I found this movie to be a good movie, just not a GREAT movie. I found it to be overrated. I still liked it, but MAN was it overrated! There wasn't even any comedy relief in it, I understand it wants to be serious, but at least make it serious with some comedy relief in it like The Lion King! So, case and point, I like this movie, but it is really overrated.

I'm writing this and I just came out of the theatre.. One thing, tears rolled in my eyes. I think this was the most beautiful thing the mankind has ever seen since the Holocaust. Bravo Scorsese, Butterfield, Chloe, Kingsley! Wonderful it was.

I work on clocks and of course the real tower clock works don't look anything like they were depicted in this movie. They're actually a bit boring to watch. The huge constantly moving wheels in the film are there for effect. If you can get past that, and focus on the story it's a really wonderful and heartwarming film in my opinion. I loved it.

My main beef is not with the movie as a movie (I understand it is a kind of fantasy, and things in the movies tend to be larger-than-life), but I simply have to question, since clocks are so CENTRAL to this movie (Hugo apparently lives in the clock tower, works on the clocks, his Dad was a clockmaker, etc.) why couldn't they have gotten a few people in from the NAWCC to design the sets, or at least acted as consultants??? Why should this movie be trumped by All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 for clocks?!?

If you look at Mark Frank's tower clock website (he is a collector and restorer of mainly European tower clock movements), or the site of the Balzer Family Clock Works (who build and restore primarily American tower clocks) you will see what these things really look like... not nearly as large or scary as depicted in the movie. I like to think they are painted a bit cheerier too, "Hugo" 's set designer seems to have really gone for a dark-grey, metallic, steampunk look and feel here.
