Well here you can see what one can do with spanish guitar techniques: At 1:50 you can see a so called "quartillo" :) I hope my eyes are not kidding me ;)
It's a fantastic arrangement! I learn this now and although it's not hard to learn, it's very hard to polish like doing the percussion or having the accents in the right place. I wish I could write such an awesome arrangement..
Depends on what you mean by a beginner. I feel it is easy to play something if playing only means remembering the notes & transferring it to an instrument. For me playing means being able to make the piece my own and being able to include the feeling that the piece deserves. Thanks
What a terrific transcription, and played by a master with the melody always balanced just out in front of the accompaniment, and those lovely connected lyrical lines. This is what separates a classical based expert is the technique to be able to accomplish that but then it takes an artist such as Michael to bring it all together in a superb rendering. Bravo Michael.
This takes at most a week to master? Well, anything learnt by tab can't be mastered because that way you simply don't use your ear to hear the music and play it, but just your muscle memory. This approach creates utterly crappy music that you see all over the youtube, ie. kids that play completely out of tune but tell you which finger to place on which fret and string. Not even hearing they're out of tune... :)
So wot you are saying is this guy is crap, I agree its annoying having ppl who aren't that good trying to teach other how to play, but if you look at all the covers of this rendition none of them put the emotion or heart into it as Chapdelaine does.
The interesting thing about what he does is it is not so technically tough as in a MArtin Taylor or Tuck walking bass line thing, but the way he gives each voice (bass, melody, accomp) it's own unique sound so it really sounds like you are listening to a few instruments, versus one trying to sound like a few instruments. And that is due to training, ear, finesse and dedication.
Yeah....years of classical training....but ther are MANY players with a lifetime of classical playing who do not delve into arranging pop tunes. MC is a very creative person who seems to know what he likes and is not afraid to stick to his guns.
Even if it means offending Segovia!
Edgar Crus is another top notch classical guitarist who comesup with some outrageous versions of Queen, Areosmith Led Zep...
WE are lucky to have these people doing thie thing!
Yeah, Michael is one of the absolute players out there for sure. I caanot imagine the limits of his playing with all htose years of classical behind him.
I had the great pleasure of taking classes with him last month at Swan Gathering.
His arrangining class was by far the highlight of my week, and one of the best classes I have ever taken in 10 yrs at SG.
VEry smart and funny straight forward guy, with a great gift for explaining his mind set w/o going into note for note teaching style
It's not easy at all. A good piece that could open you up to this song is Classical Gas. Mastering that will get you basically half way through this song as far as the different tempos go
shweet. Yeah I was there too. I attended his career in guitar seminar as well. It's amazing what this guys been through, then I walked him to his car. =D Do you attend Westfield?
well it's the largest in the county or state or something, so it gets pretty good funding... But I swear I could care less about the looks. Some of the teachers really suck. Good guitar tho =D
Why is everyone always screaming about getting tabs? Watch his fingers, experiment, work it out. It's not rocket science. Getting to his level of expertise, that is the hard part and tabs aren't going to do that for you.
Its realy hard to get his finger technique in his Songs. Even if youre a pretty good guitar player its hard to check that. I still asked a lot of very good Tab makers to listen them out and all of them gave up. So, why dont you try it? For all the others: Check "Jawmunji" he also has covered this version and he has free Tabs for the song ;)
I already have, that's why you don't hear me screaming "gimme tabs". There is another consideration, that is HIS arrangement of this old classic. There is something to be said for your own addition of creative flair. If everyone played it the same, why would anyone listen? Eh?
I think every guitarist can decide how he plays a song. Completely covered or even with some additions or something "easier" playable. Thats why the guitar is such a good music instrument ;)
Dan, it's not a matter of being "good" it's merely a matter of caring enough to try. I always figured I wasn't going to learn anything if I let someone else do all the work for me. Watching a performer like this; figure out what he's doing to get into the ballpark; and finally polishing it out to be YOUR adaptation. Try it - there is no feeling like it. It's a far better feeling of personal satisfaction than being spoon fed the tabs.
1. Why do you care if people want to learn the song that way? 2.I now know this song because of Jawmunji's tab. 3. I read his tab but it still is my own adaptation of the song it doesnt sound like michaels or jaws' version a tab is just gonna help you get the LAYOUT of the song its too fast to pick up sometimes not everyone can do that so why dont you stop being ignorant. thank you =)
you dont need tabs you need music theory. look at the scales hes using. you dont even know what tuning hes in. he would have to teach you himself before you might get remotely close. that is if you dont ubnderstand theory
He has a unique style to him MC, he adds new dimensions to fingerstyle. Thanks for putting this video up, it was good to see he hasn't changed the way he plays it much since the last video I saw :)
