what you just said prooves that 10-15 years ago competitions were harder ! the tour was more closer to 4000 kms nowadays it rarely is more than 3500 and so to sum up mountain stage are easier and time trial shorter the same is for the giro !

that comparison is flawed for many reasons.

In 1997 there was 252.5km, with col du portet d'aspet, de port, d'envalira, d'ordino and arcalis to finish!So the stage was more difficult than this year and it was after 10 stages, 7 this year!!

And the wind was almost the same..

So this comparison seems to be good, no doubt!

different race +there was no test of EPO back then..as long as you kept your hematocrit in check you were basically safe (detection). in other words: doping dosages is something you have to keep in mind. they were doped to their ears back then (thus some of the monster times achieved by ullrich, pantani, riis on mountain climbs). obviously doping is still a huge problem in cycling today, but it has gone down somewhat and many of those who dope cant use the same dosages as they could back then.

90% (if not more) of the peloton was on drugs back in the 90s. drugs use is obviously still a big problem but it has gone down abit compared to the EPO-era.

Oh really? That must be why Armstrong got banned for blood doping and subsequently retired in shame, while Ullrich never got caught with anything and was recently allowed to make a successful comeback.

@tuber8440 i think you don't understand the complete story. Ullrich was (and still is) NEVER caught. They found bloodsacks with his name on it... END OF FUCKING STORY. Armstrong has been taking doping as a cure for his cancer. But of course that is never mentioned because it was a cure, but it's still doping.

Not quite true. Ullrich and Riis both failed tests before the 96 Olympics which is why they did not appear in Atlanta. This was hushed-up and not revealed to the public - see Grahame Fife's book on the Tour de France for more details. He also failed a test for recreational abuse - an Ecstacy pill according to Jan's defence but it could have been anything really. And I say all this as a fan of Jan's.
