Does anyone know the flugel horn player? I wonder my self if it might be John McLeavey,a Scot, who I believe played often with Benny when he put a British outfit together
Yes Prototek, the guitar is a Gibson L7 fitted with a "Charlie Christian" bar pickup, which is the same pickup used by Kessel on his Gibson ES350 (a similar model, which had a laminated maple top as opposed to the spruce top of the L7). The pickup is the key component, and it was also used for several years (early 60's) by the aforementioned Kenny Burrell on an L5. Anyway, this is marvelous vintage Louis. Thanks, Moglider.
Awesome clip! After Benny had such a success with Charlie Christian in his sextet he always made sure to have a good guitarist with him, something I fully intend on doing when I get to having my own band!
hate to say this but I like this version more than the record I have with goodman and christian.. Stewart is great

In those days Louis was showing his Kenny Burrell influence--much less evident in later years

Louis is a genius who was born to play the guitar. Absolutely wonderful.

Very nice clip! One of my favorite songs. Everyone took a nice solo too. Louis Stewart's guitar looks a lot like the one Kessel liked to use most.
