When I first posted yesterday, the Wasilla Project was all over me in minutes carping this story. When I asked for newspaper references proving that the issue was a big public todo, they disappeared. Now I see why. There was no coverage except the Wasilla article about charging rapists for exams. Palin says she never knew of charging rape victims and would never support the practice. NO ONE has proved she knew about the practice of charging victims or that they were indeed ever charged.
Why do you assume that the newspaper has to report she knew in order to prove she knew? She approved the city budgets before and after the funds were removed. She fired the previous police chief who was pro-active in developing a sexual assualt response team. Her objection to the kits stems from the fact that it includes emergency contraception. SHe had plenty of opportunity to reverse the policy once it was outed yet she chose not to.

This story is bogus. I emailed the two major newspapers in Alaska plus the Wasilla Frontiersman yesterday and heard back directly from all of them. The only coverage of this "public controversy" was one vague article in the Washilla paper. That article (May 23, 2000) is inconclusive as to whether Police Chief Fannon supported charging rape victims for exams. He seemed more to say the city should not have to pay, the rapist should pay as part of sentencing. It's vague. Palin is not mentioned.

Where is the WasillaProject. When I first posted this morning, they were all over my post in minutes. Since I asked for proof of the issue being so "public" via newspaper coverage, I've not heard a peep. Guess I know the answer now. Basically, there was none to speak of - nothing that you can hang Sarah Palin with.

I have at the end of the day been contacted by the news editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and the Chief Editorial Assistant of the Anchorage Daily News. Both confirm that they carried no coverage of the rape exam issue in 2000. Seems this story has been blown out of proportion by Palin opponents since media coverage was limited to a vague story in the Wasilla newspaper.
I knew this story never gave light of all Alaskan Legislators stance at the time. She is one woman in a town of 9000 pop.. My brother, brainwashed to keep his San Fran Job in film, said this was the work of his fellow lib coolaid drinkers. Wag the dogs
Considering that only a small fraction of rape cases ever go to court far enough to get a conviction- even with the evidence- this does fall back on the shoulders of most of the victims. Palin is a bad woman.

I did get an email today from the publisher of The Frontiersman - the Wasilla newspaper - verifying that they ran only one article on the rape kit issue. That article (May 23, 2000) is inconclusive as to whether Police Chief Fannon really supported charging rape victims out of pocket for exams. He seemed more to say the city should not have to bear the cost, the rapist should pay and the cost should be part of sentencing. However, the story is vague on details. Palin is not mentioned.

The forensic exam costs are considered emergent care and include facility charges, lab charges, and forensic nursing and doctor charges. Above and beyond all that, no woman dealing with sexual assault should be confronted with having to pay for this aspect of police work. You aren't expected to pay for robbery investigations, are you?
It's clear that she opposed public funding of rape kits because they commonly include an emergency contraceptive for the victim. This is a classic example of her rabid, dogmatic ideology getting in the way of sound public policy and common human decency. Shame on her.

I think this is a sad situation all around.Just the possibility of a fee may have intimidated some rape victims from reporting the crime. Considering Alaska has the highest number of rape cases, the fact that it was in the books at all, regardless of whether the police actually charged anyone is pretty awful.

As a former pregnancy counselor at Planned Parenthood who has counseled rape victims, I think you take away their power by assuming they all need someone to fight for them. Some need to fight for themselves to regain their power.
My question was and still is: how many were charged, and how many had to pay? My googling showed none, all were covered, none were out of pocket for the taxpayers or the victim. So we're talking about wordsmithing here: "charged" vs. "paid".

Show me a Wasilla rape victim (redacted, anonymous, verified) bill for a rape kit. No? I too wish the police chief would come forward - but his not doing so isn't irrefutable evidence that Palin is guilty (a la Boehlert). Further, liberal bloggers keep referring to the "policy" as though it was adopted by the city, written in stone and signed off on by Palin. No such policy existed that I can find - ANYWHERE, not from the cleverest of liberal bloggers and Obama-loving "press" secretaries.

Boehlert's 4-page article is clever, no doubt. I love the way he accuses Geraghty of ignoring a fact that the police chief seemed to say Wasilla had a some point charged rape victims (not proved) but he, himself, ignores Geraghty's link to a Wasilla document showing the town paid for the four rapes that occurred in Wasilla in 2000 and 2001 (according the FBI statistics).Granted, this is a murky story. But absent of concrete fact, Palin is innocent unless proven guilty in our justice system.

Make an objective decision about this issue - instead of relying on the liberal blogs for "truth." Boehlert's debunking consists of an impressive series of proving points by offering missing information. "If you can't prove it, she must be guilty" logic. He cleverly uses terms like "probably, likely, apparently" to punctuate HIS wishful thinking. And the kicker is that he bases his entire proof on Palin "approving the policy." That proof for him is that Palin signed off on the 2000 budget. That's it. FBI records show only a couple of rapes in Wasilla that year and Wasilla paid for them.

Speaking of the Wasilla budget, FBI records indicate that the city of Wasilla paid for 4 rape kits in the years of 2000 and 2001. The FBI estimates that Wasilla has about 1-2 rapes per year. Do the math. No one has ever produced evidence that a woman was charged for a rape kit in Wasilla. Again, in the absence of link ability, google "A Wasilla Rape Kit Doc Emerges" and get a copy of the document. It's available on other sites too.

When I first posted yesterday, the Wasilla Project was all over me in minutes carping this story. When I asked for newspaper references proving that the issue was a big public todo, they disappeared. Now I see why. There was no coverage except the Wasilla article about charging rapists for exams. Palin says she never knew of charging rape victims and would never support the practice. NO ONE has proved she knew about the practice of charging victims or that they were indeed ever charged.

Why do you assume that the newspaper has to report she knew in order to prove she knew? She approved the city budgets before and after the funds were removed. She fired the previous police chief who was pro-active in developing a sexual assualt response team. Her objection to the kits stems from the fact that it includes emergency contraception. SHe had plenty of opportunity to reverse the policy once it was outed yet she chose not to.

This story is bogus. I emailed the two major newspapers in Alaska plus the Wasilla Frontiersman yesterday and heard back directly from all of them. The only coverage of this "public controversy" was one vague article in the Washilla paper. That article (May 23, 2000) is inconclusive as to whether Police Chief Fannon supported charging rape victims for exams. He seemed more to say the city should not have to pay, the rapist should pay as part of sentencing. It's vague. Palin is not mentioned.

I have at the end of the day been contacted by the news editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and the Chief Editorial Assistant of the Anchorage Daily News. Both confirm that they carried no coverage of the rape exam issue in 2000. Seems this story has been blown out of proportion by Palin opponents since media coverage was limited to a vague story in the Wasilla newspaper.

Considering that only a small fraction of rape cases ever go to court far enough to get a conviction- even with the evidence- this does fall back on the shoulders of most of the victims. Palin is a bad woman.

I did get an email today from the publisher of The Frontiersman - the Wasilla newspaper - verifying that they ran only one article on the rape kit issue. I didn't need this proof to know that Palin would have known about the rape kit. I knew all along that she in some ways was guilty in knowing this was happening. Just by judging her character and her record it's no suprise to me that she knew all along what was happening in Alaska and she did nothing about it. I wouldn't be suprise to learn also if she infact was involved in using her power of authority to get Monegan fire due to not firing her bro-in-law. Palin is down right dirty politic!

Rape kits aren't that expensive and evidence gathering tests are even more inexpensive.

you yell facts people, and yet you don't post any. Rape kits do NOT cost less than $400, and up to as much as $1200. That's just the kit. The forensic exam costs are considered emergent care and include facility charges, lab charges, and forensic nursing and doctor charges. Above and beyond all that, no woman dealing with sexual assault should be confronted with having to pay for this aspect of police work. You aren't expected to pay for robbery investigations, are you?
