Puchi Carat is a good Breakout-ish game. It's got a paddle and ball but you try to break blocks quickly (that descend) or when a single line of blocks is eradicated by breaking the top one, you make life more difficult for the computer (or human competitor) who is doing the same thing you are, on their own half of the screen. So it's a VS. Tetris-meets-Breakout. Plus, there's cute anime characters that you choose to be your player, and will react negatively or positively as events progress.
Like them all, Arkanoid, Arkanoid Revenge of DOH, Arkanoid DOH It Again, Arkanoid Returns, Arkanoid Plus/Live, though I am lukewarm on Arkanoid DS. Though to be fair Plus/Live and the DS one seems to reuse levels from the original games, all levels in both games in the new ones seem like repeat levels.
The first Arkanoid game I beat back when Arkanoid games were the only ones I was emulating. It took me such a long time to beat the game because Doh is a bitch in this one. Thankfully, unlike the first Arkanoid, Arkanoid Revenge of Doh does not disallow continues on the final stage. I was royally screwed once on Tournament Arkanoid(on the original cabinet) because I used up my remaining Vauses on Doh. I wasn't too pleased, but the day after, I beat the game on that same cabinet. Good times.
My favorite breakout-style game right now is Kirby's Block Ball on the Game Boy, and of course I'll give a nod to Breakout and Super Breakout on the 2600 as well :)
its DOH! not D'OH!

Some other good games in this style are Gunbarachi, Plump Pop and Shatter.

This game looks like a lot of fun. Even some modern breakout-style games lack this many neat features.
My first experience with the genre was on my old mac when I was a kid. I remember it being sort of a first person perspective brick breaking game.

while this was a very good game, my favorite of this type was Super Breakout on the Atari 2600.

I got to check and see if this version is on the Taito Legends series.
Breakout 2000 is pretty good for the Jaguar, but nothing beats playing Breakout with the Atari Paddle Controllers
Bring Back Paddle Controllers !!!

I love the original Arkanoid, and also Thunder & Lightning. I only played Revenge of DOH a few times, but it's an excellent game as well.
