I am a relative of both sides. Devil Anse was my fourth great uncle on my mothers side and Randall was my fourth great uncle on my fathers side. I also lived in south Los Angeles in the 70's and 80's and called my family the original gang bangers. However, there is more to this story than some hotheads a lot of land exchanged hands during this time and the Coal Barrons have been destroying the land ever since.

hi...i am descendant of both of these families. so i can answe your question. the main reason why the feud went on was because of the love story between roseanna mccoy and jonse hatfield. but, what really set the feud on the bloody course it took was when perry cline suggested to the governor of west virginia to reopen the warrants againist the hatfield family. so you have two different reasons, but both families differ on WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

She told us about Devil Anse, when her grand mother fixed breakfast for Devil Anse and his men before they rode out to take revenge on the McCoys. Who knows - it might be a Celtic thing all around. McCoy is a Scottish name, like MacArthur is (and I'm a MacArthur on dad's side of the family).
