WOW! I have been looking for this song forever - I haven't heard it since I was about 6 or 7 years old (and, yes, I finally heard it on "Stuck On You")!
I remember when this man lined them up around the block at the Apollo. If you're from back in the day, living in NY like me, you know you had to be good to keep the audience from booing you off the stage. To line them up, around the block to get in, is saying something for his talent.
I love the song Summertime, especially Rod Stewart's version on the Jeff Beck album and Janis Joplin's version, but Rush Limbaugh said that this version is his favorite, and I wanted to check it out, it is very good.
Saw the "Stuck on You" version. Greg Kinneer tries too hard to be Billy Stewart. Nice imitation but George Benson and Louis Armstrong perform the same song with different arrangements. Neither song resembles this one. Ya gotta at least TRY to put your own stamp on it or you may as well do karaoke. BTW, fantastic post.
I was a almost teen, when I heard this, and it was the first record I ever bought. Billy rocked it, and had this little white girl jumping, and dancing around my house,I still feel his cool vibe....too bad he passed away so young.
This is my cousin Billy Stewart from Wash, DC. Billy was a Chess Recording artist in the 50's and 60's and was discovered by Bo Diddly, and his uncle Calvin (Hound Dog) Ruffin. Billy wrote and recording the 60's hits "I Do Love You" & "Sitting In The Park". This song "Summertime" was a remake of a George Gershwin classic. Billy died in 1970 when his vehicle plundged into the Neuce River in NC along with 3 of his band members. I am proud of my Family's Music History-Recording Artist Dane Riley
@laxlover34 I saw that movie this summer in Somalia, and I got this song stuck in my head till I got back to Canada. I was watching a lot a T.V. there because the Internet there is so slow, and I just did the second best thing to playing video games, dabbling in guitar, or watching videos, and that's T.V. :P.
Stuck on you was an okay movie, but this song is extraordinary.
Back in the 80s, 5 of us were driving to a party when this came on the cassette (yes cassette, lol) me and me bruv loved it and taped it off the driver. Eventually we lost the tapes. I tried for years to find it thinking it was a 80s recording to no avail. 20 odd years on, i find it on you tube. Still cant believe that talent like that! Years ahead of his time. Thanks.
i remember the day he passed-i lived just 7 miles away from the accident scene, and nearly every time i pass over that bridge, i still remember him...great, great talent, and a great loss ; (
I saw him in the 60's when I was a teenager. I remember when he died. He was coming to play at our Spring Prom at USC in Florence, SC that spring. I was so disappointed because I loved his music. His voice was phenomenal; and he was great to dance the shag to; I saw him at the Coachmen and 4 in Bennettsville, SC and I think at the Po' Boy Club in Timmonsville, SC

@TheDander3253 GREAT CHA CHA song.. reminds me of the dances at the skating rink in FOLLANSBEE,WVA When TheMojoMan was DJing there. WILD TIMES CRAZY DAYS
I've been a huge Billy Stewart fan since the early 60's.He made Scat Singing an artform, and nobody has been able to duplicate Mr Stewart's sound.Only the legendary Ella Fitzgerald was able to successfully sing scat, then Billy came along. There hasnt been a 3rd.
@whyudothatone No. Sublime sampled the Herbie Mann instramental version. Check that one out. It's good. Very. But this one......WOW. I've heard a dozen good or great versions of this classic and many more decent versions. This one by Billy Stewart,....He blows the shit out of this song!!!!!!
Remarkable, it's hardly ever that I'll actually be captured by hearing a singers pure voice anymore.. Music these days is disgraceful. This? This is legendary.
@topaztreasure jajajajjajajaj... excuse me..this is the shit is an expression used to say this the best or this the coolest...its in no way meant to be derogatory... excuse me for the mix up ... I love this song !!!!!
Always loved this song when I was a kid. At the time I had no idea who George Gershwin was and the fact he had composed this song. I was even fortunate enough to see Billy Stewart live at the Sugar Shack in Boston. Thanks for posting this and letting me relive those memories.
great song, to be honest I have noticed this song first through the 2 live crew. they used a sample of billy stewart's summertime in their song "pop that pussy". Even if both songs are completely different, I enjoy them both, though. :)
@pinkstew1981 You should be proud. I remember hearing this song when I was a little girl and I song it all time. Most people did not know that your grandfather was the original singer of I do love you. Most give the credit to GQ.
@yungquis06 i thought da album was dope .. love take em to war. banks is da man rite now. it sux that the sales dont reflect that but hes keeping real with his music.
@T0neT0uch hell yeah the album was dope, i woulda have like to see his sells reflect the quality of the music myself but hey thats how it is on an independent grind.
@xoomph Yes john coltrane did it a 10:00+version of it in 1960 on his "My favorite things" album, but before you do seek this version by Coltrane listen to my favorite things first and you will understand why.
I agree, this is the best version of this classic and it is 1960s big band jazz at its finest. This was played on Jazz stations as well as AM top forty and R&B. God, I miss AM top forty radio but I am sure glad YouTube is here. This song, along with "sitting in the park" and "I do love you" really show how talented Billy Stewart was. I'll bet that 50 years from now people will still listen to these records and say wow!
B.o.B. Uses this sample in the song Fame on his new cd "the Adventures of B.o.B" it turned out pretty good. btw yes this song is great by itself and on stuck on you.
@movado86 Well actually you can hear the full sample at the end of the song. And during the song, only the first trumpet "hit" is used throughout the song.
I heard this song a couple of months ago at a beach bar - it was so appropriate! Unfortunately, the only words that I cought were "brrr" and "lalala" and these were not all that helpful. I went crazy about finding this since, until I heard it on a radio jingle yesterday and I finally got it! In just one day, I must have heard it over 50 times. It makes me move and smile every single time. This is great stuff! I am not so much an R&R person, but hats off to Bille Stewart on this one.
@baarbear Janis Joplin, it is a song covered through many years by a lot of people. It was written by the Gershwin Brothers for the play Porgey and Bess.
@trippinongoodstuff this song was composed by George Gershwin in 1932 and the lyrics written by Dubose Heyward. In the 80 years since then, it has been recorded (covered) by everyone from Bing Crosby to Janis Joplin to Jim Morrison and the the Doors. It is an eternal classic.
Stunning, just stunning. I heard this on a compilation CD over 15 years ago, then lost the CD, and searched for many years to try to find this recording again, rendered impossible by the fact that I couldn't remember the artist's name. It's hard to believe that we didn't have the internet back then, at any rate, not like now. And now here is that same brilliant recording I was searching for for all that time, available just by typing a few words into Youtube. Wow!
I just cannot understand why so many of the greatest soulful sisters died tragicly and so young. I first saw Billy Stewart on, American Bandstand in the early 60's before his death. No one can sing Summertime like him ever! RIP Billy!
No, Gershwin was not alive in 1966. He died way back in 1937 of a brain tumor at age 39. "Summertime" comes from his 1935 masterpiece folk opera, "Porgy & Bess"
...and all others who don't agree with me or Gregd8888
Kinnear and Stewart have similar styles but different sounds. I prefer Kinnear's version, and if there was a full version of that I'd go with that. Kinnear's is more upbeat and snazzy, this is a little softer and more smooth. It has nothing to do with class, but everything to do with personal preference. Unless you consider class to be snotty and judgmental. In which case you definitely have class.
@FlamingDrake Kinnear attempted to do an exact cover of Stewart's version. Same arrangement and vocal style. He tried to capture Stewart's unique vocals. This is Stewart's style, not Kinnear.

Wow!

Thanks for posting the Billy Stewart version, the one blasting from the radios in the 60's.

I just cannot understand why so many of the greatest soulful sisters died tragicly and so young. I first saw Billy Stewart on, American Bandstand in the early 60's before his death. No one can sing Summertime like him ever! RIP Billy!

BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG EVER!!
WAS GERSHWIN ALIVE WHEN THIS WAS RECORDED? JUST CURIOUS WHAT HE THOUGHT OF THIS! We probably never imagined a version like this.

No, Gershwin was not alive in 1966. He died way back in 1937 of a brain tumor at age 39. "Summertime" comes from his 1935 masterpiece folk opera, "Porgy & Bess"

I think greg kinnear's version of this song is much better than this but this is still pretty good.

Wow, are you in a minority....Kinnear did it real good but to say he is better???????????? Damn some people have no class.

...and all others who don't agree with me or Gregd8888
