To all the haters: Please check Philip's guitar work from today (this is about 5+ years old?). He has slowed down his phrasing a lot. I love his InYourFace attitude here, but do prefer his more "controlled" approach that he's been using for the last couple of years.
he is still playing the blues but has replaced the F# with F natural, and he is using D# as well instead of D natural. This gives a sorta Spanish Phrygian feel..
Sure, he's fast, sure he plays "hot" licks but where is the actual music? That's the problem I have with a lot of guitar players in the past 20 or so years. It's all wanking and scales and how fast they can play. They cite Hendrix as a big influence, but they didn't learn from him. Jimi was about creating sound and music not mindless noodling.
The "problem" here is that the video is concentrating on his solos and not on the full songs. Now you may not care for his style but there is definitely music there....
I can understand where you're coming from, but that's still somewhat naive. If Buddy Guy played ridiculously fast, you'd call that 'blues'. I would hardly call it mindless playing.
This video is awkward... if you go through and spend a little time delving into Philip's videos on YouTube you will see he is so much more than a virtuoso guitarist. This video doesn't accurately portray the extent of his musical ability. This ability ranges from being a phenominal vocalist, to being a tremendously talented songwriter, to being not just a shredder at times, but being one that can really portray and evoke emotion through song.
This music is fun to play but I can only listen to so much of the pentatonic wank. It's neeer deeedily, neeer deedily. This is in every Guitar Center store at most any time of day.
Still fun to play with, like fat chicks and mopeds, as long as your friends don't see ya.

I understand what you are saying any two cent asshole can get up there and solo over a I-IV-V, I get sick of hearing people talk shit about good rock music and the people playing it. If You can bring as much energy as Philip does to every single performance GET ON IT !! lets HEAR IT because its not about fast or slow notes it about what YOU hear and feel right then and there period

So true. Sometimes I feel the vibrato is a bit much. And whats with playing the licks so extremely fast over and over... He really is so so good but man. He could be better.
