@Wakkami The lesson ( Mp3's and tab ) can be downloaded at bluegrassbooksonline. The link is in the written introduction for each of the video lessons.
The intro is included in the first measures of the tablature which can be found at our site, bluegrassbooksonlinedotcom. The chords needed to play are included in the tab as well. I did not notate the rhythm.I hope you enjoy the tune. Keep Pickin'
First time I heard this was a few years ago. I learned how to play the beginning and have played it over and over again, while I've practiced the picking technique to full speed. Now I find it easier to learn the rest of the song. And I am looking forward to be able to play it in real Bryan Sutton full speed tempo.. haha! Blessings from the Faroe Islands.
@mtmini Maybe a 510 - Taylor's been making the 510 (mahogany & spruce, like a D-18) since the 80s, at the old Lemon Grove shop. Great guitars for bluegrass, and the strings aren't three inches off the neck, like some are. : )
what brand/model gutiar are you using in the video? Can't tell from here...sounds great...more than likely more than I can afford...thought it wouldn't hurt to ask anyway...thanks
wonderful tune ive never heard this before i wonder if it would workout well if you used a sort of brush style like maybelle carter a beautiful never the less
Yes, the Tab is a note for note transcription of the video, and can be found on our free lessons page at bluegrassbooksonlinedotcom. Have fun with it.
that is like one of the most perfectly played songs Ive ever heard. Think Ive listened to it nearly 50 times. Keep up the fantastic work and beautiful picking.
I have been around Bluegrass music my entire life and I do believe that is the clearest most perfectly played song I have ever had the enjoyment of listening to.
I've been playing guitar for about 2 1/2 years... and started learning a bluegrass tune 'Dixie Hoedown' a couple of days ago. Right now, I am just going to learn all of it first, and then work on speed. I have a little over half learned, but how long did it take you to learn these songs and have them up to speed? The song is in 190bpm, but I play it at 135bpm right now. :-/
Steve Kaufman, the only three time national flatpicking champion (the real contest in Winfield, KS), said in his video called "Picking up Speed" that he learned "Soldier's Joy" in about five minutes but it took him three years to get it up to speed.
Thanks so much for the video and the tab on the website. Superb and unique version of a melodious but standard tune. Is the slow tempo simply for instructional purposes or do you actually play in that relaxed, lilting manner when performing the song?
The free tab and Mp3's for this and all of our other free lessons maybe downloaded at our website bluegrassbooksonlinedotcom. Hope you enjoy them, and keep pickin'
as richard said below i've played this song a ton but i've never heard an arragemtent like that before, even on all the cd's i've got, wonderful version of this, i think i'll be checking out your web site now!
pleasant as early morning mist, blackberry jam, summer melons, bluebirds, smoke from the old chimney, and the baby goats walkin long the lane,...hurray for you!!!
sweet pick'n although I have been playing this tune for years it is still one of my favorites. I have never played it quite like this and I can't wait to do so. Sounds sweet when its slowed down like that. Thanks for the post and Peace from Alaska for now.
i so want to rock that up and put some banging words to that lol

While not every grass tune needs to be played at "warp" speed, Blackberry usually does. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Is a recording available anywhere of you playing this version of Blackberry at full speed?

your technique has really nice flow, I'm not into bluegrass but I still think this is nice guitar music.
