  • Potter takes this melody and really makes it speak --but really how do you explain the thrill of hearing improvisation that really works like this performance-Potter elevates this song at a deep level --only a master musician can do this--I'm done with writng--this is just ridiculously great!!!

  • Try and sing what's in your heart. Then put a bass clarinet in your mouth and sing through it. That's what I'm experiencing here.

  • Dear Chris Potter,

    Please father my children.

    Sincerely,

    Me

  • Ha! Christ lives! And he chose bass clarinet!

  • Bad ass! I used to play with Nate at a theme park back in the early 90's. Best musician I have ever played with! Chris plays with amazing soul.

  • I don't like it because it sounds like a alto and it is a bass... But he play verry well!

  • Brilliant. Love the version of this on his new album.

  • uh, the timbre, moron. He's playing it for the sound, not for the range.

  • i saw then. best show of my life. swear

  • bass

  • is it bass clarinet or alto? cause in the video it says alto clarinet... but the description says it's bass. :S

  • bass

  • Beautiful arrangement.

  • Christ was a carpenter, not a potter!

  • nice playing on bass clarinet. If he used a different mic and placement it would probably show off his true sound.

An EV RE20 (or RE27) placed about knee high pointing up toward the chest, 3 feet away would bring out the bass sound that is missing.

  • These guys are playing very loudly; with the mic that far away, you'll get a ton of wash from the other instruments.

THe best bass clarinet mics are by Applied Microphone Technologies. The AMT System 1 works best; they make a special b. clarinet clamp, and you put one mic on the bell, one higher up on the body.

  • holy crap he sounds like a saxophone up high 0.o

  • "Christ" Potter? Was that intentional?

  • I love Chris Potter's take on this song. This is a prime example why Chris Potter is amazing. He doesn't just play bebop, he so bored with bebop he has invented his own style of jazz.

  • 3:20! CHURCH!

  • hey i didnt know he played clarinet too...i didnt even know a clarinet could sound like that, then again he is chris potter, nice vid

  • Theres lots of people doing different things with the clarinet. Benny Maupin,Don Byron, Eric Dolphy, John Ellis, and Chris Speed among others. Check 'em out!

  • Chris Potter also plays piano, drums, and guitar. He pisses off many other musicians, ;-)

  • He started on Clarinet. Changed to Alto sax about 2 years later.

  • really great video, thanks for posting!

  • taborn steals it----superior rhodes maestro

  • that's not a sax. that's a bass clarinet

  • He switches to tenor sax to finish. And he is quite marvelous on both :^)

  • its an alto clarinet not a bass clarinet, at least thats what it says in the credits

  • The credits are wrong. An alto calrinet is half the size.

  • definitely a bass clarinet, but technically, a regular clarinet is half the size. an alto clarinet would be a little less longer than half way in between them...not trying to be a douche, just saying.

  • yeah, definitely a Bass Clarinet.

  • Chris Potter is possibly my favourite sax player after seeing that! He can make great music without playing a million notes a second. His phrasing is fantastic over the chord changes. An amazing ear!
