  • 99 years today since the birth of Eleanor Powell. Thanks Eleanor for all the exhilarating happiness you provided the world with your craft.

  • Merci pour cette publication sur Youtube à propos de " Eleanor Powell"

Remarquez que nous avons pu la voir ici ce 2011/04/01 - RTBF3...

    BELGIQUE-Belgium

Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Greer Garson, Clark Gable, Kathryn Grayson, Leslie Caron, Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Doris Day, Ann Miller, Ann Sothern, Esther Williams, Debbie Reynolds, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Powell

  • It is not true. Ann Miller said as much on a Turner Station interview!! There are several places on the internet that talk about the publicity stunt. Ellie learned to tap dance wearing 50 lb weights on each side as a 16 year old. Her low rapid fire tapping was the result. Ann was 10 years younger then Ellie and was likely indeed the fastest dancer in her era. Ellie was retired then. Ellie did not dance with male partners very often partly because she had to slow down for them such as Fred.

  • the picture with Eleanor with the flowers, second from last, i have the original, and it is autographed.

  • Lovely tribute, EP2007! Say, can you tell me more about the stills at 2:26, 2:31, and 2:38? It looks like EP is with Jeanette McDonald in the last one. Is that correct? Great pics and wonderful song. Love to hear Ellie singing.

  • I also disagree withthe above. Ann Miller was great but------Not greater than Eleanor Powell. She did not rely on her contortionist moves. They were just part of the dance she gave us. Did you see her in Rosalie when she dances down the drums. Just tap dancing but what tap dancing. She was queen of tap and no one has equalled her since.

  • I adore this song so much, but can't locate it anywhere. where did you get it from?

  • I can't remember at all, but I have the audio file, would you people like me to upload it for you all to download?

  • that would be amazing, if it's not too much trouble!

  • Hey guys, I'm uploading the file as I type and will send it to you very soon!

  • Go to this video description in 'about this video' and you will find an update with a link where you can find this Eleanor Powell song ready to download.

  • It was from a revue featuring Powell called AT HOME ABROAD in 1935 on Broadway and directed by believe it or not Vincente Minnelli. This was recorded in 1935 by Tommy Dorsey with Powell. Home this Helps.. i googled it and tracked it down..

  • Yep, Vincente Minnelli. It was great show, very funny, I read some reviews a long time ago from the papers of the time.

  • Fascinating to see this. My mother was her 'stand-in'. Many of these stills I have from my Mom's big book of all the films she worked in.

  • did she do toe tap, or who is that girl in the now deleated video of nightclub tap that looks like by the sound of the music it was from broadway melody 1929?

  • What a blessing to enjoy her talent. Life is short...

  • simply put she was the best

  • She was great with Astaire, but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Ann Miller was a better tapper than Powell. Powell although technically amazing, relied too much on bizarre contortionist sequences during her dances.

  • I beg to differ but Fred Astair himself said she was the best tap dancer and his favorite partner because only she could keep up with him on the dance floor and sometimes he had to struggle to keep up with her. That is quite an endorsement for the best. Sorry although good Ann Miller doesn't match up to Eleanor.

  • Could she tap 300 times a MINUTE? And not only that, could she do it while twirling/spinning in circles? Astaire said he loved working with Powell, but although he had two numbers with Miller, that was eight years after his work with Powell, when no doubt Miller could out tap him, so it's likely he asked for a slower number w/her. Also Astaire said Hayworth was his favorite partner.

  • @dannybex If you see the Ann Miller interview on Turner Network Ann says Ellie was the better dancer. She was Ann's hero. The 300x's a minute was a publicity stunt (her agent.) They called EP machine gun Ellie and Ann admitted she was the faster. Ellie did things NO other dancer could do male or female.Fayard Nicholas oft times called Ellie the best as did a LONG list of others including Fred. She was the 1st female rhythm dancer and had a huge array of extremely difficult dance steps.

  • @hajune Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. Naturally Powell was an idol of Miller's, but I would guess Miller was being humble & respectful. 300/minute might have been good publicity, but it was true. And if indeed Powell was 'the faster', I'd love to see a clip where she is in fact tapping faster than Miller.

  • @dannybex. As a basketball scout I always tried to monitor speed , dexterity etc. It is all but impossible to do so with dancers. They are not always tapping as fast as they could and tap sounds were dubbed in. The closest we got was Ellie's Matador dance and compared to Ann Miller. Ep Was definitely faster but there are to many issues to figure just how much.Ann went to seances to contact EP. She claimed she was able too do so.

  • Please, could someone direct me to the user who 3 months ago uploaded that clip from Follow Thru where Eleanor Powell was very young, coming down from the ceiling on a big chair? Thanks. It was taken down by youtube, but I need to contact the user who uploaded it. I can't remember his/her name. I can't live without that video, I'm desperate. Thank you.

  • That was great. I didn't expect to hear her start tapping at the end there--wonderful surprise! I'm sorry to hear your other account was removed by YouTube. I watched quite a lot of the videos.

  • well, look at it this way, she was born into this planet and we still enjoy her charm and talent, she still provides us with happiness after so many years, and this will be the case for the future when we will disappear but future generations will keep learning from her and being inspired. My! that is priceless. I'm glad I shared planet earth with her for a while when I was a toddler and she was still alive.

  • Thanks for uploading more ELLIE photos. How sad am I now, that ELLIE passed away 25 years ago today February 11th. She was and always will be WONDERFUL. I love you ELLIE. God Bless - CRY CRY CRY CRY
