  • Nirvana was revered mostly because of the lyrics, which are still outstanding. Musically they weren't pioneers, although I do consider In Utero to be a masterpiece. But anyone claiming Nirvana haven't influenced anyone, is plain ignorant. Nirvana was the first band of their kind to really hit the big time and therefore reached an audience who had never heard of Tool of any of the other bands that were ruling the alternative scene at the time.

  • NIRVANA RIP THE SHIT OUTTA THESE THATCHER REJECTS!

  • The guitar-riff "Come As You Are" resembles this one, but the tempo, the mood and the lyrics are very different. The most important thing is that this a really good song!

  • Guy below...Nirvana...better?! Go fuck yourself!

  • Whereas "Come As You Are" is a vulgar copy of this, it is still a far superior piece-Albeit, that wouldn't be HARD!

  • Ladies and gentlemen: Conan O'Brien on lead guitar.

    Man, these guys rock!

  • Nirvana has influenced me...

  • i see this video kinda serves as an official "nirvana haters" video/thread. I like that

  • killing fans are way cooler in this vid than nirvana fans in come as you are vid

  • Also, Paul Raven. Legend!

  • Fucking badass riff. No wonder Nirvana stole it.

  • 0:12 LOL

  • brezhnev.....wata guy

  • I remember when this song broke out...brings back great memories of NYC and friends no longer living today

    Thanx

  • hes got big hands

  • Yeah I remember the scratch marks in the original video diver143 mentioned. Don't think it was a whipping though!

  • "Embedding disabled by request" sucks

  • 80's

  • They censored this video!! In the very original Geordie did a turn with his back to the camera and there were blood stripes on it after a whipping.

  • What a timely video/song that was.

  • geordie walker

    can take a shit

    on conan o'brien. seriously...

  • Great band, however in this video the guitar player looks like either Morten from A-ha or Devon from Knight Rider :-)

  • there are many riffs bands use. This is just one of the stronger ones thus more obvious.Look at what wonderful contrasts resulted. Many blues songs use this too!

  • Nirvana copies this song rs rs

  • wow, just remembered how good this song is! Also, can't believe I forgot how hot the guitaris was!!:P

  • Check out,,,LIFELOVER-(MySpys)

  • Paul Raven

    RIP

  • A friend of mine told me to check this song out because Nirvana "riped it of". I must say the riff is very similar, but who cares anyway, they're stil two very different songs, and both rock!

  • @edissortofdead but the bassline is the same only slower on nirvana's "come as you are" song.

I don't think it was intentionnal plagierism, when u play guitar or bass its very easy to mistake a new riff with something u heard before and unconsciously use in a new composition

  • Well...the original grunge/industrial sound is actually coming from Joy Division, but Killing Joke were definitely around that time and they even supported Joy Division back in late 70's.

  • anyone know what kind of gibson that is, is it an ES 175 or an ES 135?

  • It's an ES-295. Which is pretty much an Es-175 with the gold finish off the Les Paul Gold top.

It was a model only made between the years of 1952-57.

  • @posimativelynegative

wow cool, that guitar must be worth a fortune ( 100 000 $ or something like that )

  • @yetonGhul

    It sure sounds that way.

  • Umm, you mean come as you are sounds like THIS, right?

  • The original grunge!!

  • Music isn't invented by musicians? Ummm, yeah it is. Music isn't spiritual or mysterious or any of that bullshit. It's just like martial arts, surfing and so many other things in that, people who are crap at it feel the need to invent this whole, insubstantial, "spiritual" side to it that they CAN be good at in their own minds, and that no-one can disprove.

  • Come on...music isn't invented by musicians....it grows...chords are chords...in tune...out of tune...the blues....the devil's chords...any song can be tracked to the blues and any song can be further tracked to classical sonnets and all that....man, the opening piano of, flippin cold as ice is almost exactly like the song from the soap the young and the restless...play guitar or piano by ear....and see how many songs you find via one chord...one key...

  • holy shit what the fuck are you smoking?!?!?! music is invented by musicians you retard fuck! it grows? WHAT THE FUCK! tracked to the blues? the guys who play by ear are the ones who most of the time don't have any formal studies on music, like yourself. Take your marijuana shit somewhere else hippie!

  • Shows you don't understand the nature of invention. It is never the case of spontaneous, unconnected generation.

  • Come as you are, as you were, as an old ememy....

    HOLY FUCK

  • does anyone know where that footage of the punks from 1:13 - 1:18 is from? or was it just shot for the vid? much help if anyone knows

  • Actually sounds like an old beatles song but which one?

  • likes this

  • Saw them at the John Anson Ford Theater! Loud as fuck and going off!

  • Killing Joke reissues on vinyl soon!!

  • nirvana borrow the riff from the damned - life goes on not killing jokes eighties.

  • What the fuck? This is a rip off of the damned's life goes on. So did killing Joke rip them off then Nirvana ripped KJ off? This shit sounds just like life goes on.

  • with "Come As You Are" i mean

  • Humm.. even the riff is the same i don't see any other likeness

  • hahahahaha don't you have a dick to go suck

  • don't you have a mum to go fuck

  • Muito foda!!!!!

  • Damn, I just heard this the first time and it blew me away. What else do I have missed over the years??? By the way: The Drummer looks like Johnny Flodder.

  • This is older than "Come As You Are", not to mention superior...end of discussion.

  • Come As You Are younger and good this song is good to just enjoy the fucking music you fag

  • no come as you are cnt b younger cuz nirvana formed afta this song was made, cuz apparently this is in 1985

  • Poor little baby, whats the matter? Did I hurt your feelings by insulting your dead boyfriends music?

  • oh go i just fell to cyber bullying im going to go tell my mommie on you fucking dumbfuck why dont you all do us a favor and go meet my "boyfirend" and brush your teeth with a 9 mm thanks

  • come on nirvanal, it's late, go to bed

  • people like you justify negative eugenics.

  • and I'm talking about nirvana1852. You obviously are a huge tool.

  • got a problem with that

  • LOL

  • @Nirvana1852 Eighties was a song released in April 1984.

  • lolll music is a cycle of diffrent styles it changes all the time but then goes back 2 the start but diffrenty kinda

  • Kurt Cobain Was a Fucking great guitar player u fucking ignorent!!!

if it wasnt for him he wouldnt have broke off tool stp and other 90s bands from the underground scene if u wouldve known anything u piece of shit!!!

  • Jesus fucking Christ are you wrong. Cobain didn't get any national attention until 1992. Tool formed in 1990, and STP was kicking around in various forms as early as 1986. Kurt Cobain was a mediocre guitarist at best, and Nirvana didn't influence anyone but the god-awful post-grungers of the early 2000s. Does it hurt being so "ignorent", or do you drink away the pain?

  • mmm, drinking the pain away.

and yea, come as you are sounds very much alike.

  • cuz nirvana apparently stole it

    : (

  • @status343 It's "ignorant".....

  • @wmcwhinney You mean the quotation marks around the misspelled word weren't a big enough clue that I was mocking the user who originally made the error? Wow. But hey, while we're playing English teacher, I just thought I'd let you know that there are only three dots in an ellipsis, not five.

  • @status343 with you bro

  • its the same notes as come as you are, just the intervals are different. cobain admitted he ripped it off from this song, so no point to argue. he was a shit guitarist, thats why. but nirvana music was still good. much better than the crap thats popular these days in the mainstream.

  • Huh...this DOES sound like Come As You Are...except this one sounds more badass

  • uma das mais importantes bandas do cenario punk mundial, maravilha... fantastico.... os anos 80 deveriam ser eternos....

  • This song was so much fun to stomp around a dance floor to

  • Everthing came together in this song. Great song...catchy.

  • Esses caras são engraçados =P

  • Fuck Nirvana. That's just blatant copying right there.

The greatest bands of that era were Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth, the Pixies and Kyuss.

  • you do realize Eighties is a rip off of Life Goes On by The Damned right? which that song is also a rip off of Baby Come Back by The Equals so before you criticize Nirvana for plagarism you should know that this song is a rip off of another song before it but hey they're all great songs & bands

  • Good point about the Eighties riff aping Life Goes On, but the note pattern is dissimilar enough to not merit a real 'ripoff' title. I don't agree that Life Goes On is a ripoff of Baby Come Back. You're hearing a similar pattern, but the key for Baby Come Back is major while the key for Eighties, Life Goes On, and Come As You Are is minor. Popular music is more about redefining and less about originality. Case in point? Blues artists rip each other off every second, so...whatever.

  • yeah thats true, sure technically everyone who plays a certain genre is ripping off the original lol, i really don't know what's the big deal about similarities, to tell you the truth they're all great songs way better than what we hear nowadays & you know whats the sad thing about this whole rip off ideal? more people are only gonna know Killing Joke for suing Nirvana rather than knowing how great their music was & the same is happening to Joe Satriani with this whole Coldplay Viva la Vida crap

  • You're right about that. People are more interested in who's suing who, and who's fighting who than the music or art that they're putting out. Killing Joke Rules!

  • Great band! This is one of my favorite videos from them!

  • Stop talking about fucking nirvana. Considering how easy it is to plagiarise in rock music, a genre that essentially recycles the same notes and scales in almost every song, come as you are is nothing like eighties.

Anyway, I especially love the vocals of this song, his delivery is pretty spectacular and the lyrics are very relatvent to the time it was written.

  • you're an idiot

  • you are

  • Oh yeah, music made by a pathetic white trash junkie is sooo much better than Killing Joke, right on brother!

  • This is a good song, but Killing Joke will never have as much success or fame as Nirvana did and they've been around much longer.

  • Let's hear it for captain obvious!

  • Come as you are = Eighties Smells like teen spirit = Gouge away

  • This song is very apt for Vancouver in 2010. A song about greed, selfishness, destruction and a hatred of your own community. The Olympics logo at the beginning of the video, reminds me all too well of the chaos and bullshit Vancouver will have to put up with, just so these corporate wanks and suck ups can stroke their egos for less than 3 weeks, while completely shitting on the local people. Eat this, you selfish, greedy, destructive, community hating, corporate bastards!

  • nirvana were not gods anyway as we see here

  • yes.they maybe unfortunately copied those tunes.but nirvana has a few good songs.

  • Do you mean the songs, where they ripped off the pixies. FUCK kURT COBAIN

  • I'm sure I saw this in 1984. Top stuff.

  • Killing Joke stolen their name from John Cleese...loooool

  • Or from Alan Moore...

  • I'm pretty sure Killing Joke was there before Moore wrote the Killing Joke.

Incidentally, I've always thought Killing Joke would make a great soundtrack for Watchmen. It sure would be a hell of a lot better than fucking MCR covering Bob Dylan.

  • beautiful guitar sound, chorus and all..

  • Cobain ripped off the riff and now he's dead. There is justice in this world, apparently :)

  • He didn't rip it off completely, it just sounds like it. And it's totally unfair when you say justice, because we all know this had nothing to do with Cobain's death.

  • have you ever heard about irony or black humour ?

  • Do you even read comments or do you find yourself hitting random keys on a keyboard and strangely forming words? He said it was irony :S

  • and are u some kind of a weirdo dude? u dont even know to whom i replied.. since u dont shut up..and the dude i replied didnt say sth about irony. next time use ur head

  • Right, instead of flaming me you actually proved my point! Well done!

  • kk what ever u asybitch now sod off

  • But thats not the same riff like in come as you are . . .

just watch how guitarist plays it . . .

and then watch kurts song . . .

  • eighties was first then nirvana

  • Life goes on by the damned was before eighties

  • this sounds like come as you are by nirvana but others say this song sounds like dirty magic by the offspring but i dont think so listen to that and see if you think it sounds similar

  • it is impossible to write a song by not being inspiring by any other song and not to steal some riffs and convert these in your own style

    smells like teen spirit

it is also in someway similiar to boston

    both are great

  • Fuck, Nirvana still this song for "Come as you are"...

  • kurt cobain said this in his diary

  • seems not much has changed!

    push struggle..

    ta jaz.

  • the best i am czech but he is undeth he playd vyth cechomor it is czech band an evry song ar FAMOUS Killing Joke i love it:D

  • R.I.P. Raven

  • the main guitar riff sounds just like nirvana's "come as you are". kurt cobain = riff-thief? lol.

  • That's quite known. He said he took it from them.

  • yeah plus answer me this who's been around longer? Which song came out first too?

  • What? These guys and this song?

  • you and anarchodolly were talking about who stole who's rift and I'm saying which song came out first Nirvana's "come as you are" or KJ "eighties"

  • Eighties came out earlier ^^ nirvana got "problems" cause killing joke wasnt afrait about couverring this song

  • Nirvana released "Nevermind" (The album 'Come As You Are' is on) in 1991.

    Kurt took it.

  • then that should solve this big argument on who stole it from who

  • I can see the resemblance but it's not exact! IMO

  • love this song, love this band....excellent music that never gets old

  • This is so fkn mental!!!Used to love this song...Yep! Still do...I agree,jonslick13..Still feel alive.

  • it feels good!! I fell still alive!
