  • This just IMMEDIATELY sets the tone of the show, and gets me so excited. Powerful music. Always shall remain epic!

  • this is intro whif wending musick :)

  • I used to fiddle on a roof... Then I fell off the roof and died :'(

  • I'm a singer, dancer, actress. I also play a little violin. As a performer I feel like my favorite part of the show should be Matchmaker but, it's always been this violin solo. Thumbs up if the violin is the best instrument on earth. :D

  • 1:25 - 2:02 :')

  • Love this movie, one of my romantic and favorites.

  • Just in case some of you didn't know...The world famous violin soloist, Issac Stern stood on a roof and fiddled the entire instumental half of the opening credits to the 1971 film.

  • @Mir11Mir Are you by any chance jewish?

  • 2:20-end is best

  • Wait John Williams did music for this movie? Well I'll be a skinny white kid.

  • @Videot01

Sort of. Most of the music (like over 90%) was of course taken from the show, but there are some differences. This solo is new, the "intermission music" is new, and some parts, like the "Wedding Dance" were changed a bit from the stage version.

  • im playing the fiddler in my school productions of fiddler on the roof! Will I have to dance to this?

  • I have to play this in our school production. It's not as hard as it sounds; there's just some tricky rhythms and fast parts. But the notes aren't hard. :)

  • HURRAH!

  • Absolutely wonderful

  • I want to learn to play the violin so I can play like that someday....it's very good music.

  • je cherche version fraçaise de film qlq'un peu m'aide

  • @haytamlive

Ou habites-tu? Ici dans les Etats-Unis, on peut acheter le version francais avec le DVD...

  • 2:24 - 2:53

  • I used to fiddle on a roof.....then I was a rich man.

  • @spock101010 l'chaim

  • @spock101010

I used to be a fiddler on the roof, like you, but then i took a tradition to the knee.

  • @spock101010 LOL thats funny.

  • @sprite4asia 10 now

  • the sheet music is sooooo impossible!!!!!!

  • You can get the sheet music for this? Where? I need to get it!

  • I knew it had to be Issac. One of our finest.

  • yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

  • I`M atheist but if I had to `choose` a religion for what ever reason, it would be Judaism but I dont so I wont, great film.

  • This a beautiful, sacred religion. For all you complete idiots who think other wise or think the Jewish people are less than, then it is YOU that is LESS THAN!!

These people endured what NO human being should ever endure. They love their families and they love God...............

  • 9 people fell of the f**kin roof...

  • @caliber950

    they needed some more "Traditions!"

  • @DCdabest TRAAADIIIITIOOONS! TRADITIONS!.....TRAAADIIIITIOOOOOOOOONS! TRADITIONS!... *pa-pa-para-pa-pa-para-paraparapaaa*

  • @caliber950

    hahahaha

    *quote from Tevye*

  • @caliber950 lol that was hilarious

  • RIP, Isaac Stern: one of the greatest violinists ever.

  • I am Mormon, but this movie makes me wish I was Jewish, lol. Yet, I believe Christ was the Messiah and I couldnt stop eating my number 3 from McDonalds because its not kosher :))

  • Very nice song.

    Greetings from South Africa.

  • have been playing this on loop while essay-writing and the lone sound of the violin somehow clears the mind of all mental fog. LOVE. plus when the jewish song kicks in, it really lifts the spirit. :)

  • so cool i love it

  • the people who dislike this piece of excellent music should be killed by the Nazis..

  • awesome. as a non jew. i love all of this. if onnly thoise $#%@ arabs saw this before any peace b.s.

  • Not a snob or anything are we? Jeesh! have a good life, little girl.

  • Love it. Could listen to this all day.

  • When I was young, I though tthat not only did Isaac Stern play this music, but that he was teally the violinist fiddling on the rooftop. Pretty tough for a 60-year old concert-violnist it must have been, lol!

  • @Mireiah11

Is there a difference between jewish 2:30 and christian 2:30? how about muslim 2:30?

  • Comment removed

  • @Nibakate Jews and Christian believe in the God of the Old Testament. Islams say the do, but the God of the OT is Jesus' dad. They don't think He is, so must be another god. Check the book of Enoch, there's plenty of fallen angels that stuck around looking for fans, so who knows?

  • @MiloArc jews don't believe that jesus is the son of the "old testament god", and we only believe there is one god, so there is no question.

  • @defyinggravity999 Whatever, you kinda missed my point.

  • @MiloArc Maybe so, but just don't going around talking about things you clearly don't know much about.

  • @defyinggravity999 -- Because YOU missed my point I know nothing about it? Whatever...

  • @MiloArc actually neither Jews or Muslims dont see Jesus as Gods son. Muslims recognize Jesus as a Messiah, mention more than Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) on the contrary Jews dont regard Jesus as a messiah, they are still waiting for a Messiah to come.

  • @HOTDesigirl --- I know that already. You guys missed the point. But thanks for letting me know. Next time I'll writer very plainly and piss everyone off. Thanks.

  • @Mireiah11 What is the name of the song?

  • @bonz190 Prologue And "Tradition" & Main Title

    Tevye, Isaac Stern And Orchestra

    Album: Fiddler On The Roof

    Label: EMI Records

  • best ever :D

  • I have seriously never heard anything in my life that I loved more then this. I just get goosebumps. It is beautiful to me.

  • Shatner was in "The Brother's Karamazov".

  • @diriambino Mother Karhma will haunt you: "What goes around, comes around."

  • I really love this movie! I've watching it several times and ever love it, more and more! (sorry by my poor english! it's not my mother language!)

  • @EschetChail the movie is good, but if you ever get a chance to see it live, it is awesome. I saw the movie first and thought it was great, but it was so much more impressive on a live stage.

  • @cdeeb20 wow, you ever heard of the 20th century much? ...there was that whole holocaust thing and the whole WWII thingy where millions of people including Americans sacrificed their lives to stop that Hitler guy... ringing any bells? All so you could have the freedom to talk about shooting jews...nice one jackwad

  • @diriambino70

Wow I knew that some liberal Billy Bob American like yourself would come on here and bitch abput poor Jews when I left the comment. You people never get old. I love leaving comments like this just to fuck with little Jewish arse kissers like youself. XD

  • Wonderful

  • why was i expecting william shatner...

  • 2:21 is so epic! This is one of the best scores around!

  • I can see Norman Jewison saying 'Get me a good fiddler for the opening' -- and whoever it was, comes back with the legendary, incredible Isaac Stern, who elevates the piece to a new standard...

  • @hackfamily2011

He didn't elevate the piece to a new standard, he set the original standard - this solo was not originally in the stage version, John Williams wrote it specially for the movie.

  • @EuphrasieF Good call--it's all the more astounding.

  • @EuphrasieF --Wow, you're good!

  • quite an opening for a movie!!!epic!

  • Eargasm 8D

  • @missmuggledetector couldn't have described it better!

  • The guy could play the fiddle.

  • Trying to learn this on my Trombone, it's been quite a task

  • lots of love for all involved in the production, and those also who also love it.

  • 2:24 is lovely, but 1:05 to 1:16 is so beautiful with headphones especially, the way it sounds like falling... if there is other violin this lovely in this same spirit, please comment here. i'd love to find more music with this feeling.

  • i play violin. i really wanna learn this

  • Aw this brings back memories :') love it <3

  • My favorite part is 2:24. I always get an adrenaline rush from its intense beauty.

  • sounds like my head hairs at war with one another..greys v,s blacks

  • On this part at school i thought that the movie ended on this part, i was wtf!? and the teacher was like okay.... we have no time, so she fast forwarded the "Last 2 minutes"

  • wish i could play that, but i don't know how to do vibrato... ****

  • @TheAlpacaness

Me too. Im working on Vibrato now. If I learn this though, My life will be complete.

  • It's the same music but a different recording than the movie uses. It's nice to hear an alternate take of this great work by Isaac Stern.

  • @cromforever77

Wow, you can't really spell, can you? It's "choir" not "quire" xD

  • Comment removed

  • @cromforever77

    What? I'm not Jewish. o_o

Anyway it's fine that you have an opinion, I was just being the geek that I am and was correcting your spelling, because that kind of thing bothers me and I just can't bring myself to let it go by. :x

  • @cromforever77

And sorry if that sounded offensive, I didn't mean it to be. :P

  • Did you know:

This was the first film John Williams received an Oscar for. He would go on to win four more: JAWS, Star Wars Ep. IV, E.T., and Schindler's List.

I am not sure how much of this particular piece is from the original play and how much is Williams' work.

  • @dzcomposer The theme in the opening comes from Jerry Bock's original music in the play. Williams decided he needed additional music for the opening scenes and the credits, so he wrote an original cadenza and a set of variations. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether Issac Stern created some of his violin cadenzas for his solo - but the bulk of the work certainly was Williams. (He would do the same almost 20 years later for Itzhak Perlman for Schindler's List - another great violin work.)

  • Me encanta este musical.

    Fantástico.

  • Me encanta este musical.

  • 1:40 to 2:00 is so amazing.

  • iwish i could play that for solo and ensemble or a senior solo.

  • This song is amazing as-is, but one is able to appreciate it more if you play the violin. You can just know how difficult it must have been to play this wonderful piece. :)

  • Man I'm getting shivers.

  • Wow an impressive piece.

  • Anyone know where you can find the music to this piece? I have been looking everywhere!

  • @MiloArc me too! but if u find out could u please let me know too? i'll do the same too!!

    thankss :)

  • This is amazing. I saw the musical live with Topol one of my favorite parts was with the fiddler. Thank you for finding this song.

  • Most amazing movie ever. Every time I see it it blows my mind. I don't tend to care for musicals much but this one is absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for posting it!

  • Isaac Stern is a violin god.

  • god bless john williams and alexander courage for arranging and orchestrating this already amazing music.

  • this is amazing. chills every time I listen to it.

  • He was playing the hell out of that violin.

  • Simply amazing. <3

  • This brings tears to my eyes. Absolutely beautiful.

  • My favortie musical ever!!!

  • No se cuantas veces he visto esta hermosa película!! todo me gusta, música, excelentes actuaciones, en fin todo!! es una pelicula de colección!!

  • This is Isaac Stern, correct? It is absolutely fabulous. In every production of fiddler on the roof I've seen, the Violin has been out of tune on its opening entrance in second position. Oh well, I can come home and listen to this. Gorgeous.

  • i wish this came in a ringtone....

  • @arivas713 what i do is i take my phone (dunno if your model has it) but i just take the recording option, and record the song and then save it and take the saved file and use it as a ringtone option. The quality might not be amazing... but its better than nothing :P

  • @arivas713 Well, you can always use video 2 mp3 dot net (without the blanks)

  • Chills... Good times... Thx ever so for posting this. 

  • This is the best violin peice Iv'e ever heard. I remember watching this movie over and over again when I was six and being mesmerized by the musical scores, especialy this one. I just love 1:15-1:59!
