Tufslan and Vifslan think the ruby's value lies in its beauty and the joy it brings. The Groke sees only it's monetary value, and is willing to intimidate others to get it, and eventually trades it for another very expensive object.

I've never seen these versions of the Moomin before. I think they do capture the mystical and rather sinister side of the original Moomin books better than the Japanese anime version.

Thingumy and Bob are originally called Tufslan and Vifslan in Swedish, or Tiuhti and Viuhti in Finnish. These are not really gender specific names, unlike Bob. I've heard that these two carachters represent the love affair between Tove Jansson and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä.

Tufslan and Vifslan are hiding the ruby, terrified about anybody seeing their secret. They think it is the most beautiful thing in the world, and this ruby represents the love Tove and Tuulikki had for each other.

I think this idea makes also the Groke's character more complex. Is she representing hatred or prejudice of the world, spreading fear and coldness anywhere she goes, or maybe social pressure, claiming that the ruby belongs only to her?

This was really a lovely animation and a childhood favourite. Only something that the deepest darkest parts of Europe could produce. It was frightening and sinister to us children . Something that instilled into us a sense of fear and allowed our imagination to bloom.

Cheaper than having an English speaking cast of 3/4 actors. Incidentally, the narrator is Richard Murdoch - a great comedy actor, who sadly died 20 years ago. His voice is v signifcant in my memory, as he was THE voice of the Moomins in the UK version.

When the cartoon was first broadcast in the mid 90's here in the UK it messed my head up so much, giving me flashbacks of this original fuzzy felt series.

Guys Moomins were written by Finnish author (the book). Then the book was animated by Polish animation studio (the stop-motion version from this clip) and by Japanese animators (the anime version). That's why some people say "polish Moomins".

If you don't belive, in 4:55 in credits you have "Film Polski". That means "Polish Movie".

ok, I've read many moomins, but I've never noticed them say it's a she...but maybe it's becouse i'm a finn, and in finnish there are no words like "she" and "he",we use the same word "hän", wich is used with both women and men...so if you want to tell in finnish someone is a girl, you have to say it straight, and I'm not sure if Jansson has ever did so... moomins come from Finland btw(:

I know. :) Tove Jansson lived in Finland, but she and her family spoke Swedish, and the books were originally written in Swedish rather than Finnish. I don't speak Swedish, but I know it uses gender-specific pronouns, so if you can get hold of the untranslated books you can check to see what Jansson said about the Groke. Personally, I haven't seen the books in Swedish and think it would be interesting to know if all the English translators got it right.
