  • oh the bridge I replaced on it was a babicsz bridge you won't regret it!

  • I put an ebanol neck on my squier vintage 70s from the fretted 4 string version. I call it franken squier the ebanol neck and those duncan designed pickups create a feel of something else... check it out I posted it on here...

  • Looks just like jaco`s!

  • I just ordered one of these online... can't wait to play it....

  • I bought one of these basses, particularly a vintage modified jazz bass (the '77 style one, with the maple fretboard)... I'm used to expensive brand instruments as a guitar player, and never liked the squier standard guitars (ok I hate them), so you can imagine I didn't expected the bass to be good when I saw it at the store... until I played it. I still can't believe it! It sounds great, plays great, feels great, better than many Mexican Fenders.

Great playing by the way, and a great review!

  • @handrix89 True, my playing is great and the Vintage & Vibe series are really well done - i mean thanks for tuning in haahhaa (but yeah i like my playing here too!). The feel & sound of this bass is really inspiring. I'm a guitarist too & this has been my fav axe for the past 2years. I almost got that 77 but i just don't like block markers or bound necks.

  • @paapakobe lol good thing you like your own playing, I can see you're at peace with your own self!! btw I wrote "didn't expected" before, that's a consequence of not using english for a while :P. Thanks for your good vibe, man! That fretless is in good hands, keep on making it sing.

  • @paapakobe i didn't like them either but i was wondering how long the neck would last with

    rotto sound round wound strings

  • @paapakobe I really like the sound at 4:00 when you get into the African rhythms. It's very percussive. Does that sound come from hard callouses, playing with the nails, using some muting with your left hand, playing with a hard touch...or all of the above? Thanks! Nice playing.

  • @ocean4315 Thanks - I'll analyze. I don't have real callouses. I'm playing a bit hard, directing the string more up-down from the finger board instead of across= mo snap. The percussiveness is boosted by playing staccato - left fingers strong but brief, sometimes barely 'fretting' the note - it's about the rhythm 1st, then melody. There's a subtle double & triplet effect too. The double is:string-touch(upright bass style); triplet is pluck>left-finger mute/staccato >right-hand string touch.

  • African bass style is : a drum singing like a vocalist

  • the fretboard its secure, like it woulld not bend with the time?

  • @danielhl22 A fretboard MUST bend. The neck & truss rod are more responsible for that. The question is, "how long will the surface last with round-wound strings?" ! That's what I'm keeping my eye on.

  • awww farty sound ! that's nice one

  • that guy below me is awesome! I'm subbed to him haha

  • Hey man, you do a great job in proving something I've known for a while now - it's the player, not the bass. A great player can make an inexpensive bass sound incredible. Check out my videos - I have quite a few made with my $175 (used) Yamaha. I think it sounds amazing, as I think your fretless Squier sounds.

  • @Mr5stringBob I checked your vids - very nice flow. I liked Greensleeves, Slap & Jaco Tribute. Yamaha is one company who's "cheap" basses actually sound/play great - or used to. Great pianos, drums, acoustic guitars but their electric guitars suck. I'm impressed at the sound you get out of that Acoustic amp. I thought they were the most soulless-dry amp i ever played but YOU & Mr Jaco knw how to use it. Thanks for tuning in broda. Now... if we could only get you to be right-handed.. hehehe

  • @paapakobe thanks so much man! I'll work on the right hand thing :)

  • This is a pretty guitar

  • Dude, this video just has so much win in it!

  • Its amazing that a lower end priced bass can sound so good, i guess its in the hands of the player, Much respect for you that sounded AWESOME, i have been playing for about 5 months and now want a FRETLESS, i am looking at a SADOWSKY. You my friend can really play, i hope to get half as good on fretless, thanks for a great video and your skills.

  • jaco pastorius for an affordable prize

  • so the quarter notes are in the lines design of the fret?

  • i have the exact same bass but im not sure if i should replace my strings im thinking rotosound flatwounds

  • i have this bass and i love it. i dont even consider it a squire to be honest. when referring to it, i say "my fretless fender vintage j bass" not "my squire" like i would refer to most other squires as

  • The whole idea of the ebonol is that it is harder than rosewood. Therefore, you can potentially get away with roundwounds. It's a really nice fretboard material actually.

  • This guy is fabulous ! awsome !

  • Awesome! What song is that bass line from around the 2 min mark?

  • @mylilpc It's all original/ improv but now you've asked, it sounds a little like "And the Beat Goes On..." haha

  • very nice sound for a squire...

  • lol, you have the WHITEST fingernails i have ever seen, lol. like they blend in with the fretmarkers. but on topic, i'm actually getting rid of my fender jazz fretless. i jsut cant get used to it and wont need that sound in anything i play (got it as part of a trade lol)

  • This bass costs $2300 in my country :(

  • @emiolav nowhere on earth should this cost $2300! It is only a SQUIER w/ ebonol fingerboard, not a FENDER w/ rosewood. Check carefully - either you're mistaking the model or they are trying to rip someone off.

  • @paapakobe yes man,i live in Argentina,here,1 dollar is 4 pesos.Everything is too expensive,it sucks!:(

  • @paapakobe yes man,i live in Argentina,here,1 dollar is 4 pesos.Everything is too expensive,it sucks!:(...Imagine,,A squier jazz bass california series (a horrible bass)costs $1500 here!!!ITS A CRIME!!!Imagine a fender...

  • @emiolav Better you go to the forest & make your own broda. Or find some old wood furniture

  • @paapakobe jaja,,i agree..

    you rock mann!!

  • @emiolav I hope this time next year, or next month, you have done it & we are watching you play it on youtube. I made my first guitar from used parts. My only tools a medium rasp file, drill, chisel, sandpaper & borrowed router. Buy neck, tuners, bridge & pickups on ebay. done

  • How well does the frettboard hold up being, made of plastic?

  • @poshi12 Shows marks from the round-wounds, but no grooves or significant wear yet. It's very durable.

  • @DaNorthernLight You can do that - like Mick Karn, one of my favorite bassists. I don't slap often & my technique isn't well developed. The absence of frets means 'slap' doesn't sound the same at all. It's more like upright bass string slap sound. Popping is possible but so is playing it with spoons.. if you wanna do it go for it

  • Really nice playing dude :D

If anyone's thinking about buying one of these I've got one for sale:

    gumtree(dot)com/london/04/60169804(dot)html

    Sorry for spam, cheers

  • Nice one

  • Based on the female interviewer's reaction, I have got to learn to play the bass.

  • i think i just found a new bass my old one is getting fret buzz a fretless bass should solve that and it's in my price range

  • your bass appears to have frets. Also I think your playing is superb, but is it the stock pickups like you mention that are picking up unwanted noise?

  • @jgk381 hahaha holy shit you retard, the frets are painted on.... looool you know literally nothing

  • @moceanu haha, but not that funny considering a real fretless bass doesn't need gay little lines on it. maybe your retarded and need fret lines, idk.

  • @jgk381 haha, maybe you should post on a video of a "real" fretless bass then, idk

  • @moceanu Actually the fret lines are inlaid plastic of a different type than the fingerboard. I wish they were the same color as the fingerboard so you could see them, but not so much

  • @moceanu don't go insane dude.

  • @jgk381 The stock PU's have the minimal single coil hum except when they're both on, they cancel noise completely. The other 'unwanted noise' is the plastic/steel string buzz which is not warm like the wood/steel buzz.

  • @paapakobe ok, thanks. please disregard my other comment about the fret lines/inlays. I don't have anything against a fretless with inlays, in fact I'm in the proces of ordering an sx jazz fretless that has the inlays too, and its a really affordable model. That guy was just being a jackass so I had to come back at him with something, lol. I think you got a fine bass probably better than the one I'm getting, and you got skills on that thing. keep it up!

  • @jgk381 It has the fret markings, BUT no frets.

  • Kobenaaaaaaaa. You sound awesome

  • Is a standard jazz bass fretless better??

  • i jammed with a homeless guy at guitar center,he was playing this very bass doing some amazing slap bass gave me a few tips on slap we jammed fora good hour maybe hour and a half real good vibe he was suprised when i told him im a primarily metal bassist then we jammed some more haha

  • @virginkiller777 That's awesome! lol.

  • "i like the sound of that"

    JAJAJAJAJAJAJA

  • i have a 97' model at home but dispite the price it is a truely exellent bass. perfect for someone who wants to customize a guitar but doesnt want to worry about destroying a masterpiece.

  • The Squier Jazz fretless really is a great bass for the money. The tone and sound is brilliant. I have a Fender Standard Jazz in Sunburst and the Squiers are very very close to matching it. Do you prefer roundwounds or flatwounds on the fretless? Great video.

  • is ecko of lost

  • @sazon0 I didn't see that show much so i just got it. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is an amazing actor. I met him years ago when he was in Oz & had his #in USA.

  • Actually the reason players pluck around half way between the fret and the bridge is because it has a bassier, more harmonic response. They have to move their right hand position to keep it around that same place when they change frets.

I like your video style though, very relaxed and approachable :)

  • Right on sir! I do that to maintain consistency or tailor the tone on a note-by-note bassist.. i mean basis ;) Thanks for your comment

  • funny comments on the video broher! (at the end of the day, I'm the editor..)

  • 12th fret, that is where my buddy Les Godfrey sells his instruments. That guy is an incredible musician and a unbelievable luthier! He is into martial arts and guitars. No drugs no booze.

  • Could that be a steinberger i see in the background?

  • Nope - not a steinberger - that's one of my own custom built guitars with a neck manufacture defect that showed up. More on that guitar later.

  • Great video, man.

I'm thinking of picking up a fretless on the weekend. When I tried one for the first time (after four years of play, I'm seventeen) about a week ago...I fell in love with it. A whole different sound and style I'd never experienced before. I'm very, very excited.

    Cheers from Canada, my friend.

  • Africa

  • Just picked one of these up today. Amazing. I agree with the player, though - it would be worthwhile to swap out the bridge for something with more mass, to improve (the already awesome) tone and sustain.

  • Subscribe & check "fretless jazz mods #4 " video., or, follow the series to hear the gradual transformation. Anything steel/brass is better: HipShot, Fender, Schaller, LeoQuan... Beware, many replacements are just higher-mass versions of the same junk metal

  • this sound very bad...

better to buy a 2nd hand made in mexico if you are low on cash

  • nice sound i have not began messing fretless but this makes me want to

  • really good and interesting playing mate, in good hands every bass sounds fat!!!

  • I got a fretless. Aren't they Incredible???!!!!

  • Sweet playing man. You reckon this bass would sound good with a pick by any chace?

  • To answer your question i tried it.... it sounds good. It makes me play it like a guembri / oud (traditional African instruments). I'm going to do that sometimes - thanks! Check my "fretless jazz #4 " video.

  • Get some D'Adario chrome flatwounds!

  • I hate flatwounds - I minght use some Elixirs.. then again, flatwounds would probably be more accurate when dealing with the intonation & sustain issues from the raised fretlines... I'll take your suggestion - some day. thnx

  • i use super light elixirs, they have lasted me for a year and with normal strings they last me a month

  • Compared to just about every other bass video I've seen, this video has incredible audio. The bass tone sounds tremendous. Great review.

  • Thanks. "incredible audio" = amazing GUITAR amp (not a recommended use for a vintage amp - i hope i don't kill it with these bass vibes) + good camera + happy fingers!

Pls subscribe & check it w/ the new Badass bridge i installed

  • excellent review man.!!

  • This basssss looks like Jacos thats cool

  • I think that that is what Squier was aiming for, because there are 2 fender Jaco signatures, so I think they wanted to to offer one that costs a lot less than the fenders. I really want to buy this bass.

  • Ok you guys, my friend IS a hot chic from a tropical country, an amazing singer and a mom with a full minivan. If you like her voice so much, go to 1.800.976... yeah right.

Next review is a "Stagg" 5-string bass.

  • Thanks. I have a few basses and this is my fav.

I write a cool riff every time i pick it up.

The stuff in the vid was improved on the spot.

When I change the bridge & pickups (soon)

    I'll post a comparison.
