The only question I have is about types of cycles that are allowed in the ride. The reason I ask is due to the fact that I am a pedicab driver. The cycle that I ride/pedal carries four people. The two in front pedal, and the other two are passengers. Plus it's my form of transportation. If I could I would love to be evolved in a ride like this one.
@zawest2000 - Well, as far as I know, any human powered ROAD LEGAL vehicle (I don't think they allow scooters, or skate boards... but any kind of pedaled bike that has brakes and is legal to ride on a city street) is allowed. One consideration... there are some really tough grades on the route. I would probably suggest not carrying a passenger! but up to you. ;-)
Great coverage of the event! Thanks for not running over the road bikes on the downhill! One day I made the mistake of parking my van at the Bogdanovich Rec Center which is at the top of Anchovy (north of 25th street).
@sgsgent - HA! Yeah... I didn't get it on video... but there was one downhill switchback road where I was behind about 5 road bikes... they beat me up the hills for sure but on the downhills the trike's weight makes it really want to go down faster than the road bikes (and I can take the turns pretty fast... so I was burning up my brake pads trying not to run them down. Finally found an opening and passed them on the downhill. Would have been cool video. Bummer I didn't have it on!
@hauserkaspar - we pretty much stayed close... Jim and Michael beat me up the switchback hill... We regrouped after the big hills in San Pedro... Jim did the 62 mile (metric)... then Trent and Derek and I pretty much rode the last 40 of the century together. ;-) Michael was ahead of us and stayed ahead to the finish line!
@dregerclock Not bad for a bunch of weirdos. You guys probably ended up in the slowest group but did you notice how others have to take a seat at the finish? That's why there is not such a thing as a DF grin. Those narrow saddles cut off the bloodstream to your grin muscles.
Great stuff, and good job on the fund-raising! Did they close the roads for the event or have folks in southern CA just stopped driving due to the high gas prices?
@theaesthetics - HA! Well it was 7 am Sunday morning when we started... but Yes, they did have the bridge from the Start over the channel closed for us... and they had the section of freeway over the two big harbor bridges closed for us... but after that we were on share the road rules for the rest of the ride (after about the 8 mile mark. (but there were some cars on Ocean Blvd through downtown when we were going though as a massive group.
@CullyJ - yeah, you can see in the sections where I was going down the bridge how I am coming down faster than the road bikes... and on the last downhill after the long climb I pass a cyclist on the left. The trikes really move on a good downhill! I wish I had my camera on when we were doing this one winding road downhill. I was behind a pack of bikes and kept having to brake cause they were slowing for safety on the turns! Finally had to pass em to save my brake pads!
@CullyJ - depends on what you mean by "normal"... on a flat smooth road or trail I often will be doing about 16 to 17... 15mph average over distances with flats and some climbs. climbing steep grades like you see in the video, 4 mph on 10% and greater... downhill I had to use my brakes to not run over road bike riders. because of our extra weight I have hit up to 45 mph on a 10% down grade. They handle good on downhills at speed but it is good to lean into turns and brake on the inside wheel.
@CullyJ - yes you can flip a trike at speed and with a sharp turn... if you don't lean into turns and brake on the inside wheel... but generally they are very stable and can turn and stop faster and safer than an upright two wheeler in my opinion. as to the danger of TYPING... I try not to text on my cell phone while riding. ;-)
What about a trike squadron for the Tour de Palm Springs???

@zawest2000 - maybe you could say the highest donor to the cause gets to ride... and the runner up has to pedal with you! ;-)

Awesome video Glenn. Wish I could have been there. Weather is improving up here in Portland. Ordered my Catrike Expedition yesterday. Can't wait.

Century is a serious ride on a trike. I'll have to wait until part 2 to see if the squadron leader left the rest somewhere in the Bermuda <I

Loved the video Glenn...it was just like I was there. Looking forward to seeing the other half of it.

As a former roadie, I'd feel like a total lightweight if I were passed by, not just a recumbent bike, but, to be specific, a recumbent TRIKE!
You're inflating this triker's self-esteem...

DREGER - thanks for catching my error. Yes I meant TIPPING.
You've actually had to brake to prevent from running into roadies? HA, THAT'S GREAT!

Hello,
I'm curious what a trike's normal speed is?
Is there a danger of typing at a hgh speed?
Great video!
Regards,
Cullen
