends on the song, fuck even pop singers have sung something emotional that has happend in there lives. haha fucking jessica simpson did some gay song about her divorce, thats an emotional song and there is no way she would be called emo so its fuckign stupid.

btw i in no way like jessica simpsons music haha

  • lol... Pretty sure they list themselves as an Indie band... not an Emo one. There are plenty of bands that mention death or bad relationships that are NOT Emo, so it's wrong of you to assume that DCFC are because of that. Commit your fallacies elsewhere.

    Thanks, bye.

P.S.- I'm hoping to get a cover of this song up soon :)

  • Lol.

If You Think These Guys Are Emo You Are Not Very Bright.

  • I know seriously they're indie rock you idiots.

  • It seems stupid to pigeon hole a band as Emo because they mention death or love relationships gone bad. Please. If you think they are Emo that's cool, but you can't make us believe that hogwash.

  • that's so funny. it's expressive hun, not what you call emo. emo originated as a form of screamo rock that had to do with anger not suicide or sadness. come on now, be smarter than that. and Death Cab for Cutie is classified as Indie Rock not 'emo'.

  • And they are all amazing lines.

If you think they're emo that's fine.

But just shut up and enjoy the damn music, and if you can't do that, then don't listen to it and ruin it for everyone else.

  • song goes well with many of the images... the magic mountain shot looks intense! Cant believe its been a year sice most of so cal was on burning...

  • This is my favorite song on the album. If I was to rate my top three, it would be this, You Can Do Better Then Me, and Long Division.

  • oh my god i feel bad for you so you have like no one to connect with like at all? i used to feel like that too

  • o how love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah this is for sure one of the best songs on the new disc, long live the best emo inie band of our day

  • death cab for cutie definitely isn't emo

  • baha, are you seriouse? look at there web site, myspace, purevolume, pretty much everywhere you look they are listed as an emo band, and , do you listen to any of there music ? perhaps seen the music video for 'what sarah said' wich consists of a girl cutting herself!lets pull some lines from some song. -> this continues on the next comment

  • The wake up call to a rented room, sounded like an alarm of impending doom.

Gotta be my favorite line of this song.

  • I love this song

  • this song is great. It's up there with What Sarah Said, Transatlanticism and Scientist Studies in my opinion.

  • this is a beautiful song.

  • I loved dcfc till the previous album, but this song is beautiful, it's like the old dcfc songs

  • wow wow wow im adicted to this song i love it

  • this is definitely one of my favorite songs from narrow stairs. to be honest i was kind of disappointed in ben with the a majority of the lyrics... but maybe i was just being to critical and expected something humanly impossible... even for benny :P

overall its a good addition to death cab, but in my opinion transatlanticism is their best work so far.

this album is undoubtedly going to grow on me over time though...

  • K this song sounds sooo much like another song ive heard before. Does anyone know what it is? that would help me out so much. its driving me crazy

  • Best song on the new album. Simply beutiful!

  • somebody leaked a fake version of the album, that's why theres multiple versions

  • actually, i think the band actually did that. april fools joke.

  • If you tried to download their new cd before it came out there were quite a few fake versions.

  • Can someone tell why there are 2 completely diff versions on the net?

  • wow so deep

  • wow i love this song.

  • This song kiks azz! So0o Mello/chill/kill/bill!! Best song on this album...

  • love this song on the album!

  • Hey, I'm gonna go see them in SD soon too! You seeing them June 20th? That's when I'm going :) I can't wait :D

  • Yep, June 20th at SDSU and on June 23rd at the Nokia. I imagine the sound will be better at the new state of the art Nokia.

  • i love this song, in fact i think the whole new album is great but i like this song best. its just so relaxed.

the video is pretty cool too.

burn awaaaayyyyy... god i love it.

  • Thanks. I'm going to go see them in San Diego and in LA soon. I hope its a super show.

  • this song is one of the best on the album.. what the hell are you talking about!? i also like the very last song too. and you can do better than me.

  • woot!

  • Can you smell the smoke?

  • I love these images, takes me right back to the Fires in October, pretty unreal. Great video!

  • Thanks!! I appreciate the kind words.

  • This is my FAAAVORITE song on the album!! =)

  • the most beautiful song they have i think. awesome

  • What a great song!!
