  • Michael McDonald always sings with his eyes closed.

  • Gosh! This brings back the wonderful days, of my middles school days. Michale McDonald has a wonderful soulful voice, and through him many other came to love this terrific band. I wish they would have a reunion tour so sad many have past away. May they rest in peace.

  • Is that a guitar cabinet mic he's singing through? Nice...

  • This song is HELLA.

  • There's nothing like a song that brings back memories, makes you smile or cry,

lets you think about an old love, or a night you danced till you're feet hurt.

This song is All of the above. Thanks Guys!

  • Silver fox in his prime!

  • the one with the heavy mustache is definetly the doobie founder (name wise) lol

  • Michael McDonald has such a soulful sound. This brings me back to my childhood

  • Michael McDonald is so smooth. He just glides in to those high notes with the easy of a slant 6. Songs written back in those days had some depth. Got you to wondering what was going thru their minds when those lyrics popped out. Thanks Michael. You are still one of a kind.

  • Miss thm Days when music had you driftin.. going to the best places in your mind!

  • very marvin influeince

  • I dunno...Doobie's look don't fit the music. Maybe part of the reason Mike went solo?

  • Never get tired of this tune. One of the greats for sure!

  • This song is killer when the doobies did it. Backup vocals have yet to be matched by any other non-doobie version

  • i get goosebumps from those voices when i was a kid the most beautiful sound i ever heard and i'm 33 years

  • the gal they are singing about has been one lucky bitct:she has had him twice in life, and the other one who adores him...always was giving him answers in history, (the one he loves is so fake...she still hates him loving her! wish I was her;) and he would always have history solved<3! I am alone waiting..guess maybe a lot of dye, and fingernail stuff needed, why doesn't he see:( guess he isn't worth anything:( But if he would see me, I will share more than history..I'll give him life!:)

  • It's truly magical!

  • I was telling someone the other day that this song sounds a little like the song "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree. Both great songs anyway. Cool.

  • Great tune. I just noticed there is a part where it sounds like he says "...The white man has the power...".

  • @topperlongo Lets not get racial with music now...what he says is "the Wise man" has the power ...keep it simple Stupid...

  • They don't make them like they used too!

  • i'm 2 years old and totally dig this song

  • im 15

  • yutube you have a place in my life what a fool believes that the wiseman has the powers.Right?Sending me somwhere in my long ago.Listening to lovely songs seeng great vidioes others do.I thank you those that could.

  • just wanna say I am a musician who listens to all kinds of music - rock, metal, classical, acoustic - michael mcdonald is as smooth as they get

  • @michael88863 You said it, Great voice indeed.

  • @michael88863 so smooth!

  • i'm a big Michael McDonald fan

  • @rocker53zero fuck you, you worthless maggot

  • I don't like the Doobie Bros. with M.McD on vocals. so there!

  • was he born with that beard......

  • Una joya!!! :D

  • I get it and it has taken 30 years to do so!

  • this was the #1 song the week I was born :)

  • @cyrinius1979 Me too! :D Are you following the trend on Facebook?

  • @cyrinius1979 Is your birthday the week of April 8-14? Mine is April 10th, 1979. lol

  • @RuthC79 My birthday is also April 10, 1979. About to post this on FB, lol

  • Wow!! What great upload, I bought this 45 rpm when it came out in 1977 or 1972 or whenever it was, I prolly still have it in the stacks of old 45's. I never did know the lyrics until now. I've been singing them wrong for 30 years :)

  • Am I the only one who kept expecting someone to start singing "Ba-dee-ah, dancing in September ... "?

  • Those background vocals are so incredible and the more I listen and look it almost looks like it's dubbed in with a track. If you listen to the last chorus when Michael is singing over the harmony instead of being a part of it--it still sounds like his voice is still in the harmony part too. Patrick and the bass player make it look TOO easy. But I don't know--it's probably them and if so--WOW--who else can sing high harmony that good live? Not too many.

  • this was back in the days where wearing bowling shirts was cool

  • does every 16 year old come on here and say something to the effect of..."man, i like this old music too."

This is music. Lada Gaga is a freaky disco track.

  • 1:55-the bassist remembered how high he really is! haha

  • @geistert Skunk Baxter

  • This is a classic! I didn't get it until I myself might have been that fool in my adult life. Heartbreaking, catchy and makes you want to shake your groove thang! This live concert video is pretty cool also.

  • You could not go anywhere without hearing this song back in 1977 or whenever this song first dropped. Times were better then than they are now. God bless.

  • @ mellotronage, thank you. I'll go and buy that CD. And yes, I know im one of the few who still buy CDs! Lol - I love reading the linear notes and being able to touch my music. I have an ipod but most of my music is still on CDs. I have such a huge collection of CDs so its gonna take a while to put it all on my ipod.

  • I love this song, its 1 of my all time favorites. What I dont love is that I have a Doobie Brothers greatest hits album and a Michael Mcdonald gratest hits album and this song isnt on either. Why do artists & their labels put out greatest hit c.d.'s and leave out the best song?? I dont have my own computer so youtube on my phone is the only way I get the songs I dont have.

  • @PezzodaNovanta1 Well, the good thing here is that you could purchase the CD ( Minute By Minute) and listen to the whole album as it was originally intended to be listened to. It's got great tracks on it, and the first three songs are a solid 1-2-3 punch ! Do it before they don't manufacture CD's any longer... which is sooner than we think.

  • @PezzodaNovanta1 It's on the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits vol.2!

  • JUST AWESOME!!!!!!

  • I remember this track being played on the radio before I set off for school in February 1979

  • hahaha, im only 19 and i like this song. im open minded to all types and generations of music

  • @Gundoggak47 check out Rush Bravado!

  • @Gundoggak47 Nobody cares. Move on.

  • @Gundoggak47 congratulations, we're all out of awards unfortunately :/

  • @Gundoggak47 congrats now gtf off the internet

  • @Gundoggak47 I'm 19 as well. I don't really think of music has being specific to a generation. The way I see it, if its good, it timeless.

  • @Gundoggak47 Congrats

  • @Gundoggak47 ....why do you have to state your age? Do you always start a sentence that way? Why?

  • otras de mis mejores canciones, esta no se olvidan ¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • I have no idea why this song is one of my favorites of all-time. Just brings a good feeling inside of me. Probably because its one of the first songs I remember hearing.

  • No lie. I saw the Doobies perform in 97. The average age of the concert goer there had to be 50.

Yet when the boys took the stage, the smell of chronic weed was as strong as a Cypress Hill show. Doobie Brothers forever!

  • The late 1960s, the 1970s and some into the 1980s and then music died. Those great days will probably never be back with the crap performers we have today. How about a little Marilyn Manson - oh puke!!!!! Bring back the good music please!!!!!!!

  • @MrFBCBSALES dont sell the 90's short. 90's hip hop was classic and 90's alternative was really good. 90's grunge was pretty good too even though it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. From about 2000+ music has gone way down hill tho. There are a few gems here and there but overall its garbage.

I find myself either listening to 60-70's rock, love songs etc, Bob Marley, or 90's music. I even listen to pre 60's stuff. I'm 26 but I really appreciate a wide range of music.

  • @MrFBCBSALES I agree with you..60's..70's..and 80's were the best time for music..Now everything has gone right to the shit house

  • Blue eyed soul

  • Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Michael McDonald went a long way towards making the 70's awesome.

  • What a sentimental fool he is

  • Lyrics.. lyrics.. Damn I miss lyrics with good music.

  • @Zerubba

It's complicated. Most music before the 90s was done by 'adults'. However, I do not recommend 'growing up'. You know?

  • excelenttt

  • You can listen to boatloads of live perfromances and not hear vocal harmonies that are this difficult executed so flawlessly. Really really impressive.

  • one of the best of all times

  • marble mouth..

  • it's good, to have, a little Doobie, in your funk. ask George Clinton!! thank you, Doobie Brothers. thank you, Michael McDonald.

  • Tree? I can't speak for everyone but I am glad you are into the 90s music. You just don't get it,,,,

  • Robbie Dupree took this and made it better. Nothing on McDonald though :)

  • Realmente e um som para toda a vida Danuzio. Forte abraço aos amantes da boa música internacional.

  • so crazy man, Michael McDonald mite as well been one o the Doobie's.

  • Man, the bassist's pants are tight...

  • I got sent here (Tangentally) By Jeph Jacques. And suddenly I am even happier to be a 90's baby that never had to deal with music like this.

    Heh.

  • @treeformlol No, you had to deal with worse from of 2000 and on. XD

Early to mid 90s kid myself, but I'll pick this stuff over any of today's offers any day.

  • Needs more bass

  • I must say, of all the hits The Doobie Brothers did, this is the one I can agree with the most. I'd much rather have wisdom than intelligence: I take it they would agree. Nice job, Guys!

  • I think Skunk actually passes out at some point from sheer boredom.

  • once again I am quilty of adoring Micheals voice and the soul within him.

  • just having a little giggle - just finished listening to long train running - love this song but they all seem half asleep after long train running lol

  • This song is the "younger sister" of Steal Away by Robbie Dupree, isn't?

  • It kind of became too much of Michael's group after this song, and they came to hate the song, this whole album they began to regret, I love it! Everyone in my family loved this album and so did the buying public, "Minute By Minute" is beautiful... The previous Doobie Brother' Music songs are good as well...

  • He has a good voice but it's nothing like the gritty vocals of the original singer. FUA who disagree!

  • this was my parents' era but I love this song. That voice is just awesome.

  • Jessie i see u

  • Awesome song and band.

  • Jenna Maroney has such a great voice!

  • Everything was going great until Rerun bootlegged that damn concert.

  • @Grapedrankstank LOL!!! Wow, that brings back memories of What's Happening. I remember that episode!!

  • @Grapedrankstank No Roger! No Rerun! No rent!!

  • @Grapedrankstank LMAO why u have to bring that up, too funny....

  • Ooooh, Doobies! July 5th, 1980...those80s were the best years of my life! And this was the theme song to it!

  • Im 53, and used to ADORE this song. Am from St Helens, Tony Fyne wud play us out with it (among others) at the Geraldo (later Glassbridge Club). But. I am SICKENED at the relentless association with current musical tat. Those today who were same age as I then wont know who the HELL the DOOBIE BROS were. . . . .

  • Som pra toda a vida... muito bom!

  • Hands down, one of the best soul singers this world will ever see.

  • siempre me a gustao esta cancion me trae muchos recuerdos d la sec. en Morelia

  • !!! Ya lo agregue en mi playlist " Para no olvidar"... Inmejorable e infaltable

  • I couldn't believe it at first, when I heard Michael Jackson did backup vocals for this song. Great song :)

  • really a good song

  • how lucky i feel to hear what michael and the doobies sounded like live in the 70's. amazing. just love it. it does have a sad tinge, but it is an encouraging, an edifying song, for it does not have to be that way. you can learn from others, if only on a subliminal level, but even that can be beneficial to ward one way from foolish actions and choices in one's life.

  • I'm pretty sure Kenny Loggins cowrote this song. Amazingly complex song that comes out sounding so sweetly simple.

  • This song is pure magic, and what a voice, the man has soul.

  • music required talent int he 70's .

  • Amen Brother!! Sweeeeeeet!!

  • woooop real music maan

  • haha, Michael McDonald looks just like one of our middle school teachers here. Our teacher would always get pissed-off when somebody would talk in his class, then he'd stare bloody-murder at them, and hand out detention!! Looking back on it now, makes me laugh

  • wat a classic , jst a super song , also remember the latre jimmy stokley and his band exile who wer big at the time . god rest ur soul jimmy , thanx for classic kiss u all over . rip u legend

  • @estherlp67 WOW!!! This flips me straight back to the first time I heard it when it first came out. Thanks for a great upload.

  • OH I JUST LOVE THIS SONG MICHEALS VOICE HAS JUST GOT BETTER AND BETTER

  • Que maravilla...que manera de traer recuerdos de mi juventud!!!

  • funny how he gott this song even better lately...life is something. he sounds just as good today as back here in the day!!!! Now that's talent....many people can be hot and talented at 13, 18, 21, 32, but how many can say they still got that fyre over the age of 50?

  • hehehe 1:54 .

  • la mejor cancion de ellos

  • This was playing this early morning when I switched on the radio and it is making my day. So I have emailed another song to a real good friend that I haven't seen in too long telling him; 'I'ld really like to see him tonight' and sung by The Doobie Brother's. Modern life has it's advantages.

  • Anyone have a better copy or the original? This would be great on hd or blu-ray. I like this live version better than others. Thanks

  • @italianospeed I dont think they had HD or Blu-Ray in 1979.

  • @tylertincher This I know. Tons of music and movies are remastered for HD or Blu-Ray everyday. Technically not "HD" but a huge improvement over the televised or cassette recording. I'm just looking for a better copy than a low quality youtube upload.

  • You can tell everyone in the band BESIDES McDonald hated playing this song.

  • The Doobies were shit without MM and that's not up for debate.

  • the lyrics and songwriting alonside with mikes vocals is what made the doobies. LUV em

  • Today's music sucks because MUSIC IS NOT THE ISSUE ANYMORE!!! (Hence Lady Gag Gag, etc.) The Doobies- great band, great song.

  • Always liked this one by The DB's. And thanks for the words, 'cause Mike's voice is so deep and intense you can easily drift away and start making up your own words. Good song!!!!

  • love Cornelius Bumpus............Pat is great......Michael makes the song..........these artists send me! So Honored to be a part of this music! Thank you.

  • You know, I wish music was this good again. I miss the 70's when music was music and not the BS that it is today. Who's behind me?

  • @roosevelthighschool That's because that whole generation used to get their asses kicked and no toys!

  • @roosevelthighschool

Right behind you on that roosevelt

  • @roosevelthighschool Preach it brother!!!

  • Should be in the RRHOF !!!!

  • @indbsktbal1 You mean the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

  • @roosevelthighschool i am concerned that your attitude to music reflect a general attitude to life - that nostaliga and alarmism has convinced you that everything good is in the past and that nothing in the future can be good -leading to despair and ennui.

  • @roosevelthighschool If you were a teenager growing up in the 70's Im so jealous! Mannnnn! I would have LOVED to be in high school then.......had to have been a stellar time!

  • @roosevelthighschool Couldn't have said it better myself. You are absolutely right!!!!!!!

  • @roosevelthighschool I am~ *evil look*

  • @roosevelthighschool thank you. I was born in 77 so I love this kind of music, must have been playing non stop while I was in the crib and during my formative years! Much better than the garbage kids today are churning out.

  • Wow what a great voice

  • This stuff is better than what's on the radio nowadays.

  • cool. Show more..-the lyrics!-..but it would be a proposal to some pretty girl who was working at the "old" bank in a hometown and now, a "new" bank in a greater location..(and "if" 300 MILLION could Be Established as an Embassy authority of 307 million Americans!)..Oh what a fool beleives!....yes Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones; as a song "Give Me Shelter!"...."en what the hell they'll jus borrow more!"...deficit ceilings/"trillions"/en "what's for dinner tonight!" with nothing to lose!

  • how can u dislike this song

  • What FOOLS voted down on this song????

  • Love this song great words

  • Crazy vocal range and soul on that guy holy shit

  • Brings back memories of my childhood. They were a great band.

  • @randomrocket100 yeah mine too...I was 15 when they did this...what happend to the music of today? It sucks...no great writers anymore...no pure artists or bands...just alot of american idol crap and they even "sing" the songs of my day...go figure

  • Classic...............

  • I really didn;t like McDonald in the Doobies at all.

  • @abcbraveheart Coming from someone who's only heard the singles off of "Minute by Minute", what were the pre-Mcdonald Doobies like?

  • Classic!!!!!!!!!

  • I like the music but not his voice! It bothers me a lot!

  • I didn't know that Jay leno was a musician back then!!

  • CLASSIC SONG FROM MY TIME, know there will probably be some disagreements about this but that's ok because everyone is entitled to express their opinion negative or positive.

  • This is such a great song even the title is poetic...SING IT YALL!

  • anybody else would surely know , hes watching her go ...........timeless , great band , MM legendry voice , him and the DB perfect match, no more to be said love it

  • MM pre marble mouth - still love these guys!

  • This was a live show. They sound great!

  • Skunk is laughing because these guys couldn't play this live....it's all tracked! Man they are so much better now!!

  • God this is the shizzit.

  • Oh no!!! This guy killed the Doobies!!! A pain and a sin!!!

  • OMG, I'm getting so "nostalgic"... as I use to listen to this on 8-track! : )

  • The rest of the Doobs didn't look very happy, did they?

  • @smokiebird06 Skunk Baxter looks like he's stoned off his skull.

  • Mustache has the poweer! No, really...

  • Is that Michael McDonald as lead singer? Looks kind of like Kenny Rogers to me.

  • 1:56 kkk

  • singer during the 70's & 80's,,, now he is hosting a show every night before 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'

  • I just love michael McDonalds voice..... he can sing to me antime..... Love love love it.....

  • Cool fude on the sofa!

  • THIS IS WHERE JAGGED EDGE GOT THEY SWAGG FROM....

    TREA$URE$.

  • 8 dislikes??? Non McDonald fans LOL \m/

  • I love this song. Reminds me of waking up in the morning, opening the window in my bedroom and watching the lost horses there were behind my house *-*

    Reminds me of my brother.

It makes me so emotional :')

This is so unfair, I should have been born in those amazing years. ♪

  • I think McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote this song. In fact, I'm positive.

The Doobies were great with Mike and without. Reminds me of driving to work every morning...... being a fool.

  • soulful and poignant lyrics talented and creative musicians great music arrangement fantastic vocals harmonies; just don't have that any more

  • First time I heard this song was on Saturday Night Live in '79, I knew this was a hit.

  • When I first heard this song I loved it. You know, the 70's had great music. The Doobie Brothers are just prime examples of how great music was. There was also The Bee Gees and such. Well you catch my drift.
