j agree if it could be fixed... but sometimes they cannot be fixed, or are too old... at that point donation would be good if it is fixable... if unfixable the only thing is to trash it somehow, and this is that case, so they decided to have some fun with it.
who knows. they may have recycled a lot of the server... smashing and grinding something up is the first step in the recycling plant. so they had fun and did it themselves.

Regarding the requests to recycle.
At this time, we had 80 servers that got retired at once. Yes 80! We recycled 78 of them right away and two went into videos and were then recycled.
This is California, don't forget. We recycle everything. To type this comment I am recycling 1's and 0's from a previous message. :)

Well, some of the parts probably could have been recycled - graphics card, processor etc, but fair point made there.
