  • Is the Groke meant represent Nordic gloom in some way?

  • @Potionette81 I think she represents nothing in particular, just everything that's scary.

  • so what the hell was in the suitcase?????? it didn't say! whatever it was must have been bloody good to give a hat like that away!

  • @thedrunkenpole Not true!!! In Polish version there was also only narrator. You talking about Japanese version not Polish version.

  • The opening theme and the Moomin stories always put me in a good mood, they have warm, friendly, homely feeling, especially when I'm feeling down, thanks for uploading!

  • I loved this when I was a kid, I found it really mysterious and at the same time very comforting...

  • modern software allows anyone to make movies like these. Its sad that the talent to be able to dream poetically is gone. Its ironic even.nowadays all you get are battling robots with gattling guns .

  • modern software allows anyone to make movies like these. Its sad that the talent to be able to dream poetically is gone. Its ironic even.

  • The Groke is horrid, but the Hatty Fattners are worse!

  • Popped some cherries

  • "Mitä vittua?" as we Finns would say...

  • hobgoblins? :D

  • Isn't the Groke the same as the Mara? The cold evil that stalks Alan Garner's Weirdstone?

  • wow..Sniff suddelny gott brave..in the cartoon he screams and run away :O

  • "Moominmamma put on her warm shawl.."

What, the one that looks like it's made of lace and chiffon??!!

  • "Moominmamma put on her warm shawl..."

What, the one that looks like it's made of lace and chiffon??!!

  • "The moomins" was filmed in front of a live studio audience

  • Tufslan and Vifslan think the ruby's value lies in its beauty and the joy it brings. The Groke sees only it's monetary value, and is willing to intimidate others to get it, and eventually trades it for another very expensive object.

  • I've never seen these versions of the Moomin before. I think they do capture the mystical and rather sinister side of the original Moomin books better than the Japanese anime version.

Thingumy and Bob are originally called Tufslan and Vifslan in Swedish, or Tiuhti and Viuhti in Finnish. These are not really gender specific names, unlike Bob. I've heard that these two carachters represent the love affair between Tove Jansson and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä.

  • Tufslan and Vifslan are hiding the ruby, terrified about anybody seeing their secret. They think it is the most beautiful thing in the world, and this ruby represents the love Tove and Tuulikki had for each other.

I think this idea makes also the Groke's character more complex. Is she representing hatred or prejudice of the world, spreading fear and coldness anywhere she goes, or maybe social pressure, claiming that the ruby belongs only to her?

  • @koala1234ish I think Tofslan and Vifslan represent Tove and an earlier lover of hers, Vivica Bandler <3

Tuulikki was the inspiration for Too-ticki.

  • @TrueVerity Oh, that's right, thank you for pointing that out! My mistake :).

  • @TrueVerity U mean Tuutikki ?

  • @clintrock it was the "king ruby". the most valuable ruby in the world. it belongs to groke and was meant to be a present from her to the hoobgoblin or the wizard as i call him.

  • @Atripple i saw the anime version of her when i was a kid.... my poor mental health!!!! aaaaaahhhhh

  • This was really a lovely animation and a childhood favourite. Only something that the deepest darkest parts of Europe could produce. It was frightening and sinister to us children . Something that instilled into us a sense of fear and allowed our imagination to bloom.

  • Where can I find music similar to the theme music of this series? It's lovely.

  • i loved this show!! still do haha

  • what was that? pulp fiction for kids? what was in the freakin' suitcase?

  • @clintrock Marsellus Wallace's soul?

  • Uh, I'm glad for my mental health I didn't see that thing as a kid

  • Did you guys know that finnish animators have done remake version of all these episodes.I bet you all know :)

  • the groke scared the out of me, it really rally didtz.

  • Lol @ 1:50 "Oh the poor thing, said the Snortmaiden" " Oh, poor thing... poor thing"

  • The Groke should have put the beat down on them all

  • The groke should have ate them all

  • ינעאל אבו אל גרוק

  • Det här är så dåligt. Tecknade är så mycket bättre.

  • The Groke! Terrified me as a child...

Talk about being mugged down Memory Lane! You don't get kids programs like this anymore.

  • @queenbee2406 and thank god for that!!

  • Love it thanks for posting it!!!! A really gentle program!

  • Hahaha! And in cartoon version it is so shocking! Now its kind STUPID.

  • some seriously freaky shit used to freak me right out lolol

  • WTF

  • moomin (mumin) ftw!! =D

  • Cheaper than having an English speaking cast of 3/4 actors. Incidentally, the narrator is Richard Murdoch - a great comedy actor, who sadly died 20 years ago. His voice is v signifcant in my memory, as he was THE voice of the Moomins in the UK version.

  • Great that they made a trial like in the book :)

  • So, what was in the suitcase? Don't leave us in suspense, dammit!

  • a royal ruby - glowing and color-changing :)

  • Isn't the opening so catchy?

  • the groke used to scare the shit outa me

  • Wow, I never knew this existed. O.o

I only knew about the animated series.

  • haha, it destroyed my happy childhood 20 years ago :D (i'm polish )

  • @9sibra lol mine too Im finnish

  • haaahaa :D ei vittu repesin heti !! nii hyvänäköne toi hemuli xD

  • mul tulee mieleen Heihachi Tekkenist

  • Repesin aivan vitusti, kiitos. :D

  • totta :D

  • For me as a swede, this sound so wierd to my ears. I am so used to them speaking swedish or finnish.

  • Hated the cartoon version after remembering this so well from the early 80s...!!!! Loved this version!

  • i like this xD i'm such a hardcore fan :p

  • hardcore what ? cartoons ? :D

  • Hardcore moomin fan :333 also yes with cartoons, but mostly moomins

i'll watch /any/ moomin series, even that weird one with everyone in costumes

  • Animation made by PL ;)

  • This takes me right back to my earliest memories.

I remember not being scared as such, but having more of a feeling of being hypnotised.

When the cartoon was first broadcast in the mid 90's here in the UK it messed my head up so much, giving me flashbacks of this original fuzzy felt series.

    Enchanting, mystical and very unique.

  • The Groke is s-p-o-o-k-y...

  • what momin serie is this?

  • The groke is such a sad creature, she only wants some warmth and company although everyone hates her because they're afraid of her.

  • @Svittidiu like hillary clinton

  • @Svittidiu I always though SHE was HE! My childhood's ruined because the badass of my life is female...

  • @Pelaaja Ruined?! Remember what Kipling wrote: "The female of the species is more deadly than the male....":):)

  • @Svittidiu In the moomin book named Muumipappa ja meri...

  • @Svittidiu would u like her in your house making creepy wind noices, freecing u, and staring at u with her demonic red eyes?

  • @SomeDudes455 Retarded logic you have there.

  • @Svittidiu never mind -.-

  • @Svittidiu sorry *freeze* not freece, don't complain about spelling.

  • The groke isent evil, she is just misunderstand, cause she cant comunicate propperly, and she scares evryone away cause she kills what she moves on

  • it seems that the editors had shortened episodes to 5mins for some purposes, as each episode on the DVD are about 15 mins long, including this one. PEACE! ! ! and resist the oppressors

  • the groke use to scare the shit out of me...and its only recently i figured out its name.....is it me, or did they go out of there way to make that thing as scary as possible??

  • There is something wrong with the groke: The narrator is saying that groke is male. Actually groke is she. And secondly the hobgoblin´s hat is really great magician´s hat (it is written in Moomin book).

  • the animation is pure genius, I love it!

  • the groke is just misunderstood

  • Guys Moomins were written by Finnish author (the book). Then the book was animated by Polish animation studio (the stop-motion version from this clip) and by Japanese animators (the anime version). That's why some people say "polish Moomins".

If you don't belive, in 4:55 in credits you have "Film Polski". That means "Polish Movie".

  • @Isharek yep and when it comes down to it it's all down to dear old trove r.i.p

  • @Isharek The moomins was created by Tove jaanson it's finnish

  • @1FishJelly Yeah. But animation is polish. It was animated in Poland by polish studio.

  • @Kretek Ohh Sorry, i misunderstood

  • actually - Finnish.

  • its not polish you fucktards its finish

  • oh my god the groke is scary!! really scary

  • this is pretty funny XD

  • The Groke was damn scary. I grew up watching this in the early 80's.

The Anime version years later was also good.

  • OMG, British were actually watching Polish "Moomins"? that's certainly surprising!

  • i ust 2 av nightmares when i wer younga about the groke scarey fkin thing

  • haha, i love the moomins, but i grew up watching the cartoons on CBBC, this is just.. wierd...

  • They should put this back on tv! (at night time, just for adults) lol.

  • why can't whe watch all of these momin episodes?

  • Groke rocks my socks!

  • I will never sleep again.... they will get me!!

  • same here!

  • .....this is just f*cking wrong.

  • the groke used to scare the friggin crap out of me. still does.

  • i LOVE the moonins : D but i must say, i prefer the cartoons over this one xD however, the groke looks reeeally scary in this one .__.. he scares the crab out of me .__.

  • made in poland

  • snufkins such a rocker

    we love him so

  • I love these! Thank you!

But why do the Snork Maiden have that earring? :D

  • Yay, Moomins 1979 is finally on Danish DVD!

  • This used to scary the shit out of me!!!

  • "the hemulin" :D

  • As I know, this version of Moomin was made in my city :)

But when I was a kid, on TV was only the Japanese version.

  • oooho ich liebe! <3333

  • finland momin besT!

  • You've got to be kidding me, how can anyone prefer the cartoons over these amazing creations! The cartoons just don't have any soul.

  • I agree the animated versions are poor compared to these versions.. I remember watching these as a child.. Far superior!!! :)

  • Noooooooooo shave you deleted the others as the thing says the video's are unavaliable!

  • I never see like this this was a good but because i live in finnish i like more for this video if moomins talks finnish five stars !

  • ... I was so scared by this version of the momins years ago ... it is still scary ... It is like they have twisted the story into a horrible nightmare... .. . But really nice to see it again though !!

  • Umm... Not to complain, but I really, I mean REALLY REALLY prefer the japanese anime moomins :> They are still very good even thought they aren´t all based in Tove Jansson's stories.

  • And the Groke slitherd away like an icy bitch.

  • lol, Polish film, haha

  • this is so fail! it has nothing to do with Real Moomin

  • /agreed

  • lol moomins creator was finnish the whole thi g is finnish but japanese ppl helped to make the anime and even this is finnish :D

this is just the moomins that finland was making

  • Actually this was made in Poland.

But anime was made in Japan.

  • The Moomins (Originally: Opowiadania Muminków/Die Mumins) - Poland/Austria, 1977-82 (TV series). The Japanese versions were made prior to this. The animation here is clearly in the Germanic style.

  • There have been multiple Japanese versions. The anime series most people here probably saw as kids wasn't made prior to this production, it was made in the early '90s. From Wikipedia: "Moomin (Originally: Tanoshii Muumin Ikka) - Japan/Finland 1990-91 (TV series)."

  • Animators of this film are Polish .)

  • Rolf that was funny

  • Sniff is the best!

  • well if you think thats the british version of moomin sou you can see the history of moomin you asshole

  • finland fucking owns u

  • 4:56 (c) Film Polski = (c) Polish Movie

  • 4:56 (c) Film Polski = (c) Polish Film

  • Tää sarja on tehty Puolassa

  • i think it´s lovely and cool.

    all the moomins´stuff is awesome.

  • THAT IS CREEPY!

  • no, it's the british one.

what makes u think it's finnish?

  • i tought it was made in poland

  • It was a Polish/German co-production, and later the Brits dubbed it into English. But of all the TV adaptations, it's the truest to Tove Jansson's original Moomintroll books, and for that reason I think a lot of people assume it's Finnish.

  • In the original version it didnt went like these! :< And that groke or "mörkö" as we say wasnt like that. He cant talk anything he just says "ärrrrrrr!". This is so wrong. :<

  • actually she says "I will be back!" in the first episode she is in, check my video (sadly i didnt recorded the voice though..)

  • thanks for uploading, im a scared child again.

  • fuck you finland where the first one ho did the moomin

  • but this animation is a polish/austiran production.

  • this is disturbing...

  • This is more like a book

  • that's polish version of 'Moomins'..

  • Why is it animated? and not cartoon? The groke aint scary in this version though (something im pleased with ^_^)

  • The cartoon didnt come till later.. This is the original tv show. all animated and was alot more dreamy and to be honest some episodes were scary...

  • Narration in the British version is brilliant.

  • In Swedish books the Groke is referred to as "she". I know as I own the books :)

  • Thanks, uruux!

  • How do you guys know it's a she?

  • If you watch this episode you can hear the narrator say "herself" and "she" a couple of times when referring to the Groke. Or if you read the books, they make it clear she's a she.

  • ok, I've read many moomins, but I've never noticed them say it's a she...but maybe it's becouse i'm a finn, and in finnish there are no words like "she" and "he",we use the same word "hän", wich is used with both women and men...so if you want to tell in finnish someone is a girl, you have to say it straight, and I'm not sure if Jansson has ever did so... moomins come from Finland btw(:

  • I know. :) Tove Jansson lived in Finland, but she and her family spoke Swedish, and the books were originally written in Swedish rather than Finnish. I don't speak Swedish, but I know it uses gender-specific pronouns, so if you can get hold of the untranslated books you can check to see what Jansson said about the Groke. Personally, I haven't seen the books in Swedish and think it would be interesting to know if all the English translators got it right.

  • the groke is so awesome, she is exactly what every kids show needs, children need fear (i don't mean that in a wierd way).

  • she´s so innocent... everyboady hates her <:(

  • By the way, I just watched that videoclip and Groke's voice sounds just like she is snoring! Absolutely funny voice :D

  • idk about what nycmojoghot sayd but i dont think its avtualy made in japan (the series)

anyway, we call them mumi trolls in norway ^^

and the ?grokk? or what ever is called "hufsa" lol... oh culture :D

  • tää on iha paras
