Listening to this song, I can't help but wonder: just how in the hell does one go about composing something like this? Where do you start? It's so fine-tuned, yet you can feel the breathing room Mike left himself for instrument solos -- and it all comes together as if it was predetermined, like it couldn't have been recorded any other way.
Oh, and this song has by far one of the most heart-poundingly tense climaxes out there. When that rhythm hits and the song winds up, never fails to impress.
get your mind right.. find an hour of your life ..to yourself... shut yourself into a dark room and listen listen listen..the world becomes abetter place
Let's get things straight. The music from Ommadawn is beyond the reach of any human being. God himself created it. Mike Oldfield was chosen to be God's channel. There is no other explanation. Pure bliss !!!
@GusFogle Amarok is fantastic, but Ommadawn remains the more cohesive masterpiece. I live in hope that Oldfield could still produce something as good as either of them.
The second half of Ommadawn Pt.1 was, and always will be, the track that inspires me most.
It's almost impossible to explain how amazing this album is. Because of its origins, its dark production story, and its overall brilliance, Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield is my favourite album of all time.
Probably the greatest of all modern guitarists...and that's underselling all the other instruments he plays, the (then futuristic) multitracking and his superb composition...blissful listening...
2:45 Bliss starts here; for me this is the climax of the whole peice. Those trance-like drums, soothing vocals and the unearthly synthesiser compine to make something more than the sum of their parts. It makes me feel like i'm at the heart of reality... or something
@Nazgul8111 I'd LOVE this to be played at my funeral! The Northumbrian pipes, the musical orgasm [the sun breaking through the clouds] just before the finale- this music has such an amazing spiritual quality.
@WeTheStrange Ah, great to hear that. Happily im not the only1 :D Indeed the end of the track should be the end of my life. The last guitar-note as my last breath.
Only the mere thought of it would make it worth to die for.
Hearing this piece for the first time was like discovering 'music' for the first time. That is sound used to evoke emotions and thought - or simply to tickle the mind. It would be hard for anyone to find the 'source' for this music, outside Mr. Oldfield's fertile Creating Mind.
24 years ago i was tripping and heard this lovepiece the whole night long ,over and over again, till the morning sunset and it gave my live a wonderfull direction. thanks to mr. oldfield
Began by listening to Tubular Bells and then found Ommadawn in 1977. Incredible music that touches my soul! Listen if you dare, but take time to listen.
'Mike Oldfield'...(and another master).. 'Rory Gallagher' we're both left out of The Rolling Stones Mag's...top 100 guitarists of all time list. Go figure.!!
@aussieangie Hey thanks for mentioning another great artist I haven't heard of, 'Rory Gallagher'... It's gettin' harder and harder to hear about the REAL music these days when they seem to be getting even further burried under piles of shitty artists, it's people like you that make my day... :)
I had the Ommadawn records in the early 80`s and i am looking fr a song, second side of second record - only drums, starting very silent but becoming more and more intensive! Ican not find it! Please help!!!
I think what makes Ommadawn, Tubular Bells (1 especially), Incantations, Music of the Spheres, Songs of Distant Earth, etc. so great is that they are timeless and enduring. They arose from a musical genius who was so original, and it's hard to pin any one of them down and say, "That's so 70s, so 80s so 90s, so Noughties, etc.. His greatness just goes on and on. Fathers introduce his music to their sons, and they to their sons, etc. Mike Oldfield's music will last into the 22nd century.
one of the truly great but under-rated guitarists. My cousin played with him and Sally when they were busking/bumming around Bristol and the SW in the early 70's. Mad as box of frogs though.
Brings back such sweet memories of the seventies.I once woke up to this in a barn myself and a friend were renting from someone.I'd over slept and my friend Phil put it on loudly, I hadn't a clue where I was as I was facing a wall, all I was aware of was this amazing sound.....I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Thanks for posting this, and thanks Phil, if you ever drop by, for that incredible experience.
As some of the other comments in all of the Ommadwn part this/that suggest, I used to believe that this music represented that life's meaning has some higher purpose or more gentle nature. I still do to some degree but not as much as I used to.
But all of the parts of both TB and O as individual units are very good music and as a collective represent to me that there still is a fantasy world (or mentality) that should be maintained in one's own head.
I own Tubular Bells and Ommadawn on LP. My brother used to own Hergest Ridge on LP. He also owns 1 or 2 other albums on cassette tape or CD. I haven't really heard them enough to comment on them but I do know I didn't like HG. TB and O are PHENOMENAL.
I try to "zone out" whenever I get the chance to sit long enough to play either one alol the way through without interruption (both sides of either one in 1 uninterrupted sitting).
Bought this album when it first came out - Yes I'm that old. :)
The first 2:50 of this excerpt are really just a transition to the meaty bit for me. When the drums and vocal take over, I'm in a transport of joy, my cats hate it. I can't help chanting along. Cats - 'Daddy's at it again, paws over ears time'. :)
Love this, all of Ommadawn, including part 2. This part, from 6.05 is just bringing me to tears everytime. Its such a strong emotional experience to listen to this music. Such power! Music is a language stronger than any spoken word. And MO is one of the demigods of music.
his multi tracked guitars often sound like they DI' ed into the board without an amp. One can't tell if that is a TELE or an SG esp. since he vari speed records the layers of guitars so the tone and pitch is manipulated.
while i was in the Marines, i bought this the moment it came out. (i consider it as a metaphor for all life, personally.) i had my stereo in my locker, with my headphone cord running through a small hole in the door. the cord reached about 20-30 feet to my headphones; when i went to sleep, i had it set on repeat play. . .never got tired of listening to it. and after almost forty years, i'm STILL not tired of one single note. Oldfield's a genius.
This section of Ommadawn is one of my favourite pieces of music ever, ever, ever... ever. :) I bought the album when it first came out... Great... Outstanding... Awesome... Very good old chap. ;)
"The cat is in the kitchen, drinking milk. I am the fool who's laughing loud."
I was used to listen to Ommadawn while watching The Day After in a way Kansas City was nuked while the part from 7:08 was played. I still shit bricks to that O_o°
I had this music with me in hospital, during two nasty surgeries. It was wonderfully relaxing and soothing. It has been one of my favorite compositions since 30 years. Love it!
There's a slightly different translation in wiki, apperently based on Mike's statements in his Autobiography "Changeling":
"Daddy's in bed, The cats drinking milk, I'm an idiot, And I'm laughing"
It says that Mike asked irish singer Clodagh Simmonds (the femmale voice in this piece) to write anything in Gaelic, not caring much about the meaning, just the sound... and this came out!
i did'n know that mike has already written his autobiography. i listened "ommadawn" at random two weeks ago somewhere and i remembered that it was one of my favourites in the time when i finished school nearly 30 years ago. in between i found somewhere in wiki that "ommadawn" comes from gaelic "amadán" , which means "idiot" or "fool". and because the word echoes in line 3 and 4: the first translation may be the better. nevertheless, once again: thanks! and many greetings from istanbul to ???

Yeah, my thoughts exactly for a few of the recent posters who say this album is better than Tubular Bells or any other work.
The female singers that come in after 2:45 make this song sound like people are trying to introduce you to a higher plain or something like that.
Actually I get that from the beginning of the recorder solo at 2:15.

While the evocative timeless riff of Tubular Bells is an obvious classic - I believe Ommadawn is a finer body of work.
