In my opinion, this is the way it should be performed (or at least the closest). People forget that Juliet is barely 14. Romeo is only a few years older. Teen angst and lust are alive and well in their hearts. Just because Shakespeare wrote with such beautiful language doesn't mean these children share adult love. Its angsty. Awkward. And funny. The play is tragic, but this scene (along with a number of others) is a perfect opportunity for the hilarity of natural humility. Well done, I say. :)
Mr. Romeo takes his line, too literally. They turned it into a comedy. He would've been great, if he wasn't too much. He already has a great soothing voice, it's just his movements, and exaggeration. Poor thing too, could have been a lovely play.
Absolutely no chemistry between them. And why are they YELLING everything!? It's meant to be the dead of night and Juliet said herself if they found Romeo there they'd kill him, yet she's basically screaming every second word.
The guy playing Romeo is excellent, but the only good thing about Juliet that I could see was the scream. The scream was perfect. Aside from that, the monologue was absolutely slaughtered.
Okayyyyyyy? I think the Romeo is too over-reacting. The one who plays Juliet sounds a little drunk. Gentleness, love, and devotion must be present in their voices. I can't find these. I like the fact that they put themselves in their character but... they put a little TOO much. Zefirelli's version is the best in my opinion.
This Romeo is awful.. Too many points of focus! Who directed this? Why is he looking all around at nothing?? Why does Juliet sound drunk???? What is the artistic angle here?
LOL i was just thinking the same thing... i've seen several stage productions of this and this is one of the worst. It sounds like their trying to hard to act lol :)
this juliet seems too aggressive, juliet is a thirteen year old who wants to please her parents. she's not the type to scream at someone who's nursed her since infancy, especially not so early in the play
What is so unfortunate about this scene is that they have removed any relationship between themselves to their characters, and are simply showing off their vocal range and abilities. They have zero connection, and are simply acting rather than actually developing a relationship.
I agree with everything but the acting statement, for acting is not lying. That is what they are doing here: lying and pretending. If they were acting, their characters WOULD develop a relationship.
Romeo is like a little 5-year old on sugar!!! Look he is all over the plays jumping and fluttering aroun, while Juliet is slightly scary, but very dominate!! However they do work and as for this scene no words can descirbe it but Romeo, Romeo!!
Dude pretty good. Its theatre u tools, not bloody Hollywood, u HAVE 2 exaggerate or the audience will lose interest. U spend 3 hours in a theatre listening to bloody shakespearean language.
yes, you do have to exaggerate, and the shakespearean language isn't too difficult to learn. but, however, despite the fact that you must exaggerate, this juliet didn't really deliver this scene properly, especially her monolouge. it's supposed to be romantic, not shouting and well, scary. the actress seemed to have a certain attitude about her that wasn't very appealing or juliet-esque.
Thats right, i was thinking of Romeo 2. But Shakespear plays depend heavily on the language, what evers on their mind comes out in words, and the audience dont need 2 pay to much attention to the actor because he doesnt have 2 act too well.
that is where differ. it doesn't really depend heavily on language; it kind of is how they spoke back then. it's old english. about the acting not having to be good? um, it's shakespeare. and even if it wasn't, i don't think you'd want to blow your money on some crappy actor. people usually dislike bad acting in plays or movies.
The girl playing juliet is awful.. She sounds manic half the time.. she isnt even feeling the emotion of the words. Juliet is meant to be gentle, but firm.. not shouting and intimidating :/ romeo is better.
ok... woah... um, they're a little bit aggro aren't they? Hmm.. maybe I'm too used to watching the Baz Luhrmann version of the film (as we're studying it for english) but this seems really weird... They're meant to be innocent and young and in new love not yelling at the night...
